[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Yes, but it's not a LTE SIM. The SIM in a 4s allows it to connect to other GSM networks and be called a "global phone". Apple didn't start supporting LTE until the iPhone 5.

Good catch, thanks

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

HELP PLEASE...
I bought the s6 online from BB and it came today. I activated it on the upgraded dumb phone line per instructions and it has been about 1.5 hours. I made a call and text and all works fine. I logged into Verizon and it showed the s6 on the upgraded dumb phone line correctly. I then followed your instructions to switch device on line one and choose line 3. It prompted to text me a code which I sent to my wife's phone on line 2. All seemed going well until I entered code and ok to switch, then it came back with following message "The SIM cards associated with the two devices you requested to switch services between are incompatible. We cannot complete this request online, please contact us for assistance." I then logged out.
So what should I do now?
Has Verizon closed another loophole?
Please let me know what you think is the best way to proceed!
Thanks.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have another question, as I mentioned I have 2 lines both have UDP and both are eligible for upgrade. If I don't mind losing the UDP on one line, can I use that line to upgrade (at discount price), then switch the new phone (Note 4) to the line I want to use it on?

The line / number I want to use it with is the one I want to retain the UDP.

You can take the phone to a VAR and have them switch the lines. This sometimes happens with older 4g smartphones, but it's safe to involve Verizon.

Yes that would work if you want to sacrifice an unlimited line. What current phone do you have on unlimited line that you want to keep? There are many different ways to getting the discounted price and keeping unlimited.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Even after the Verizon rep told me I would lose my data when I went into the store as he said I couldn't move a HD calling capable phone to a UDP line? Would it be safer to cut my micro sim to nano and then insert in new s6? For the s4 then go in and ask for new micro? I'm just nervous... Where I live there is no other internet but my 4g. Thanks

I have a htc Incredible (original 3g phone) on the line I want to keep unlimited on. I have a Droid X 3g phone on the line I'd sacrifice the UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello everyone, first of all id like to say im very grateful to have found this discussion. Ill get right down to business. Ive been planning to upgrade my phone for a while now (I still have an htc rezound) and was prepared with the correct upgrade procedure to keep ud (swap upgrade to another tiered smartphone line on my plan do the upgrade wait for a couple hours and make sure everything works then reactivate old phone on tiered line and insert my ud line sim card into new phone and activate on my line)
Ive been reading everywhere, including cnet (see the "how to keep your unlimited Verizon data plan" article) I also spoke to a Verizon rep at a Verizon store and he said that wont work anymore since about a year ago (but he offered another suggestion activate another line on my account with the new phone (S6) and remove the S6 from the new line and activate it on my ud line. Then a few weeks later activate an old flip phone (which I just happen to have laying around) on the new line and don't use it. That way ill keep my ud but itll cost me 20$ extra a month for the extra line.
I didn't really want to go through all that and was ready to buy the phone at full price but this discussion seems to have given me hope again.
Anyway, heres my situation I have 5 lines on my family plan all tiered data except mine. All phones are iphones a 4, a 5, a 5s, and a 6, and mine the htc rezound. My line is the only one with an upgrade available and I plan on transferring the upgrade to the iphone 5 (this is my moms line and she will be most understanding of my situation and wont mind me using her line to do this).
So just to be sure can I get the proper way to go about this, oh and I have a regular size to nano size sim cutting tool so I can use my sim for the new s6 I plan on getting.
One more thing if I get the asurion phone insurance during the checkout on the Verizon website will that effect anything and will the insurance transfer lines with the phone?
Thanks a lot

The rep was lying to you. Try calling Verizon if you don't want to go in person. If you have a VAR nearby, they tend to hassle customers less than the regular stores.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I appreciate all the help! Did it over the phone top 611. All seems to be working fine and still have unlimited data...so far so good.

The Verizon rep gave you some poor advice as to how to upgrade your phone. Just do the following:

1) Transfer your upgrade to your mom's line and order the S6. Have the phone shipped to home.
2) When the phone arrives activate it on your mom's line. Wait at least an hour and make sure the S6 works as expected.
3) Power off the S6
4) Log into Verizon online and reactivate your mom's iPhone.
5) Now activate the S6 onto your line using Verizon online.

By follow the directions above, you won't need to cut your SIM. You'll end up reprogramming a SIM to your unlimited plan.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm looking for some follow up help please. Thanks in advance! The quote feature is not working so I inserted the method I used below, instructions provided by dusoccer10 (thanks again!)...

So, I followed the below method and all worked perfectly, except neither my wife or I are happy (at all) with the iphone6...go figure. We have just a few days to complete our return, and wanted to know how to do this safely (maintaining unlimited)...

Also, I would like to replace them instead with the GS6's... We now obviously have working nano-sim's but not sure if this changes our process any and/or if they can be helpful in redoing the process. Can someone please provide guidance with the return and when/how we can reorder new devices while maintaining unlimited?

As an aside...the iphone clearly works well for some, but the switch from android to IOS8 left us feeling handicapped - features are so much more limited, not to mention how disappointing the camera was (even compared to the GS4)...perhaps our expectations were unrealistic tho.

Thanks again!!!

This is probably the best method for you:

1) Through Verizon online, order the iPhone Line 2 wants using Line 1's upgrade, picking the 2GB data plan for Line 1 and have it shipped to home;
2) After the first order is submitted, through Verizon online, order the iPhone Line 1 wants using Line 2's upgrade, picking the 2GB data plan for UDP Line 2 and have it shipped to home;
3) When the new smartphones arrive, do not turn them on, rather log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device;
4) Select Line 2 - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page";
5) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the phone ordered for Line 2 (using Line 1's upgrade in Step 1) and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the phone and follow the directions to activate Line 2's new phone on Line 2;
6) Then click activate or switch a device, select Line 1 - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page";
7) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the phone ordered for Line 1 (using Line 2's upgrade in Step 2) and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the phone and follow the directions to activate Line 1's new phone on Line 1.

Because you want two iPhone 6's, it is absolutely crucial that you keep the phones straight and do not activate them on the lines they were ordered on. I strongly recommend ordering different colors if possible.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I feel as if you guys have unnecessary steps with line 1 line 2 bs...or maybe the process has changed but what I did was I had an unlimited line with an upgrade available and all I did was order the phone through best buy have it shipped home and when it got home all I did was swap the Sim from the current phone to the new phone and everything worked fine......if you have a micro Sim and need a nano Sim buy a Sim cutter from amazon its what I did to transfer from the m7 to m8 .....no need for these 'line 1 line 2 wait an hour' stuff............

Is this swap method still working? I have heard about people having problems with both lines being "upgraded", therefore losing unlimited data on the UDP line.

This is how I have done it before, so I blindly ordered a G4 yesterday by transferring an upgrade.

It's fairly easy as long as you within your 14 day window:

1.) Reactivate your old phones
2.) Return the iPhone 6's and get your upgrade restored

Once you have the upgrades restored, you can always order a different phone.

The method you are doing is the preferred way of doing an upgrade. It will definitely still work. Additionally, since you will not have a pending activation on the account (you bypass the by activating the phone on the tiered line first), you can always get Verizon or a VAR to help if you get stuck.

Thank you! I am within the 14 days. A couple follow up questions if you don't mind.

Should I return the nano SIM's that came with the iphones along with them? I ask this in case these SIM's could prove useful at the time I try to re-order new phones (since my GS4 sims are not usable and I'd prefer not to cut them down). Don't want to overcomplicate things so I'm fine if I send them back with the phones is best.
And, do I need to do anything to get the upgrades restored or does this happen automatically once the returns are processed? I'm just trying to avoid making contact with Verizon CS and drawing any attention to the order I placed...

Thanks!!!

Feel free to keep the SIMs. You might need to contact Verizon if the upgrades are not automatically restored.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm helping my sister do her upgrade and wanted to get help to make sure I'm doing this correctly:

Line 1: Basic Line no data (upgrade available)
Line 2 (sister's): UDP (no upgrade) iPhone 4

1. Order iPhone 6 upgrade through Basic Line 1 and have it mailed, remove SIM that comes with it and destroy it
2. I'm ordering a blank nano SIM for my Nexus 6, when it arrives I will activate my phone using the blank SIM on my sister's UDP line
3. Reactivate my Nexus 6 back with my UDP SIM
4. Take SIM that I activated under my sister's UDP and put it into new iPhone 6 and power on.

That should do it right?

The only concerns I have are these:

1. Will the basic phone line 1 that we order the upgrade through have a "pending activation" notification just sitting on the line?
2. Will the blank SIM that I ordered for my Nexus 6 to activate my sister's line on fit and work for an iPhone 6? I think they both use nano-SIM, but wasn't sure if I activated it on my Nexus 6 first, then put it in the iPhone 6 if there would be a problem.
3. Will using the method of activating a blank SIM on my phone with her line, then putting that SIM in the iPhone 6 work to activate on her line and keep her UDP?

If anyone has any answers to these or a better method please let me know, I'd really appreciate it.
