[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Real quick, simple question, I'm sure it's been answered 100 times:

My line is the only line with UDP, and I have an upgrade available.
I want the G4.

Do I simply...
Transfer the upgrade to my brother's line, order the G4 with his upgrade and then.... then what... I don't know how to activate it on my line.

And can I do it through Verizon online?

What phone do you have and what phone does your brother have?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just wanted to give an update on the best buy method. I followed the instructions here very carefully and all is well. New G4 with unlimited data!

Thanks to all who are patient in answering our questions!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, I have been reading through for about and hour. I think I am confident in there are 3 ways to do this. One is using tiered data lines to order
/transfer upgrades to and activate the phones on your UDP. The second one is having a dumbline to upgrade to and when ordering the phone ship to home, so not involve stores or reps. Do not turn on or activate with shipped SIM, instead use the one from the desired UDP. And the third is to buy from Best Buy using the UDP line, ignore warnings, select keep existing plan and do the same with SIM as previous step.

Is this decent summary?

If I am correct on those then I do need a few clarifications.

With the new rules placed in August... Doing it the second method involving a dumb line, will this cause a tiered data plan to be initiate? Also, do I need to reactivate a dumb phone back in the line? If so must it be different than the previous one?

Next questions involve method three, using best buy and upgrading UDP. I know this is riskier, but if I see my line switch can't I just return the device in the 14 day window and raise Heck about the line changing which is why I returned it, play the I did t know card. Also with this method has anyone done it recently, and does it extend my contract on that line? If so I would think this is preferable as it would obligate them to fulfil my 2 years or give me my phone and exempt ETF when they decide to remove all of us UDP users.

Thank you for comments and sorry if my questions are repetitive.

Situation I'm in is line 1-2 UDP smartphones upgrade way past eligible lol

Line 3-4 basic all the way, not eligible for 1 year, no data. They were used in past as our upgrade lines. But have read they may u take tiered data for 2 years when you buy any smart phone so that won't work anymore.

Any advice or clarification is appreciated. I am leaning towards best buy if it extends contract so I can drop my two other lines. The. Jump Verizon ship once the other carries catch up in the next 3-5 years. You know they are :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am grateful for the help that I have received here. I was able to use my dumb phone second line to upgrade to an iPhone for my daughter. She uses the phone on a completely separate account. I left the dumb phone on my second/family share line.

Usually in the summer I activate a smart phone on the share line for about a month for my daughter to use. My question is will I be able to cancel the data plan, as I usually do after the one month period, after having used the line for her upgrade. I would not be activating the upgraded phone on the line. I would be activating an S4. After a month the dumb phone would go back on the line and hopefully the line would go back to the cheaper service. I do not want to get stuck on the smart phone rates.

For the most part, you have the basics down. For the most part, choosing a method is based on what phones you currently have, what phones you want, and the type of lines you have on your account. Since you have two unlimited lines with upgrades available and two basic lines without upgrades, you could go a couple of different ways. Off the top of my head, you could do the true Best Buy Method, cross-upgrading on the unlimited lines, or transferring the upgrades to the basics. It's really a matter of comfort level.

As for your questions:

1.) With the changes last August, the upgrades on the basic lines are different than previously. You do not actually activate the smartphone on the basic line anymore. This will get you stuck with a data plan. Instead, you "upgrade" the basic line and directly activate the new smartphone on the unlimited line. This bypasses the data plan activation and keeps the basic phone price on the account.

2.) Returns are a trickier thing when using loopholes. I strongly recommend that you be ok with the phone you order. With that said, if you need to make a return, the big thing is to get your upgrade reinstated. This will allow you to re-use the upgrade again for a new smartphone. Whatever you do, just don't do an exchange!

3.) If you do one of these methods, you are looking at a new two year contract on the line that the upgrade originated from. In other words, your unlimited lines will be extended another 2 years.

What phones do you currently have on your unlimited lines and what new phones do you want? This will ultimately decide the easiest method for you.

I'm not sure if anyone knows the answer to that question. There have been instances in the SlickDeals thread where people have gotten stuck with a data plan after using a basic line's upgrade because they messed with the line. It's generally recommended that you do not touch your basic line and leave it alone except to upgrade.

Most likely, you are on your own if you decide to try to do this. In theory, it should work fine as long as the pending activation has fallen off, but there is no guarantee.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Got my s6 phone best buy.
Everything is working and not the phone keeps rebooting randomly. How can I try to exchange phones without losing unlimited? Will best buy just give me a new one?

Try a factory reset first to see if it clears up the issue. If not, you cannot get an exchange. You need to return the phone and get your upgrade restored. Then, you can redo the process again.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here's our situation:

L1 UDP iPhone 4 had upgrade
L2 UDP iPhone 5 had upgrade
L3 TDP iPhone 5c no upgrade
L4 TDP iPhone 5c no upgrade

I would like to upgrade L1 and L2 to iPhone 6 and keep their UDP. Please advice. Been reading pages and got quite confused and worried... Thank you.

Transfer upgrade 1 to 3. Activate on 3. Swap device online to Line 1. Reactivate old line 3 sim in the 5c.

Transfer 2 to 4. Activate the phone on 4. Swap the sim cards.

I'd like to use the old SIM method. My question is, can I, very carefully in a way that ensures it will never be used, keep the new SIM card in case something goes wrong and I need to return the phone, or does its mere existence cause a problem?

Also, during the verizon cart checkout, my monthly data charge on UDP line disappears, and monthly line access becomes $9.99. My reading is that this doesn't matter because I won't be activating the new plan?

A couple of things:

1.) Which method are you doing? If you are planning on upgrading your unlimited line through Verizon and then using your old SIM, this will not work. The only time someone can use Verizon is if you are upgrading a different line than the ultimate home of the new phone.

2.) If you need to make a return, just return the phone without a SIM. It's perfectly fine to do that. I wouldn't keep the new SIM.

I'm using the upgrade from, and ordering it ostensibly for, a dumbline on same account (Line 1). When it arrives I will not turn it on, destroy new SIM, take the SIM out of Iphone 5c (sorry) attached to UDP (Line 2) and put it in the new phone (Iphone 6+), then turn it on, then wait for the pending activation to disappear? This works and it doesn't matter that unlimited data disappears during order stage?

Gotcha. Your plan will work fine and the 6+ can be ordered from Verizon since you are using a basic line's upgrade. If you need to return it for any reason, just put your SIM in the 5c before taking the 6+ back. Make sure to get your upgrade restored and redo the process if the 6+ doesn't work out for any reason.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks in advance for the answer...

Line 1 - S4 UDP upgrade available
Line 2 - dumb phone upgrade available
Line 3 - HTC One TDP upgrade available

I'd like to upgrade Line 1 (S4) with an S6 and keep the UDP. Would it be 'easier' to use the upgrade on Line 2 to keep unlimited data on Line 1? And if so what's the process as I believe it has changed since I have done this in the past. Or is it easier to use the upgrade available on Line 1 and transfer the unlimited line to the new phone?

TIA

1.) Use the upgrade on Line 3 to get the S6. This can be done either online or in-store since you are using a tiered line upgrade
2.) Activate the S6 on the tiered line for at least an hour
3.) Log into Verizon online and reactivate the HTC One on the tiered line
4.) Now activate the S6 on Line 1

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'll use my mom's line, she has the s3 mini

How many lines are on your account and what type of phones are on them? Getting a G4 is fairly easy, it's just a matter of what method works best.

5 Lines on our business account, all smartphones but none have UDP except mine. I'm looking to upgrade to G4 and keep my UDP, that's all.

Thanks. Is there any chance I could use the dumb phone upgrade instead? Reason being the HTC one is not available for upgrade like I originally thought. I did call verizon today and they are sending me a nano sim card if that matters.
