[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What is the plan change?

I was trying to change the amount of minutes on the plan from 1400 minutes to 700
Still haven't activated the new phone just in case.
Also would changing the minutes have any effect on the unlimited data plan at all?

Thanks!

Edit - Sorry for the constant questions, but is there a recommended time period we should wait between ordering and activating new phones from Bestbuy for each individual upgradable UDP line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does anyone know if these options can be done if purchasing from Motomaker.com? I assume it's the same as ordering from Verizonwireless.com or Bestbuy.com. Put phone in cart, select plan change, ship to home, do not turn on, swap sims, then turn on to activate on line with unlimited.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks startertan. The main plan is not being closed. I am talking only about my line. I saw online (ebay) that some people actually sell their unlimited, is that even possible?

Yes, it is possible. You are asking about an Assumption of Liability where a different person takes over the account. It's all or nothing, so you can't "sell" just one line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all!

I Currently have the following setup through Verizon:

Line 1: HTC M8 - UDP - No Upgrade
Line 2: iPhone 5S - UDP - No Upgrade
Line 3: Basic, no data - Upgrade Available

I would like to Upgrade my Line 1 to a S6 Edge Plus when it comes out. Would the Bestbuy method work best by ordering it on my dumb line, then simply switching sims when the new phone arrives? I have heard that even if you activate the dumb phone back on the 3rd line it will trigger the TDP.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

Would the BB method work best?

You have the right idea. Basically, you do:

1.) Use the upgrade on Line 3 to order the new smartphone. Order it from either Best Buy or Verizon online. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When it arrives, do not try to charge or turn on the new smartphone.
3.) Remove the SIM card that comes with the new phone and destroy it
4.) Power off the HTC m8 and remove its SIM card
5.) Put the SIM card from the HTC m8 in the S6 edge+
6.) Turn on the S6 edge+ and wait a few minutes for it to activate

That's all you need to do and these steps will bypass the tiered data plan being activated on the basic line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thank you for the quick response! Would another option be to
1. transfer the upgrade from line 1 to line 3
2. order the g4 from verizon using line 3
3. activate the phone on line 3 for a hour and then reactivate line 3s s4 and then activate the g4 on line one via verizons online service?

That works too. I only gave you those directions because you could get the new phone today rather than wait for shipping.

You should be able to safely drop the call minutes to 700 before activating the new smartphone.

As for time period, you can order a new one immediately; though, I typically recommend waiting until the first one ships before moving to the next line.

It depends. If you wanted to buy a 2014 Moto X on contract (i.e. for $50), you cannot use Motomaker.com. Motorola automatically pushes through the plan change when the phone is shipped. They do not wait for activation like Best Buy does.

If you wanted to buy the 2014 Moto X ($299) or Moto X Pure Edition ($399), this would be considered a full price purchase and not affect your unlimited data.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

VAR worked like a charm.

Guys, thanks for all the support for nothing more than a "thank you".

Cheers.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for the all the help dusoccer10 always appreciated!

I was able to go ahead and upgrade 1 line to an s6 with UDP through BestBuy method
But when I go ahead to upgrade the other 2 lines with UDP, it gives me an error saying I'm not eligible to upgrade yet?
On the date it clearly says 7/07/2014
Did I do something wrong with the first UDP line I upgraded? The new S6 seems to work seamlessly otherwise

I'm trying to upgrade to swap the new phone onto a line with UDP using BestBuy.com I'm not getting the option to have it shipped to me. Says only available for store pickup, same with Apple .com too. Anyone else seeing this?

BestBuy.com restricts their shipping based on inventory. This is likely to change if you can wait a week or two. BB seems to also change pricing weekly. I see updates usually on Fridays and often also on Tuesdays.

Do you get a similar message from Verizon or do they allow you to upgrade?

On Verizon it gives me the option to upgrade the phone but it gives me this message first
I switched my minutes from 1400 to 700 right before I activated the first s6 I ordered through Bestbuy
Does anyone know how long changes in the price plan stays pending? Pretty sure it's why Bestbuys been giving me an error
It gives me the option to cancel the pending order to upgrade but I didn't want to risk changing the plan after I switched all 3 lines in case when they notice that they all have new phones and kept the UDP

That's exactly why Best Buy is giving you an error. My guess is that you'll have to wait until the new billing cycle.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I've spent the last 2 hours on line getting more confused. Can someone please help me, please?

-Motorola Droid - Unlimited Data (I want to upgrade to a new phone)
-Galaxy 4 - 2 Gig with free upgrade

I just received a G3 from Best Buy online at home that I received from my Galaxy 4 with free upgrade. I want to upgrade my G3 to my Motorola without losing the unlimited. I did not turn on the G3 yet but I opened the back and the SIM card is there but will not come out. I read that I just need to swap the SIM from the Droid to the new G3 and I will not lose the unlimited on the Droid. Is this correct or do I have to activate my G3 to the Galaxy first and swap out the SIM from the Droid to the G3? What is the proper process to not lose the Droid Unlimited? And how do I get my SIM card out of the G3?

update...I got the SIM card out.

Thats what I figured thanks for the help dusoccer10
If I were to cancel the pending change and went ahead with upgrading my other two lines, would it be safe to make the changes in the plan right after all phones were activated? Or would I have to give it a few months?

You'll probably need to wait a few months so that the pending activations fall off. Typically, they do not allow plan changes and that could be what is holding everything up.

Activate the G3 on the S4 Line. This will remove the pending activation on that device. Wait an hour and then power off the G3. Take the SIM out of the G3 and put it back in the S4. Power on the S4 and wait a few minutes for it to activate. After that, take the G3 to a VAR and have them activate it on the unlimited data line.
