[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Cruzmike,

Did you do the Best Buy Method? If so, I saw nothing that showed me to "Keep Existing Plan" during checkout just a warning on the first page that said I would go to a 2gb plan. Any thoughts from you or the other experts?

Mike :)

[Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I called Verizon and they told me that they will still have the 2 year subsidized phones.

If you are locked into a two year contract now you're are fine, but it will not be available after the 13th for new upgrades.

That's the issue, the email confirmation does not list a phone number, however, I know for a fact when I started the process that it had the phone number of the tiered data line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

According to everything I've read the options for us with UDP will be buy full retail

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I wonder if speculation about future plans is helpful in this forum topic?

Maybe waiting until we have definite answers, or starting a separate topic would be more helpful?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Not based on what I read in the official Verizon press release. :( I sure hope I'm wrong.

I talked to them in the morning and that's what they told me after I said if they will stop with 2 year contracts subsidized phones after Aug 13th

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I completely missed the upgrading of the basic to a tiered line. In this scenario, it's even easier than before assuming you want a Note 4 or G4:

1.) Transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 at either Best Buy or Verizon online. Order the smartphone, select the amount of tiered data, and have it shipped to home
2.) When the phone arrives, just activate it as normal. This will convert Line 2 to a new tiered data line and will not affect the unlimited data plan on Line 1.
3.) Wait an hour to make sure the new phone works as expected. Test data, calls, and texts.
4.) Power off the new smartphone and the G3.
5.) Swap the SIM cards between the two smartphones and then power them both on. This will activate the G3 on Line 2 and the Note 4/G4 on Line 1

If you decide to get a Note 5 or a current year Samsung, those phones are now using nano-SIMs. In this scenario, you'll still do steps 1-3. After that, you'll take both phones to a VAR and have them switch the lines.

dusoccer10. Thanks again for the reply. Could i head in to a verizon store to do this too transfering the upgrade before going in? Seems like a note 5 is out if i want to keep the unlimited data with the news out today about the changes.

Anyone also know if they drop the note 4 pricing in the next 14 days can one get the difference back if i were to buy the note 4 tonight lets say?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

dusoccer,

I just purchased an LG G4 through the Best Buy system and had it sent to my house. The strange thing was that it said that I would be changed to the 2 gb plan but recall seeing that I should ignore that blue box. Any thoughts?

You won't be changed unless you activate the sim that ships with the phone on the line that it was ordered on. What method are you trying to do?

What phone did you order? What phone is on the tiered line? What phone is on the unlimited line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just spoke with a rep over the phone, at first she said she wasn't aware of it, but put me on hold to check a little further. When she got back on the phone she said it was true that 2 year contracts would no longer be a option after the 13th

You can only do this in store if the basic line has an upgrade. If you are transferring an upgrade, you must order online.

Now, it is possible to pick up in store, but you'll need to watch the rep like a hawk.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

All,

Let's stay focused on what works for the time being. It's tough to say exactly how this will play out on the 13th. There might be new loopholes that emerge. Maybe Verizon goes back to the old way were everyone could use the installment plan regardless of data plan. It would cost us more, but at least we would keep unlimited.

Verizon is moving to a whole new structure. It will be interesting to see how everything plays out. If Verizon closes all loopholes, I hope everyone here is a Motorola fan or is praying to whoever that the next Nexus works on Verizon with 4 and 5 pricing.

It's easy to say let's focus on what works now but it's also important to know that things are changing on the 13th and the loop hole in may be closed so they can pull the trigger before the 13th if they have been thinking about it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Word of advice, since I just went yesterday. If you go into a Verizon store you WILL lose your unlimited data if you transfer from a UDP line. I went to a couple Verizon stores and they told me the same thing. I understand that they are trained to get you away from unlimited data, but the rep I got even told me to do it online based on his experience with transferring with customers in store.

I'm in full agreement with you. My post was more to keep this thread about using loopholes with an unlimited plan, rather than it get bogged down with what different reps are saying. It's in true Verizon fashion that people are hearing different things from different people.

All transfer methods require online ordering. The only two times someone could upgrade in store is if: (1) the upgrade is already on a tiered line or (2) the upgrade is on a basic line that is being used to create a new tiered line.

Wife wants an iPhone 6 Plus on Line 1, best action to take? My first thought would be to use the Early upgrade from Line 4, but dont want to get screwed when it arrives with a 2 year Data plan attached to it. I have walked all the way through Line 4's upgrade, it does allow for a new 2 Year contract at contract pricing, so its definitely not only Edge pricing.
You can bypass the 2 year data plan on Line 4 by doing the following:

1.) Use the upgrade on Line 4 and order the iPhone 6+ through Verizon. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the phone arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it.
3.) Log into Verizon online
4.) Select "activate or switch device"
5.) Choose your wife's line
6.) Select phone that has never been on the account before
7.) Enter the IMEI and SIM numbers of the iPhone 6+ (select pre-existing SIM if necessary).
8.) Follow the rest of the directions to activate the iPhone 6+ on your wife's line

Ok so I am finally ready to do this upgrade due to the recent news regarding 2 year contracts going away.

I no longer have the option to early upgrade Line 4, so we will need to go through Bestbuy. I am trying to transfer the upgrade via their website, but I'm seeing no option to do this. Below is a screenshot of Line 3 (this line is NOT eligible for upgrade).

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry for the long lost.So this is what I was told to do to keep my UDP so I can get the S6.

Line 1: iPhone 5- UDP- Yes
Line 2: S6 Edge-TDP- Aug 24th upgrade date

1.) Go to Verizon and upgrade Line 2 to a S6.
2.) Drive home and wait at least an hour
3.) Power off the S6 and the iPhone
4.) Take the SIM out of the S6 and put it in the S6 edge. Turn on the S6 edge and give it a couple of minutes to activate.
5.) Once the S6 edge is active, take out the SIM from the iPhone 5 and put it in the S6. Turn on the S6 and wait a couple of minutes for it to activate.

Now that there will be no contracts and I'll have to buy the phone full price by I'm monthly payments. Won't I still be able to do the steps above? The only difference is that I'm not getting the S6 at a discount price but paying it monthly instead. Or because since I'm paying it monthy the phone is only attached to the line and can't switch it to a different line anymore till fully paid?

Another thing. How does the best buy method work? Do I
1. On best buy Transfer line 1(UDP) upgrade to line 2(TDP)
2. Oder S6.
3. Destroy the sim the came with s6 and put the one I have on my iPhone 5(line 1).

Is that how it would work? Again Sorry for this long post.
