[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So here is my scenario, I have 4 lines on a family plan, with 1 upgrade available on a basic phone and 1 with unlimited data, 2 with tiered data. Is there a way I can transfer the upgrade on the basic phone line to one of the tiered data plan and not be charged a $30 monthly data plan on the basic phone line?

Line 1: UDP
Line 2: TDP
Line 3: TDP
Line 4: Basic phone with upgrade (looking to get a new smartphone for line 2 or 3 without having to pay $30 month for 2 years).

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

^ To each their own. Like I said, coverage in my area is great, and T-Mobile has been picking things up.
Hence the "I"..... I'll keep my unlimited data, great coverage, and $20 per line data discount. There will always be a phone I can live with.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Good morning.
Just last Thursday, I upgraded using my 3rd line's upgrade. I went into Best Buy, got my Note 5, then walked into Verizon, and had them active the iPhone 5c, from line 3.
After an hour, I switched Sim cards. Everything has been working great.

Now I'd like to do the same for line 2.
Can I do the SAME procedure as above, including going into Verizon to activate line 3's phone to line 2, even though it's only been a few days?
I'm planning on ordering online, transferring Line 2's upgrade to line 3 & picking up the phone at Best Buy in store.

Line 1: UDP Note 5, upgrade available

Line 2: UDP - SOLD iPhone 6 Plus (currently NO phone on the line, just kept Sim card) Upgrade available
Wants: Edge Plus

Line 3: TDP iPhone 5c, NO Upgrade available (used upgrade for line 1)

Thank you!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Great info on here guys. I'm due for an upgrade on 9/15. I've read the past 15 pages and for the most part I understand how this works but I'm not 100% sure and don't want to mess up.

Line 1: UDP - S4 - no upgrade available (want to upgrade phone on this line)
Line 2: TDP - iPhone 5 - upgrade available

Since the upgrade is available on the TDP line I obviously don't need to transfer it. My concern is when I order my new G4 on line 2 should I just put in my line 1 sim and turn it on or should I activate it on line 2 and then switch back to the iphone 5?

It seems in the posts the answer depends on where you buy the phone from but it just wasn't clear. From what I see when people buy from verizon they would activate the new g4 on line 2 then deactivate and put the iphone 5 back on. When people buy from Best Buy they just switch the sims before turning it on.

Best Buy has the g4 with leather for $100 so I'd like to buy it from them. Please let me know if it matters what method to use. Any additional details are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You can do either, but the easiest way to order online and just put your line 1 SIM in the new phone and turn the phone on. Don't start it up before switching SIMs or it will activate on line two and you will then have to switch the iPhone5 back on it. Not a big deal, but unnecessary extra steps.

The only side effect of doing it with the swap SIM is that you will have an pending activation on line 2, but it shouldn't effect anything and will fall off eventually.

You can buy it in store from BestBuy as well, but in store they will activate it on the line 2 and you will have to go online with Verizon and swap phones after you leave.

I went and tried doing it like I thought would work,
Ordered online @ Best Buy, transferred upgrade to line 3, but once @ Best Buy to pick up the phone, it wouldn't go through. So they called Verizon.
I went online and read, "Do not let them call Verizon"
So I said, "ABORT! ABORT!"
I cancelled the transaction, went home and ordered the phone using the upgrade.
I will just destroy included Sim and use the old Sim, when phone arrives.
Am I doing this right?

Scary times yesterday.

Thanks.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey all, been a lurker for awhile, but I have a bit of dilemma right now.

I'm on a plan with my parents right now that is the 700 nation wide plan.

L1 (mine) & L2: unlimited data (both have upgrades available)
L3: 2GB data.

They want to add a fourth line and break away to one of the new Verizon plans. The Verizon reps told us that they can break away and have their own plan, I can stay on the 700 plan, but reduce my minutes, and keep unlimited if I upgrade to a new phone at full price since I'm not switching plans, but just lowering my minutes.

I'm not sure I can trust the Verizon reps, but does this sound right? Could I upgrade my phone, L1, with the forever method (to get it cheaper) with L3 before they break away to new plan? I'm eyeing the Nexus 2015.

Thanks guys!

Edit: I'm looking to upgrade as soon as the new Nexus comes out, or something else, as my LG G2 is pretty unusable. 1/2 the touch screen doesn't even work anymore =/

Thanks for the quick response. I have one further question. Let's say I go the route where I activate the new G4 on line 2, then deactivate it and switch it back to the Iphone. Now I just have the g4 not connected to any line. Should I just pop my s4 sim into the g4 or should I log into my Verizon account and activate the g4 on line 1 that way? Does it make a difference?

Yes, order online, ship to home, before powering up new device insert "old" SIM.
Once new device powers up with old SIM attempt to make a phone call. If the call goes through you are all done.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I'll be switching from my Galaxy S4 to the Iphone 6s. I'll be going through Verizon Online using my upgrade from my basic line and putting the Iphone on my unlimited line. How should i go about getting a sim card for the Iphone from my unlimited line? I believe they are different sizes. Would going to a VAR and having them activate the Iphone on my unlimited line be the correct way to go about it? Thanks

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey Everyone,

Just giving an update on my experience using the Best Buy method. I did just as instructed, ordered the phone through Best buy online, had it shipped to my home and destroyed the Sim card that came with the phone. I ordered a sim card cutter from amazon, cut my old S3 sim card to a nano and threw it in the Droid Turbo. Everything has worked flawlessly for the past few weeks and I havent had a single problem! Love that this method worked and I was finally able to upgrade after years of being too afraid to attempt it. I was hesitant at first because I ordered the phone two days before the big changes with Verizon but alas I haven't had a problem.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey I've read through the thread a bit but haven't found my specific fact pattern so wanted to ask you guys before I make a move.

Line 1 (me): Unlimited Data iPhone 5 - Upgrade Available
Line 2 (mom): Unlimited Data iPhone 5s - Upgrade Available
Line 3 (dad): No Data, non-smart phone - No Upgrade Available
Line 4 (sister): Tiered Data iPhone 6 - No Upgrade Available

Should I transfer my (line 1) upgrade to my dad's non-smartphone line and order the new phone from Verizon I want (iPhone 6s) on his line? From what I've read, it's unclear to me whether transferring my upgrade to my dad's line will eliminate my unlimited data plan.
When the new phone comes, do I just put the SIM card from my iPhone 5 in it before turning it on?

The last time I upgraded (Sept 2012), I somehow used the upgrade on my mom's line and transferred the new phone over to my line before turning it on (and she was able to keep her unlimited data somehow). Another option I have is to transfer the Line 2 upgrade to my dad's non-smartphone line, so if a line is to lose unlimited data, that is the one (my mom barely uses data).

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Im new to this forms. So i've been reading past 20 pages of this thread and i'm little confused. So if this has been asked before i do apologize in advance. Here is my scenario:

Line 1 - Nexus 6 (mine) - UDP - No upgrade available
Line 2 - Iphone 6(wife) - TDP - 2gb Loyalty plan - No upgrade available
Line 3 - Basic Phone(In laws) - Up grade available
Line 4 - Basic Phone (mom's phone) - No upgrade avaliable

I would like to use Line 3's upgrade and transfer it Line 2 and get Iphone 6S Plus without getting stuck with data plan for Line 3 for 2 years. How would i go about doing this?

Thank you for any help.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello, I'm new to the forums and had a quick question about upgrading to the iPhone 6s. I currently have a iPhone 4s that's about done, I am on a family share plan with 2 phones ready for upgrades.

Line 1(me): UDP iPhone 4s - upgrade available
Line 2(mom): TDP Spectrum 2 - upgrade available
Line 3(sister): UDP Galaxy S3 - no upgrade
Line 4(step dad): Basic Phone - no upgrade

I was reading that I can't cut down my 4s sim card and put it into the new 6s because it's a 3G card and not LTE. What would be my best course of action to getting a subsidized phone while keeping my UDP?

Thanks for the help.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was ready to cut the old sim card into nano, but i noticed the gold plated chip are different sizes.

I don't know if you've moved on yet, but you can cut the SIM card to size, even if it trims the gold plated chip. Just cut it off. I don't know if some carriers' SIM cards a different, but I believe that every SIM card I've cut to nano size has included trimming the gold contact plate.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I would like to upgrade the Note 2 to the S6 Edge Plus.

My current situation:

L1 Note2 UDP upgrade no
L2 S6 UDP upgrade yes
L3 HTC One 9 UDP upgrade yes
L4 Basic Phone upgrade no
L5 Basic Phone upgrade yes

I have already upgraded the L2 and L3 using the following method.

"dusoccer10

1.) Order the S6 using either Line 1/3/4's upgrade from either Best Buy or Verizon. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the new phone arrives do not turn it on or plug it in.
3.) Log into Verizon's website
4.) Select "activate or switch device"
5.) Select Line 2
6.) Select "phone that has never been on the account before"
7.) Select "use pre-existing SIM"
8.) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers that came with the new phone. Usually, there is a sticker on the box that contains them.
9.) Follow the rest of the directions to activate the phone"

Can I upgade the Note 2 by using the upgrade from either lines 2,3 or 5 with this same method. I am not sure if anything has changed since August 13th.

Thanks again for any help.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Question on upgrading. I have 3 lines on the family plan 1400 minutes and unlimited texts. 2 of the lines are unlimited data, and one is a basic phone. The basic phone has an upgrade, and one of the unlimited lines has upgrade in December. As of now, I want to use the upgrade on the basic phone and transfer to an unlimited lines, however, when I try to do it on the Verizon website, I'm a little skeptical with the alert that pops up. I have attached the notification and was just very worried since I have done this procedure with my past phones and have never gotten this alert. I just want to make sure it is okay to proceed, and if I should do anything afterwards.

Like I've done before, I was going to buy iPhone 6S on the basic phone, convert to the 2GB $30 plan, once I get the iPhone 6S, take out the nano SIM and destroy it, do not activate on the basic phone, and then just put in SIM from iPhone 5 on the unlimited plan. After a few weeks, the 2gb plan on the basic phone will fade off, and it will be okay?

Also, when the unlimited line is eligible for upgrade, can I just transfer the upgrade from that line to the basic line (on the verizon website) and then just proceed as normal?
Thanks.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Have BEST BUY phones ever come without a Sim card??

So the new 6 Edge Plus just came in. I put in the old Sim card, but as I pulled out the phone's Sim card holder, I popped it out. The Sim card is nowhere to be seen!
I'm not certain there was one in there. The Sim card holder just popped out and landed on the floor.
I'm @ my work desk, and moved things around, nothing.
But I'm freaking out someone might find it and attempt to use it.

So, any possibility it actually didn't come with a SIM Card??

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi Guys,

L1 - Unlimited Data, Upgrade Available, Note 2
L2 - Tiered Data, Upgrade Available, S3

I ordered a Note 5 online from Verizon using L2 Upgrade, it just arrived. I want to use it on L1 and Note 2 on L2

Do I just take out the Note 5 sim out (without turning Note 5 on, out of the box) and put L1 sim to the device ( after cutting it to nano size) and take out S3 sim and put it on Note 2 on L2?

OR

Do I activate the Note 5 with the sim it came with? Then after an hour put the L1 sim into it and put the new L2 sim to Note 2?

OR

Can I just activate the new phone with the new sim on L1 online? and just move L2 sim to Note2? So I dont have to cut nano sim or use adapters?
Please let me know.

Thanks!!!

I haven't heard of a new phone shipping without a new SIM.

Thus suggests the phone may have been returned, restocked, and then reshipped to you
