[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Nah, these loopholes should still be working just fine. Unlimited data will be more expensive, but these loopholes will allow people to buy devices subsidized if they still want to.

I have to wonder if two years from now will we be able to use the BBM to renew the contract and keep the reduced rate for another two years? One could only hope...

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It sounds like you did not wait long enough with the Turbo on your sister's line if it is asking about the new device. I am assuming that it is showing the Turbo 2 as the new device on your sister's line.
Because of this, your only option right now is to cut your old SIM. You cannot contact Verizon right now since the pending activation never was cleared.

Dusoccer! Thanks for replying, but I got inpatient and started up a Chat Support with VZW and got into with a "Ruby Anna". She helped me activate the phone just now! And it worked! Testing further now. Brb!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

A lot of people are very pleased about this. I don't see why. I'd rather pay for it with my VISA card or BB card to get the points then just pay it off to avoid finance charges. If VZW wants to impress me they need to allow some sort of reduce price purchase like this thread proposes without needing to go through a second party. Rant over now back to our regularly scheduled program.

I assume after 11/15 this BB method will be gone for good?

And I quote:

Important message regarding your bill.

Starting on November 15, 2015, we are increasing the price of each
unlimited data feature by $20/mo. If any of your lines with an unlimited
data feature are currently on a two-year contract, the increase will not begin until you complete your contract term or enter into a new one.

You can see this yourself by signing on to vzw.com if you are a UDP customer...it's a modal window ("pop up" window) that comes up after you sign in to your vzw account.

So yes, after two years beginning on November 15th, we will have to play a different game to keep our unlimited at $30 a line. This is Verizon...they are well aware of this loophole and are happy to get guaranteed money for 2 years....they got all of the suckers they need/want on tiered plans. The rest of us will continue to jump through hoops to keep unlimited data at $30. I may even keep my Jetpack line at $50....I am having difficulty upgrading that line, even with a phone with the same size SIM.

What's the difficulty with upgrading the Jet Pack line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I got the option through best buy mobile to buy a phone through device payment plan through VZW... No where in the order process bestbuy asks me to change or tweak my plan. Im asking because Verizon website forces you to switch from UDP to tiered.

Whats that all about????

Is this an UPD that you updated, did you transfer it to a dummy line? How much did you have to pay to Best Buy for the option of payments through Verizon?
Why does Best Buy say Verizon Device Payment not available online through their website?
Here's my situation:
Line 1: UDP eligible for upgrade 10/25
Line 2: Dummy phone

Options:
1) Best Buy: if I buy an LG G4 ($199 2 year option) or a V10 ($249) with a two year contract, I get a 24" LG TV.

Question 1: can I transfer my upgrade to line 2, ship to my home and do the Verizon payment (throw away the shipped SIM and install my current SIM on my new phone). Or do I have to choose the 2 year option and pay the subsidized?

2) Buy directly from Verizon, transfer my upgrade to Line 2 and pay the $399 for the V10... Or get the LG G4 and use the SAVELGG4 code for $100 off for a total
($99).

Q2: Would the Best Buy method still work when buying directly from Verizon themselves? Same thing just ship home throw away the installed SIM insert my UDP SIM and we're good?

Question 3: Does anyone think that the V10 will be on Cyber Monday? The thing is I might not have the option to wait with the November 15th increase?

Option 3: If I were to use my upgrade to buy an iPhone and then flip it to buy a V10 or G4 off ebay or full price? Which iPhone do I buy and is that possible?

In my case, I went with iPhones that I could afford to buy, which were16GB iPhone 6Ses. I even had to Google which color I should get (the most popular color was Grey.) I factored in paypal costs and the Swappa fee, plus what the current pricing scheme on Swappa was versus the total price of buying an iPhone brand new from the Apple store. Came up with a reasonable price and I am semi-open to negotiation.

The holidays are coming...people are gonna want to get the latest iPhone...even at 16GB, I imagine that might not matter to some folks. I think the margins are better if you spring for a 64GB, but not by much, especially if you are going to wait for some iPhone person to pull the trigger.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does this mean if I 'upgrade' and sign a new two-year contract before nov 15, i'll be locked into paying $30 a line still for 2 years? My upgrade just became available for both my UDP lines and i'm debating upgrading now or after nov 15.

Yes that's correct!

That's exactly what that means...BUT you must make sure that the SIM that come from your upgraded phone are removed from that phone prior to turning that phone on. Otherwise, you will have inadvertantly activated your new plan and lose your UDP on that line. I have followed dusoccer10's instructions and I have a new contract on two of my UDP lines without losing UDP as well as stuck with $30 a line for two years. After that, Verizon will jack me to $50...

Here's hoping the other carriers will have stepped their game up so that maybe Verizon will retain me...but we'll see...lmao.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It just won't let me upgrade the Jetpack the same way I could upgrade a phone...even with a SIM switch.

Is a true data only line or is it supposed to be a smartphone line and you removed the SIM to put in a jet pack?

You have to use the two year contract and not device payment plan! The device payment plan does not actually put you under contract, so you'll be hit with the extra $20 charge on November 15th along with the monthly phone payments.

The Best Buy Method does not work through Verizon directly.

Your best bet is one of the following:

1.) Transfer your upgrade from unlimited to the basic line and order either the G4 or V10 through Verizon. When the phone arrives, destroy the SIM that ships with it and use your old SIM to activate the phone directly on the unlimited line. Your basic line will not get hit with a data charge by doing this route.

2.) Do the Best Buy method and order an iPhone to sell. The cheapest 6s model is $200 and you should be able to get around $650 or so. If you go this route, make sure to destroy the SIM that ships with the iPhone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

@dusoccer10..Long time reader of this thread. I'm currently on a Nationwide Talk Share 700 min + 250 texts($5/m) plan with my wife. My line(primary) is UDP m2m upgrade available, and my wife's line is a TDP(2gb) plan. One year ago, wanting to keep my UDP, I used her upgrade to purchase the Droid Turbo from BB for myself for $1. So, her line went under contract for two years and has an upgrade date of 12-27-16. When I got the phone home, I went to the Verizon website logged in to my account and switched the Turbo over to my UDP line and put her GS3 back on the TD line. Now the S3 is failing and she needs a new phone. She is thinking she wants the Galaxy S6.

Am I correct in thinking I can transfer my upgrade to her TD line and purchase the S6 on that line, have it shipped home, activate the phone with the SIM it ships with and as a result extend my UDP contract for an additional two years(avoiding the $20 additional charge on my UDP)? We are not big data users so I'm trying to compare overall costs of going this way or just choosing to go to one of their current shared data plans..probably one of their smaller plans.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The latter. Thanks to the FCC, I was able to just pop my sim in there and use the Jetpack as an emergency data source. (I did this because of Hurricane Sandy...had to get to get an additional line via Assumption of Liability...)

If you have any ideas, believe me I am all ears.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If I had phone insurance through vzw, and then I use the best buy method and put my old sim in my new phone, do I have to do anything else to make sure the insurance still covers my new phone?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It's getting close to crunch time for those that what to get your UDP on a new 2-year contract. My experience, I am still waiting for my Turbo 2 but my contract DID NOT change till after roughly 48 hours. I recommend playing it safe and ordering a phone asap to avoid this gray area of 48 hours. I wouldn't want anyone to get caught in this time when the 15th hits in fear that your plan may not have had enough time to change over. This is speculation if this would even happen but I would rather be safe then sorry. Plus I wouldn't want to take a risk and order a phone closer to the weekend in fear that the ordering process might take longer, say on a saturday. If anyone has more details if this is possible chime in and I'll edit my post.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok I just purchased 2 Moto X Pure Editions ($399 each) right before this announcement to change the price on the Unlimited Data Plans. We have 2 lines on the old UDPs. Both of those plans are out of contract and have been for a long time (ever since they killed Unlimited plans). I just keep buying nice used phones and/or recently new Moto X PE...

Is there anything I can do to keep my 2 Unlimited Data Plans at the current cost?

You are correct. Moving your upgrade to her line will allow her to get a new phone and your unlimited line to go back under contract. This should allow you to dodge the $20 increase if you get it done before the 15th.
