[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Boy, I appreciate all the input regarding this situation. I am following the other threads, but if this S6 can't be used on the udp line I will return it, UNLESS it can be activated on 6g line and then sold to someone that actually wants the phone. I do not want a carrier phone myself, the motivation was to keep the udp price at $30 for two more years. Waiting a couple days to see how this shakes out for others is ok, but by Thursday I make a decision because we leave for vacation and I don't want this hanging over my head and exceed the 14 day return period because I don't want this phone on my line for 2 years!

I'm hopeful there will be more answers by then. Good luck and have a great vacation :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Got off the phone with VZW, the rep stated that there are no provisions to get a subsidized phone on single line while keeping the UDP, at least according to her. She stated that the system in the background knows that phone was upgraded and will make the appropriate changes.

So I ended up having her backout all the changes and Ill return the phone to BestBuy tonight and I have a contact number to call back tomorrow to start the IPR. So I would no be surpised if others eventually have this happen to them.

Talking to a rep ....

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I did the BB method on 13th. I only have 1 line on my account:

L1: UDP N6 Moto

and just got notified that the phone has shipped should be here tomorrow. I will not activate on my line. However after reading endless threads one thought is what if I activate it on someone else VZW account (like my sisters as she has TDP). Would that still kill my UDP? Or could I just add a TDP line to my account and activate it there?

She has literally done nothing for you. She can't because the phone has not been returned. Once you return the phone, the upgrade on your line should be returned to you and your line will once again show month to month. At that point you call Verizon and ask for the IPR to restore your UDP.

The answer to either of those scenario's is unknown at this time. It is thought however that it may be an option. Just haven't heard from anyone yet to confirm the theory. Folks who have already sold their devices are sweating over this.

Even if it were to work to "activate" the phone, the phone itself will still be toxic to your UDP SIM. In other words, you will be kicked off of your UDP if you were to put your UDP SIM into the device. Don't do it!

Okay thx, I guess I will hold on to my new phone from BB and see if anyone tries it. However someone has to go first and report back. Not sure if I want to be the first or not. In any light its not looking good and will most likely need to eat the $20 up charge, as I'm never giving up my UDP. In addition VZW better be ready to see my data go through the roof.

LOL. If your other reason for upgrading was a new device, Verizon, under their new system now allows you to get a new phone and keep your UDP by making monthly payments on the device. Don't know if that sweetens the deal for you.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I tried reading a bunch of posts but started getting confused. I have 3 lines on an old Nation wide talk/txt plan. One line is a UDP and has been out of contract for years and has had an un used upgrade. If I transfer the upgrade to another line will that lose the UDP on the other line? Im still waiting to hear from others if the BB method has been quashed .

Thanks

I don't know who the resident expert is in this forum but if you do not get a response soon, try the Slickdeals thread on the subject. JulesJam is active on the forum at this moment. Good luck.

Not really as the monthly payment method is a joke since you just end up paying for the phone full price over time. I'm already doing that with Motorola for my N6. I love that phone, and it is worth it if I don't have to give VZW any more of my money. So if I ever get a new phone it will be another Nexus as I don't have to worry about all the VZW bs and cell phone manufacture bloatware a phone comes with.

So you went through Best Buy. Your reply to Ry the post 11125 implies that you used Verizon.

The following isn't specifically targeted towards you..... Everyone needs to be very clear about their situation and the method/retailer they used. Let's not contribute to the current situation by causing confusion.

If you can wait until Thanksgiving, I'll be your tester. I did the Best Buy method for my two unlimited lines on November 7th. I already have a Nexus 6P and 5X on those lines and do not need the new phones. The plan is to give the phones to my parents as a gift. They were never activated on my account, so it will be a good test to see if people can do the Best Buy Method and sell their phones without actually activating them.

The transfer methods have not been reported as being a problem, but no one knows just yet. At this point, I would recommend waiting for someone else to confirm unless you are willing to be the tester.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Att must be doing the same thing cuz I can't for the life of me upgrade and keep udp on my last line all of a sudden via Att.com

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

This is how many of us did it. A fair amount of us however have kept the phones and utilized them or planned to at some point. These are the ones who seem to be losing their UDP's. It would be helpful to know how long it has been since you sold the phone, and if the person to whom you sold the phone to has activated it on a Verizon or other account.

I took the SIM card out. So there is no tie to my account. The person who bought it from me confirmed receipt today. I don't know if he activated it, but I can confirm my line still has unlimited data on it per my Verizon account page.

Diligently monitor the next two billing cycles.

I just went thru this with AT&T. My GF wanted to upgrade her phone and when I tried to do it online I couldn't find the correct option to keep her UDP. Finally called CS and they told me not to worry, select any data plan and call once the phone arrives to activate the phone instead of doing it online and tell the representative that you want to keep your existing plan. It all went splendidly.

The switch order is no longer tied to the SIM it appears, but to the device itself. Because Verizon phones are unlocked he may end up using it on AT&T or T-Mobile and so there should be no issue. But if he activates it on a Verizon account the IMEI from the phone will be transmitted and activate the device. If you suddenly lose service within the next few days, check your account. You likely will find that you have lost your UDP and are now on a 2GB plan. Still many unanswered questions.

I'm hesitant to rely on reps. You had a good rep it appears but I'm just going to leave my last udp line month to month and either sell it or upgrade next year. I'm getting my last phone for the year for my tmobile line instead (gold note 5)
