[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just got off the phone with the same rep I talked to last night. She went through and submitted the IPR for me and took care of anything else that needed to be done. Right now my account shows 2GB plan with the new phone also but it also states that I can upgrade again and my contract is back to month to month. Now its going to take a few days to get the IPR through the system. She will call me back either when she hears about it or on Friday whichever is first. I asked her what I should do about being over the 2GB limit, she said that will take care of its self once the IPR gets taken care of and the phone will revert back to my HTC M8 also

Ill keep you all updated as I know more but this does sound like the correct process. As for what BestBuy can do for you, they can only take the phone back and reverse JUST the upgrade and NOT your plan. You will have to contact VZW after that to get the ball rolling with them with the IPR. The Bestbuy guys had heard of the IPR and the both them and the Samsung guy wanted to know also what happens in the end, seems they had some customers try the same thing possibly.

What is the number to call, and how did you initiate the call? Did you ask to speak to a supervisor, or just requested an IPR?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, so we ordered a new iPhone for my wife's line (UDP) from Best Buy on the 14th.. The phone is expected to arrive via UPS tomorrow.

In light of all those following the same process, I want to return the phone. Am I ok to just take it back to a store to return it and make sure they make the upgrade on the line available again? I've seen mention of IPR for UDP, but that is only if you lost it, right?

Correct if you have not lost the UDP you should return the phone and get the upgrade back. Then I would either check your account to make sure its OK or contact VZW to make sure the whole process was reversed. Sicne you havent activated the phone you should not loose your UDP, at least from what I have seen.

I called the normal customer service number and explained what happened and how can I get my UDP back even if it means returning the phone. She then proceeded to tell me I would need to return the phone and after that call her back to get the IPR sent in. I brought up the IPR when she was talking about getting it all reversed and she confirmed that was what she would submit.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK. So, I knew I should've pulled the trigger about a month back and now I'm kicking myself.

Can anyone comment on what would happen in this scenario:

I have an UDP w/ upgrade available. What if I were to purchase a new device on BestBuy's site using my upgrade. Ship to home. Once I receive the device, I activate that device on my dad's line (he is on a tiered plan, separate from my plan). Once it's been activated on his.....put him back on his original device, and then activate the new device on my plan.

Is that even possible? Has anyone tried this? I'm REALLY regretting not doing this sooner.

Thanks in advance, you all are really a WEALTH of knowledge out there.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

There is definitely a lot of stuff going on with that thread, but some very good information. What will be interesting is to see if selling or activating the phones on a different account will affect unlimited.

That's what i did. I sold it on Swappa. The person who bought has confirmed he received it, but not confirmed whether or not he's tried to activate it. I'm monitoring my verizon account hourly.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Looks like the safest way will be upgrade transfers which means single line or accounts with no TDP lines to transfer to may be out of luck.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wow, I just returned S6 to BB and had upgrade restored, phone had not been activated, however, the person that handled the transaction said the phones are shipping pre-activated as some have said on this thread. Fortunately, mine was not pre-activated, received it yesterday and returned today and account is back on month-to-month. The price increase has not shown up yet.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just got back from returning my phone at Best Buy. My account it back month to month. I asked the Best Buy employee to ask the Verizon rep about my unlimited data plan. She said they submitted a request to have my old plan reinstated, and to check back in 10 days. I am not going to wait that long. I will log on to chat with a Verizon rep.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I've had much more success dealing with them on the phone. Those people at instant chat just keep hitting buttons with auto replies and restate your questions back to you. Never get anything done.

Based on everything we are seeing so far, that will not work. Basically, the phones are toxic to the unlimited line that the upgrade comes from. No one is 100% sure that activating the new device on your dad's line won't trigger the plan change. It seems that this is a possibility and would at least put you back under contract. You could possibly use his upgrade later to get a new phone.

My advice would be to hold off a couple of days until more information comes to light. Basically, people just need to try different stuff to see what works. It's not ideal, but as long as you have a few more days before your billing cycle ends, there might be some sort of solution.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you with 2 Best Buy upgrades but no activation on my account. They are gifts to my parents who have their own Verizon account. I'm in a holding pattern, but I think everything will be ok with my unlimited.

I missed it.. what do you mean by "pre-activated" ??

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Apparently some of the devices had been turned on before shipping which pre-activated. At any rate,I had read about it on this thread or Slickdeals and the bb guy also assumed mine had been pre-activated before shipping (it wasn't) so my line was back month-month when I left the store. I checked the battery on my S6 and it was at 25% and it was not on.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

IPR has been filed, it will take any where from 24-48 hours to send me notification either via text or email on being approved or denied. Now to wait. Has anyone had a successful IPR. What would be a vaild reason to deny the request?

I think my billing cycle is around the 21st. So, I'll likely see the $20 charge, which isn't the WORST thing that could happen. But, if I can save $20/month I'm all for it.

He has an upgrade available on his line, so I can always use that, as well.

I'll be watching, for sure!

To my knowledge the only reason they would deny it is if you are out of the 14day return period. Now VZW could get really anal and deny them all but Im not sure how that would fair for them. Everything the rep said to me came off as if you are still in the 14 day return period and you file the IPR than you should be good.

My line was just activated yesterday. So I am well within the 14 days. Thanks for your response.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

In case no one is keep track of the craziness going on in slickdeals here is the summery of what is and isn't working:

Post 16074 updated (summarized) to keep track of it:
———————

First, thanks for taking the risk. I am assuming as our return period comes to close, we'll see many other taking the risk of trying (unless they want to stuck with a TDP plan and prefer that over a UDP plan +$20)

Second, this doesnt help in what we should do but definitely what we shouldnt do any more:

1. You "CAN NOT" simply swap the phone with someone else who is on UDP "AND" is on the same account (for e.g. your wife as it seems it will bring your wife's UDP to TDP) ==> VERIFIED through Pennesnatcher post 16041. NO GO

Remaining Test Cases to be explored:

1. What happens when you put a SIM of another " UDP" user who is "NOT" in your account to activate your subsidized phone? ==>> ?????

2. What happens when you put a SIM of a "TDP" user who "IS" in your account to activate your subsidized phone? And if after activation, you put your UDP SIM back on that phone (and return on-your-account TDP user's sim)? ==> ??????

3. What happens when you put a SIM of a "TDP" user who is "NOT" in your account to activate your subsidized phone? ==> VERIFIED through Bandit52 Post 16104. It seems a GO

Looks like we can activate the BB phone on someone else VZA account and keep UDP for now. Just thought I would share here too, in case people didn't see it.
