[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Looks like I will be ordering the iPhone SE 64gb MLMF2LL/A from Verizon's website. Once it arrives, I will shred the SIM card before power it on.

Question:
If I put a T-Mobile or AT&T SIM card inside and power on this Verizon iPhone SE on for the very first time, will that cause the phone to be locked to T-Mobile or AT&T forever?

I know this happens if the iPhone was purchased from Target and/or Best Buy. Not sure if I buy the iPhone directly from VerizonWireless.com. (because Target and/or Best Buy sells a SIM unlocked version)

Thanks for your help!
I know nothing about putting Verizon phones on other carriers.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi, I'm off my contract and have my UDP but absolutely cannot lose it.

I saw the following deal and after talking with Verizon (in-store and over the phone) I've been told I'll lose my UDP if I use the payment program. If I partake in the following Best Buy deal, will I lost my UDP?

Best Buy.com is offering Up to $450 In Best Buy Gift Cards w/ Trade In Offer or Purchase/Activation of Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge listed below. Thanks insane6012

Note, trade-in offer is valid in-stores only [Store Locator]. Only $200 Trade In-Gift Card can be used towards phone payment (Spring and Verizon Only). Terms listed on promotion page may be subject to change.
In-Store Only Trade-In Offer: Free $450 in Best Buy Gift Cards w/ Trade-In of Any Working Smartphone and Purchase and activation of Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge w/ monthly installment plan for Verizon or Sprint
Or, In-Store and Online Offer: Free $250 in Best Buy Gift Cards w/ purchase and activation of Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge w/ monthly installment plan for Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T

I just want to comment on the Best Buy $250 gift card and $200 gift card offer.(total $450 in gift cards)

I just came back from Best Buy. I traded in a cheap Net10 prepaid non-Android dumbphone that I originally bought from Walmart for $9.99 two years ago.(for the sole purpose of keeping it and using it towards trade-in offers like this) The Best Buy employee entered the model number and IMEI into their trade-in system. It showed up as $2. When he entered the new Samsung Galaxy S7's new Verizon number, the offer skyrocketed from $2 to $200 gift card. She applied the $200 to the device payment plan of the S7, making it $472. She then proceed to ring up everything. I paid the sales tax($61) and then she handed me a $250 gift card. I already spent the $250 gift card buying five $50 Exxon gas gift cards that were hanging by the cash register. Should come in handy for my roadtrip next week. Absolutely awesome deal. :)

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does anyone else have this problem? Am I going to lose my unlimited data? What's going on?

http://oi64.tinypic.com/2valfnm.jpg Screenshot for clarification

You can see on the right I selected the Unlimited Data plan. It's the only plan I can select. But on the left, the final confirmation page, doesn't show my data plan in there - no data plan is there. And my bill is MUCH lower than I normally pay? $64 a month? I currently pay $97 a month. Why am I paying much less if I include a payment plan, or am i going to get screwed and lose my UDP?

It looks like i'ts not adding my data plan. Am I screwed? I can't just upgrade my phone via a data plan and keep my UDP?

This thread is not where you should be posting. You're doing a Device Payment Plan which means you also have the $20 increase. Your unlimited data will be fine. Your bill will go up whatever the monthly price of the phone is.

So despite the screenshot showing no data plan on the confirmation page, I should be okay?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK please help. Here is my scenario. 2 phones:

Line 1: UDP $29.99
Line 2: UDP $29.99

They are reaching end of contract in a week. What do I do to extend contract? I don't need a new phone now but could still buy a phone and sell.

If I understand correctly, can I buy on BB and then activate Line 1 phone on Line 2 and vice versa? Is this possible?

Or should I buy 2 phones from Best Buy and sell each of them after destroying the SIM. And when I am ready to upgrade, buy a phone at full price?

What should I do? And if I have to buy a phone to sell which one to buy to ensure that I can sell it?

Also when you buy it from BB do I have to buy it under (1) Device payment plan or with (2) 2 year contract?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi members,

I've read through so many comments and most of the discussions are around upgrading another 2 year contract or upgrading with the old UDP rate of $29.99.

I'm out of contract and both of my lines are being charged at the new rate of $49.99 per line. I've read on other websites that Verizon will allow UDP users to keep their UDP plans while purchasing the phone through their monthly plan or pay in full, obviously.

My question has to do with using the same sim card. I'm on the Samsung S5. I want to purchase an unlocked phone at the Apple Store. Do I have to cut my existing sim card or can I take the unlock phone to the Verizon store and activate it with a new sim card. Since I'm not modify my contract, this shouldn't be a problem right? Lastly, Target and BB are offering great promo during BF, can go through them since I'm going to purchase the new phone out right?

I appreciate all the help!

That should not be a problem, you're buying the phone out right so they went change your account.

But I will add, I have seen past on here starting that once you are paying the extra $20 a line you can upgrade using a 2 year contract (discount phone) and keep your UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I'm a ex Verizon employee. My plan is still under the employee discount and pricing. Two years ago I had to upgrade through EPP. This year since I have my udp and me family plan together. I was able to do a transfer of my upgrade off my udp without it asking me to change my udp.

Do any current employees think that I should still go with the buy then sell method. Or since I'm still on the epp, I will be able to swap my phone onto my udp line?

This is not the case any longer. If you want to upgrade at the 2yr. contract price, the website forces you off the udp. I just used my upgrade today and had to choose a new data plan.

When the phone comes in I'll destroy the new sim card and put the phone on my mom's line using her existing sim. I'll keep my udp and then use her upgrade when a phone I want comes out.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can somebody please provide some advice?

Also, is it true that you cannot keep the unlimited plan even when you do the DPP? The Costco kiosk told me that.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok things have changed since I have last done this. In 2014 I did the SIM card swap on a Moto X 2014 and was able to keep my unlimited data. So thanks guys for this thread! So now I have this situation.

Line1: Upgrade $29.99 unlimited
Line2: Upgrade 1GB plan

Before I only had one line but added a line for a friend about 6 months ago. So how should I do this? Does the SIM swap still work? I read through a few pages and saw some conflicting things. I also just tried to test an upgrade on the unlimited line and the only option was for the other plans, not unlimited.I tried both contract a payment plan with same results. My friend is more than willing to switch an upgrade with me. What do you guys recommend? I want The Google Pixel.

You can upgrade line 2 and put that phone on line 1.

Then if you want you can always transfer line 1 upgrade to line 2 for a new phone on that line. But you can never put that phone on line 1.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I haven't read the thread in the last 3 or 4 weeks, so I apologize in advance. I need to make a decision quick and could use help.

L1: TDP, upgrade available
L2: UDP, upgrade available

We came to Best Buy to upgrade L1 on a 2-year contract. After activation, we planned to move it to L2 UDP. We thought that was fine.

Best Buy rep is staying that we will lose UDP on L2 if we use any kind of contract phone on L2, even if the upgrade originated and was activated on L1. He is saying our only option (besides buying outright) is to upgrade L1 on DPP. Is he right or is he just trying to boost commission??

EDIT: Best Buy says they will change it to the contract without the restocking fee if we get assurances from Verizon that the UDP will not be stripped. They got this info from their VzW liaison. Anyone know if this is valid? I thought you could do anything you want with a subsidized TDP phone. Thanks!

Number 1 rule for this thread, NEVER listen to in store reps!

I just did the same thing a couple weeks ago (with Verizon not BB) and it still works.

Yep, it's just disconcerting when they are so confident.

Did you do a DPP or 2-year contract? And did you switch it to the UDP on the Verizon website or did you just pop the UDP SIM in the new phone?

Two year contract. I think this last time I just switched SIMs. Hell I'm getting old LOL. I have done both in the past but pretty sure this time I just switched SIMs.

My contact did extend for 2 years but for some reason I still have an upgrade available. Thought about ordering another phone and selling it. But just holding tight for now.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry, another quesrion, Tx_Tuff. Here's what we now have:

L1: TDP, S7 on DPP by Best Buy
L2: UDP, upgrade available

We may just leave the DPP on L1 to avoid the hassle of going back and fixing it. While that DPP is active, can I transfer L2's upgrade to L1 and buy a phone on 2-year contract to extend the $29.99 UDP? It would be 4ever method and leave phone on TDP. I would destroy the SIM it ships with and leave it on L1. Do we have to pay off the L1 DPP before making that transfer?

EDIT, I started attempting the process on the VzW site, and it's telling me to pay off the DPP and upgrade that line. I also tried on the Best Buy site and don't see an option to transfer. BB says L1 is not eligible to upgrade. I may be stuck with BBM for L2's contract extension.

Yeah I don't know anything about DPP but makes since you would have to pay it off.
