iPad or Tab

The Moto Tab looks nice, but the Galaxy Tab has really made me rethink the utility of a 10" tablet. I find that the Galaxy Tab form factor is perfect for me because it's so portable.

While it's pretty obvious that a 10" screen looks bigger than a 7" screen compared to a 3-4" screen, my point is that people consider the iPad to be way bigger than the Galaxy Tab even though the size difference is 2.7", but somehow, the 2.7"-3.2" difference between the Galaxy Tab and a smartphone makes it only a little bit bigger.

And if the Galaxy Tab were 800 X 480, the claim of just a bigger Evo would be a bit more justified, but at 1024 X 800, it has 60% more pixels. So not only is it 2-3 times bigger in area, it also displays 60% more information on the screen. So the "slightly larger than my smartphone" argument is just a specious talking point.

A resolution bump to 1500 X 900 would be awesome, but I'd even take 1280 X 768 for my next 7" tablet.

Again, a lot of it is due to the wider Aspect Ratio of the screen on the iPad. The Tab is apprx. 1.6 times taller and twice as wide as an Evo 4G. The iPad only about 1.27 times taller than the Tab but is the same 1.6 times as wide as the Tab, which makes it quite a bit wider when compared to the Tab as the tab is when compared to the EVO 4G.

It is this width which is giving the illusion of a dramtically larger screen, even though it's actually proportionally less of an increase from the Tab as the Tab is from the EVO. (The Tab's screen is 62% larger than the EVO, whereas the iPad is only 39% larger than the Tab)

That's fine, but I'm trying to present facts, not understand why people are spouting nonsense. But it is nonsense, illusion or not. And when it comes from someone who claims to have owned the Galaxy Tab, well... I'm dubious.

But the truth in this case lies with the perception, not the facts.

It's like someone saying the sky is light blue and they like it better when it's deep blue and someone responding with the effects water vapour has on the perceived colour temperature.

While the response may be fact, it is completely irrelevant to the discussion.

I think the TAB is a better match for me, but wonder if I'm going to always 'want' that big pretty iPad.

Any advice on how to make this decision?

I had a 3G iPad when they first came out. After it sat on my desk for a week straight not being used I sold it on eBay (great resale value btw). As soon as the galaxy tab came out I bought it and have been very happy with it! I use it everyday, unlike the bulky iPad. With front and rear cameras and Android the Galaxy tab is work horse much more competent than iPad. Having the ability to easily use it one handed and its light weight really makes it attractive. My wife loves having the ability to just slide it into her purse and go. I am able to slip it into the inside pocket of my leather jacket :)

I agree w/ sugar on the ipad. I have both and i really like the ipad but I am finding that i can do more w/ the android tab. There is just more upside right now w/ android. they handed over their boa constrictor mindset to apple along time ago.

I don't have an iPad, but one of my colleagues does. After watching her struggle to haul that giant thing out of her bag for the millionth time, I decided that size DOES matter and, in this case, smaller is better. I think the iPad is very pretty and it does a lot of really neat things, however, I need more portability -- something that bridges the gap between my netbook and my smartphone and the GTab accomplishes that perfectly. I also like that there is more memory and that the Tab is expandable for literally half the price of a similar iPad model. I think that both devices have their niche and their respective places in the market. I prefer the openness of Android, the portability of the GTab, and the flexibility allowed by memory expansion.

Get a nook color and root it! Ban! Tablet!

Sent from my rooted nook color!

Ha! You know, I checked that thing out thinking that I could root to tabify it, but the Nook is too slow for my needs and video looked all checkered. But, it's a good way to get a tablet on the cheap.

Blackberry Bridge like app on Android?

Hello everyone! Hope everyone is having a good time. So I have a very interesting question that has been on my mind for awhile. RIM has announced the Blackberry Playbook awhile back and I was reading it and listening and watching videos on it and I learned that the Playbook will be coming with a app called Blackberry Bridge, which connects your Blackberry with your playbook via bluetooth. So I was wondering if the developers of Android will do something like that with their products? It would be nice to be at home and charging my DInc in one room while playing with my Galaxy Tab in the other and not have to get up and check my messages but instead have them be pushed from my DInc to my Tab.

TOTALLY agreed. This would be amazing if there was an app like this.

Had an Ipad sold it and got the Tab

Paying close to $800 and not being able to see videos on my Ipad was a huge turnoff. It drove me crazy everytime I saw the "you need a flash plug in" message. The nail in the coffin was when Jobs said he would never put flash on the iphone or Ipad. I love my galaxy tab. It's much more portable. The size is perfect. It's lighter and I love how you can hold it in one hand.

What is funny about jobs statement is he would never put flash in a iPhone it iPad. Well he kind of did as skyfire will allow you goto pages w/ flash video and play them. Now if the browser will fully support all flash enabled sites. I would love to see jobs eat his words.

This tab smokes! I got the thumbs keyboard and selected the 7" tablet keyboard and am finally loving portrait typing. No comparison with typing on the iPad. This is way better. It was a do now thing as a present. After a day of reading and 30 minutes in best buy I knew the Tab was the only way to go.
I really don't see this thing running Honeycomb. Gingerbread will be sweet, and I pray it comes but from what I've read Sammy isn't the best at updating lol. And Honeycomb looks processor hungry.
If the Xoom is affordable at its base model I may look at it. If not I will root this Tab and load the only ROM for it.

Spent the weekend running honeycomb on my nook color, gotta say I don't regret not getting the tab.

Here is my problem:

My iPad is used for news and media.

My RSS feeds go through Reeder (no android version), which allows me to tag articles for readitlater (no android version).

I also use it when I travel to load my video podcasts (I can use double twist here) and movies.

Next, I use Zinio (no android app here yet) for all of my magazines.

Kindle works for both, as does my pdf's and photos.

I don't use music, although pandora is an option at times.

My thought was to dump my overdrive, and use the tab as a hotspot when needed. (sprint's 4g is not that good, but the 3G has been solid for me)

Concerns are smoothness between apps, and lack of future content.

iPad 2 will have hotspot, all my apps I am use to, AND skype video.

But it is huge!!!!

Ugh, what to do??

My first tablet purchase was the ARCHOS 70 Android tablet. I was a bit intoxicated by the Iphan /pad hype whilst reading through their biased forums. I went to Best Buy and purchased an Ipad just before New Years Day. Turning it on, I couldn't do anything until I plugged it into Itunes - and that's where things started...and ended eventually.

Once plugging it into Itunes and downloading $100 in apps over the course of a two-month period (just to get the functionality I had on the Android platform for Free), I got sick of this never-ending cycle. For example, I purchased the Craigslist app for IOS (a polished view for the normal craigslist site..I paid around 2 or 3 bucks for it), I was soon presented with an updated version of the SAME app from the developer that allowed me to POST to craigslist! .yay!.. or not.. $3 more dollars Bi###. So I paid for it being the financial fool that i am.

I used that very same app to post that iPad on Craigslist. I couldn't take it anymore..I wish I could have included the apps I purchased as a bonus to the person I was selling it to - but Apple doesn't play like that. They've made an Ipad 2 now.. and it's competitively priced - but they're like a casino - they know'll they'll get the money from you from app purchases as they've stripped everything from a stock Ibrick..interesting how the Itunes store's policies changed for developers recently - Apple wants that money.

After about 4 days of having my listing sit on craigslist ..a gentleman offered me a trade - My Ipad 16gig wifi .. for a Galaxy 16 gig (Sprint one). I thought, "Why not? It has GPS ..ipad wifi doesn't"..

I also knew that i wouldn't end up purchasing $100 in apps to make the thing useful. .just about everything good for Android is frickin' FREE.

I know Apple Fans will say .."Apple is giving ipad purchasers $100 back to those who purchased the Ipad and feel ripped off with the release of the Ipad 2" .. yeah? well there is a 2 week window on that - KICK in the Balls.

Now i'm back to the Android Tablet - happier than ever. It's loaded with apps and works. I haven't spent a dollar yet because all these apps are FREE - but I plan to because I want to support the Android developers who make this great platform what it is.

I've had an Android phone for quite some time now and I've donated to developers - it helps keep the ass kicking in Gear - Watch out! Android's not gonna drop the ball, Apple!............>>Sauce. ;)

Itunes is the main reason I cannot bring myself to get an ipad. I can do more with my Evo in a browser than on an ipad (like download files).
