Blind hate is as bad as blind love.
I very much appreciate what Android has become, just as I appreciate what Apple brought to the table. But I will not ignore Android's flaws just as I do not ignore Apple's. Each OS has its strong points and each OS has some glaring flaws.

Prior to the launch of iPhone 4 last night, I wrote a piece speculating on 10 reasons not to buy it. Personally I don't understand these kinds of "don't buy" articles. Competition breeds improvements - in quality, quantity, price and service. I applaud Apple's commitment to this competition. Personally, I chose the Evo over the iPhone4g but not out of any sort of loyalty to a brand - the entire package just works better for me.
The more people that buy X the higher the demand for X; generally the higher the demand for X, the higher the price. If someone introduces Y then all of a sudden the game changes drastically.
It's no accident that most smartphones cost around the same. it's no accident that voice and data plans all cost and deliver around the same thing. Obviously there are differences - and it's in those gray areas that people make their choices as those differences can be huge on an individual level, but within about 10-20% we're all paying about the same price. That's not a coincidence. If the HTC Evo was the ONLY smartphone on the market it would cost 3 times the price it does now, and more importantly would certainly be a VASTLY inferior product to what we now have in our hands.
Competition keeps price low. It also puts these devices in the hands of huge percentages of the population - that also keeps prices low. It's simple economics.
For me, the iPhone was a pass - but after owning a Macbook for the last year I doubt I will ever go back to a windows system unless something drastically changes. I love apple and i hope they sell millions of iPhones and generate a ton of R&D revenue for the next device that's going to compete fiercely for my money.
I think the perfect example of what i'm talking about is the iPad. Personally there are many many things that would keep me from buying an iPad - but what I love is the fact that Apple has almost certainly breathed new life into the stagnating tablet industry - i'm excited to see what comes next. While the iPhone may not be the best in every single benchmark - anyone that says it's not a trend-setter is kidding himself.

What I don't understand, is what did the iPhone 4 address to resolve so many qualms? It doesn't actually have anything new that the average consumer can use.
Multi-tasking, HD video shooting and editing in the phone, creating folders etc. These may not be big deals to Android owners, but they're definite upgrades yo iphone users, not to mention the screen is more ideal for book reading, which the iPhone will have 3 top providers for. Does Android have Kindle, BN, or iBooks apps? We can claim we'd never read on a phone, but many many people do. Ive grown to love it actually.
Displaced, your are completely right and seem to be totally unbiased toward one company or another. I agree with what you are saying. The thing that bothers me are the reviews that tech folks give to the iphone. So many of them think that Apple and Jobs walk on water. I just saw an article this morning talking about how Apple is breaking new ground with thier voice chat, what! This is not ground breaking we already have it on the EVO. Just wanted to share my thoughts and frustrations. But again I agree with your philosophy
A. Multi-tasking was already announced as part of iPhone OS 4, and actually is not true multitasking. But that's a whole different rant.
B. Creating folders, again, part of the OS, not the iPhone itself.
C. HD video, okay, I'll take that.
D. Editing video? Well, first, it's a separate, extra application. Second, not something the iPhone 4 offers itself. Third, it already had minor editing, I don't forsee anyone using it on the iPhone, just as they didn't use it on the Mac.
E. Android is getting apps for those, IIRC, and there are generic ebook readers already (and of course, excellent PDF support).
F. The screen isn't actually more ideal for reading. It's still a backlit screen. They cranked up the resolution for no good reason.

As a huge cell phone nerd I take each device for what it is. I may like some things on one device and I may like things on another. I always told my friends (who are iPhone owners) that the iPhone is a great device but it's just not something that appeals to me. I've been reading up on the iPhone4 and nothing about it makes me want to switch to AT&T just to get it. I'm happy with my current Android device and when I upgrade to an EVO I'm sure I will be happy with that as well.
I have to give Apple credit though, the way they present their stuff makes you actually believe that its ground breaking new stuff! I had to stop and think after watching it, wait, this stuff is already OLD features that other phones have had for many years now. I have to admit, iTunes makes things SO easy and until Android/Doubletwist gets to that point, Apple will not be completely gone from my vison...maybe not even the iPhone...

Glad it finally got multitasking but AT&T has horrible reception in my area and way too expensive. If it came to Sprint, we could talk. iTunes is excellent and my only connection to Apple now. Hopefully Android/Doubletwist gets their act together soon so I can drop it completely.
