Is a Droid Turbo/Maxx just as good as a Nexus?

Re: nexusa 6 same as the droid turbo

VZW hemhawed with releasing the Moto X since spec wise it was very similar to the Maxx. With the Maxx, VZW had full glutton control straight down to the bloat and ugly carrier marking.

Other than advertising (which unless its a droid verizon never really advertised) the moto x got updates before the maxx and droid line....

The X was available on AT&T on Aug 23, Verizon on Aug 29 and Sprint on Sept 6. But don't let facts get in the way of your ignorant Verizon bashing

Droid Turbo should last 27% more than Nexus 6

This is based on their specs. Both have same screen tech, same SoC and same resolution, and share many of the same internals and features, so they are pretty comparable. Of course real world performance will depend on software differences, but its a good guideline.

And when you look at it, 27% more isn't really that big a deal, at least for me. Looking at the huge battery and smaller screen of the Turbo, I had the impression it would be maybe 2x the battery life, but that's not going to be the case.

Re: Droid Turbo should last 27% more than Nexus 6

wonder why the battery life won't be way longer? Seems weird. Is the droid turbo available in Canada? I would like to check one out. I really like the Motorola features.

Re: Droid Turbo should last 27% more than Nexus 6

Droid will have bloat that will eat up more power, and nexus 6 will have project Volta which will consume less. Given how much larger the droid's battery is, I do expect it will last longer, but not that much more (though it, too, will benefit from project Volta when it gets Lollipop).

Re: Droid Turbo should last 27% more than Nexus 6

When you think about it, even though screen sizes are vastly different, they still have the same number of pixels to push, so for the most part, it will take the same amount of juice to power the screen.

Larger display @ same resolution = lower pixel density, requiring more power/pixel to produce same effective nits of brightness for the overall display.

Specs wise, yes. Updates come similar in time (from the past year, would assume that will continue) but the verizon bloat may slow things down some what. Not to mention you are pretty much at the mercy of verizon for support since this is a verizon exclusive whereas the nexus is on multiple carriers so it will have more developer support down the road, even if google stops supporting it.

Wanted the Nexus 6 but getting the Turbo instead

So I've been a long time apple user and switched to android twice before and one of those times was a nexus device, which I loved. Eventually I went back to Apple but upon seeing the nexus 6 coming I wanted to get back and see what lollipop is all about.

Well, I started researching and with my patience being limited and Verizon staying mum on when the device is coming (I'm not buying it outright) I started looking at the turbo. From what I've read the Moto UI is very "thing" on top of android and actually has some nice features to it.

So between that and the battery I decided to give the turbo a try. It'll also be a little less "shocking" going from a 4" screen to a 5.2" vice a 6" screen.

Anyone kind of get into this same situation?

Edit: just to update everyone, I ended up going with the Turbo and so far I absolutely love it. I have the ballistic nylon 64gb version and its very very snappy. The battery life is a lot better than my iPhone 5 was but the claims of 48hrs is a little overblown. Then again I'm a "moderate-heavy" user and got an entire day with no issues and juice to spare. However, with the nexus having the same specs and smaller battery it does make me apprehensive.

Now coming from an iPhone which has very premium feel of the hardware I was concerned coming to android again because my last two device (galaxy nexus and s2) felt very plasticky. I can say with no hesitation that this device feels great, it's solid and has a good weight to it. The ballistic nylon backing looks and feels incredible, those that say the phone looks dated must not have held one in person. The capacitative buttons may be a thing of android past and I can understand, but IMO I like it.

Good luck to everyone and hopefully some news of the nexus comes soon. To those that are on the fence it'll mostly come down to size preference. Other than that don't worry you're getting a great device if you decide on the turbo.

All I can say is ... Go with the phone you want! At the end of the day you're going to be the one using it day to day so you have to go with something that you know you'll enjoy :).

I would be in line today to pick up a turbo if it wasn't for the impending release of Nexus 6. I love what Motorola has done to the new line of Droids. I don't like the capacitive buttons, but other than that it's a perfect phone.

Preposterous decision to go with that hideous 2009-style phone.

You're not far off, but have you actually held one in your hand? Last year's model was one of my favorite phones to own.

Re: Wanted the Nexus 6 but getting the Turbo instead

You can not go wrong with either of these devices.
I did not think i would like a big screen, but that all changed when i upgraded to a note 2 and now i do not want to go with a smaller screen.

Your best bet is to read reviews and take a look at each one in person before you decide.
Good Luck,

Good Luck,

Unless you want a unlocked bootloader then the turbo will be locked tight

Re: Wanted the Nexus 6 but getting the Turbo instead

Thanks for the responses. The biggest draw back is the actual buttons and the locked bootloader, neither of which are deal breakers for me.

I did go yesterday and held the Moto x and thought it was a great size for me and really liked the form factor. The note 4 was also there and going from an iPhone 5 to that was just crazy, so I was worried with the nexus being even bigger that it might be too much for me at this point.

I'll give the turbo a go and see how it does, I can always return it within the 14 days and see where the nexus is at then. In the mean time it'll introduce me back into android and a bigger phone.

I think you're making a good choice either way. A lot of people complain about the capacitive buttons, which I'm not a fan of either, but consider that the iPhone has had a big one-button circle since the start, so having actual buttons isn't that old. From the videos, the Turbo looks great and will surely be updated quickly.

Thanks. At Verizon now going through with it. The ballistic nylon looks/feels awesome. Android itself will be an adjustment, but a good one.
