Is a Droid Turbo/Maxx just as good as a Nexus?

Re: Wanted the Nexus 6 but getting the Turbo instead

I think you're making a good choice either way. A lot of people complain about the capacitive buttons, which I'm not a fan of either, but consider that the iPhone has had a big one-button circle since the start, so having actual buttons isn't that old. From the videos, the Turbo looks great and will surely be updated quickly.

No, it does not look great. It looks like ****.

I think it looks "OKAY" I think the N6 looks a lot better and I wouldn't want to give up the added real estate the N6 offers.....

Re: Wanted the Nexus 6 but getting the Turbo instead

The device itself is intriguing. I really like the ballistic back version. The front however looks some what dated & the capacitive buttons don't help. Motorola is on fire now & my favorite OEM. I can't wait to see what they offer next year

Re: Wanted the Nexus 6 but getting the Turbo instead

Go with the Turbo, at least there is actual stock of it to be sold. Waiting on the N6 would be stupid if you need a new phone now. Once again we have NO information from Google about release date, nothing on the debacle that was "pre-ordering" yesterday. The screen transition would be easier as well coming from an iPhone, I guess only draw back is capacative buttons

Re: Google can easily sell the Moto X as a smaller Nexus

I'm still deciding between these two phones and I rather wait for the actual review between them, I have the Moto X 2014 now so I don't need to be a hurry. I am not impressed with the recent photo leaks for the Nexus 6, so I rather wait to see more camera samples from variety of people. I am not impressed with my Moto X camera in term of a flagship so I don't want to drop $700 for another phone that won't take any better photos, especially one that is probably too big for me to use daily.

Looking at the Android Central's hand on of the Droid Turbo, there are a lot of Verizon bloatwares and the phone didn't seem perfectly smooth like my Moto X, so I wouldn't be getting the Verizon version. There is supposed to be a Brazil unlock version so I rather wait to see if there will be a GSM unlock version compatible with US LTE. The Droid Turbo is slightly cheaper and come with the turbo charger which seems like a good idea.

I'll wait it out and see, I might just be content and stick with the Moto X. Maybe I could wait for used Nexus 6 on Swappa by holiday time when people are short of cash and realize the Nexus 6 is too big for them. I'm open to the idea of Nexus 5 $100 off fire sale as well.

I went and played with one today in store, and it was definitely lag free, even with the demo software and all of verizon bloat. It was more smooth than the droid maxx and moto x beside it.

Re: Google can easily sell the Moto X as a smaller Nexus

I understand that the Droid Turbo goes on sale today at Verizon (at least that's what I read), so how long of a wait are we in for to see the release of the Moto Maxx (a.k.a. the Droid Turbo for non-Verizon carriers)? Does anyone know?

November 5 is when it is expected to be announced: A global version of Motorola Droid Turbo to be unveiled in Brazil - GSMArena.com news

As for release after that, hopefully, you'll hear something on that date.

Re: Wanted the Nexus 6 but getting the Turbo instead

I've been debating these 2 as well. I had the S3 and then traded someone for a Note2. I love the screen size, but it's too flat and doesn't feel good in the hand. I've been waiting a long time for a good Motorola phone as I've been wanting to go back to them. I loved my Droid X for 4 years ago. Excellent signal and durability.

Both phones have the specs I want. I love how the Droid Turbo is built tough, but want the screen size of the Nexus 6. I'm wondering how tough the N6 will be. Don't want it to be so fragile that it breaks when dropped.

To you maybe. Why are you such a negative nancy? Let the person get the phone they want. No need to constant bad mouth a device you clearly don't like. Why do you care what phone the OP gets? If they like the turbo, they like the turbo, you sound as bad as the apple fanboys. Just be glad they are using android...

Re: Wanted the Nexus 6 but getting the Turbo instead

I feel your pain. I've been patiently waiting too, but I'm also itching to upgrade. I really wanted to love the Turbo, but after playing with it in the store, I've come to the conclusion that the phone is just too fat and heavy. The previous version (Maxx) felt ok in the hands, but this phone does not.

I am starting to wonder how long exactly Verizon will take to release this phone, as I for one am not willing to pay $600 up front. If I had to guess, the VZ N6 will drop sometime in mid december or early January. Verizon wants to sell as many Turbos and Z3vs as possible, and will hold off the Nexus through the holiday season. Its kinda looking like the Galaxy Nexus launch all over again.

I'll give it until Black Friday, and if no news comes I'll take whatever Moto X deal is going on at the time and end this madness.

If you think the turbo is heavy, the nexus 6 is larger and heavier by a lot

Re: Wanted the Nexus 6 but getting the Turbo instead

So I've been a long time apple user and switched to android twice before and one of those times was a nexus device, which I loved. Eventually I went back to Apple but upon seeing the nexus 6 coming I wanted to get back and see what lollipop is all about.

Well, I started researching and with my patience being limited and Verizon staying mum on when the device is coming (I'm not buying it outright) I started looking at the turbo. From what I've read the Moto UI is very "thing" on top of android and actually has some nice features to it.

So between that and the battery I decided to give the turbo a try. It'll also be a little less "shocking" going from a 4" screen to a 5.2" vice a 6" screen.

Anyone kind of get into this same situation?

My advice is do not write off 5.5-6" 'big' phones unless you try them out first. It is very very easy to get used to and you cannot of back. I know many people who went from a 4" iPhone to 5.5" 6 plus and they couldn't be happier, before the switch they were all concerned about the big jump.

I'd say that the main disadvantage is the Verizon bloatware, some of which you can't disable unless you root. It's difficult to know how much that bloatware might interfere with performance.

Also, consider that the 4.4.4 update for the Droid Maxx seemed to come with a number of issues, while the 2013 Moto X has been less problematic.

I definitely disabled all bloatware...without root

That's good to hear. Even all of the Verizon stuff? I remember on my old Razr Maxx that I couldn't disable Backup Assistant Plus, which annoyed me to no end.

If you want a good camera I'd forget about anything from Motorola. The moto x's camera's are crap. If camera is of major importance, go with a Samsung, Apple or a Sony made device. Motorola just doesn't know how to make a quality camera.

Agree. It is a shame their software is so bad, because the sensors they use are fine, I mean its the same sensors as in other high end devices, just for some reason produces pictures that are way below other flagship devices.

The sensor in the Nexus 6 is fine, and even the sensor in the Moto X 2014 is fine, the problem on Motorola's side is the software. That said, all hands on reports with the Nexus 6 say the camera is quite good. Not to mention the added control over camera work that comes with Lollipop (raw image capture).

We are 10 days from seeing real reviews of the Nexus 6 so maybe we should just wait and see what they say about the camera before jumping to conclusions?
