Is anyone on Project Fi yet?

Bought my Nexus from the fi store. Arrived today with sim installed. So far so good. Google Voice number transferred in thirty minutes. Sweet. Got the welcome box and everything.

I suspect you're right, for just that reason, but I'd like to be sure, as losing the ability to use both lines on one phone would be a deal-breaker for me.

I signed up for Fi today and had some questions so I had Google call me. I asked and they said absolutely only one line one on Fi.

This is expected - That you can only have one number associated with a Project Fi Google account.

When you setup Google Voice, you are required to enter a forwarding number and if that number is another Google Voice number, it is not accepted. What we're asking is if a Project Fi number would be accepted with setting up a second Google/Voice account.

Further, if a second account was already setup to forward to 000-555-1212 (Before Fi) and you then ported that number into your Fi account, would your secondary google still forward to 000-555-1212?

Is it really that much of a pricing breakthrough? I got the Fi invite, went on their website to estimate my monthly costs, and looks exactly the same as I'm paying for T-Mobile. What is the advantage of it??

For those who use 1-2GB or less of data per month it's a very good deal. If you use 3GB or more, not so much.

Otherwise, the idea is rather than depend on a single service provider to supply satisfactory connections, Fi seamlessly combines the capabilities of the T-Mobile and Sprint networks, plus data and WiFi calling via thousands of 'certified' WiFi connections.

If is about more than price alone. It's about changing how cellphone service works.

Android since v1.0. Linux user since 2001.

Project Fi can save the right person money, but it's not about that, it's about connecting to the best quality network, all the time.

Fi determines the best quality network, whether that is T-Mobile, Sprint, or open Wifi and connects to that seamlessly.

Regarding costs, if you choose a 3GB plan, that's $30 on top of the $20 unlimited voice and texts. If you only use 1.5GB of your 3GB, you get $15.00 back.

This is the key that a lot of people are missing. You literally only pay for the data you use. On other carriers, you have to pay for the next GB above what you use to avoid being throttled or charged overage fees. Fi is priced to the % of GB that you use.

That is what I'll do whenever I get my invite. Hopefully the second account doesn't throw a fit.

Its really more about the technology and coverage/flexibility that you get with what they are doing. The rebates/discounts will be nice though.

Got my phone and got it up and running. Left Verizon behind. Did a little test drive on a call. Started in the house on WiFi, left and drove around a bit. Quality stayed nice and clear and I didn't notice any drop off from switching tower and the like. Didn't try to use data while on the call. We will see how things go over the weekend.

Love the Nexus 6 so far. It was going to be my next phone anyway if I had stayed on Verizon. 2 thumbs up so after a few hours of use.

Only thing I was a bit sad about was the welcome kit did not ship with the phone, guess I'll have to wait a bit for it.

For a separate work telephone number, I've been trying to get a definitive answer to this before deciding if I would try Fi and I believe it to be a non-issue. Google Hangouts itself receives and makes your calls, not your telephone service.

Remove your forwarding number from your Google Voice settings page and ensure your calls are going to Google Chat instead. As long as you're integrated with and using Hangouts, it all works (Mobile data or WiFi). Single caveat would be areas where you don't have adequate data or wifi available.

I just got my invite today. I registered on the first day and I'm in Cincinnati, Ohio. Now I just need to figure out if I'm going to dump Verizon.

I requested an invite the day they opened up, but my status is that they're "still determining my eligibility". I wonder what that means? Does that mean my local T-Mobile and Sprint coverage isn't up to snuff? That could be concerning. I'm in the Cleveland, Ohio area, for what it's worth.

A question for those that are on Fi, though. Is there a way to actually tell that Google's VPN is in place while using WiFi? Or is it just something that is so behind the scenes that there's no specific indicator either way and you just have to trust them at face value that it's working? Sometimes I, for example, will check my bank account via my phone, and if I get hooked onto some public WiFi without paying attention, I'd be super nervous about whether the VPN is in place or not to keep my data safe.

It was pretty obvious to me first time I noticed it - I was in the Sterling, VA Wegman's and I happened to look at my phone - in the notification/status bar was a little key icon - which indicates that Fi is connected to an open WiFi network via a VPN, as described in:

For those that have jumped from Verizon, how has service been? I'm still debating if I'm going to switch. Is there issues with with WiFi to network switching?

I think it's just Google being cautious. It it could be they are still working out deals in certain areas, or maybe carrier hardware isn't up to speed everywhere.
