When I call a non-working number the operator answers, a Verizon operator?

Straight Talk is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). This means that they do not own their own network, so they rely on other carriers' network. Straight Talk offers several devices, and depending on the device, determines which carriers network is used. If you have a CDMA device, chances are you are using the Verizon network. That is probably why you are getting the error message from Verizon.
