AC Question

Hi,
I have a new Samsung S7. Out of the box it shows a dead droid with yellow triangle with exclamation point on recovery screen (vol up + power + home).
After that you enter recovery mode. When I press reboot red text appears too fast to read. I did not root the device. This happens out of the box.

According to samsung technical support this means custom OS was installed or at least an attempt at that was made and that an official new device should show a happy droid instead on this particular screen. They also say this voids warranty.

However there are some people that say this is the normal image on recovery screen.

So is this normal or not? And does this void warranty?

Welcome to Android Central!
KNOX 0x1 voids warranty.
This splashscreen means that a custom OS was installed on this phone.
Best regards,Mikey. For any more questions,PM me. I hope you found what you were looking for.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge SM-G935F.

Thank you,

Are you 100% sure this is not normal? I've had this happen in 4 S7 devices out of the box from 4 different sellers. Sent them all back because of Samsungs comment on this. Yet it seems really weird that multiple sellers apparently install custom software on devices they sell as new and factory unlocked right?

I have the same issue on my Verizon S7. I have never rooted it. I did install Good Lock before, but I doubt that's the cause. I do have the SD card unmounting issue, but I do not know if the two are related.

FYI I just checked the Phone Info app. While I have the dead Android and yellow exclamation mark in recovery, it indicates that Knox is 0x0. Assuming the app is correct, Knox is NOT tripped.

The standard recovery on Samsung devices will send you to a screen that has the android on it's back with an exclamation point. That does not mean Warranty Void or any such thing unless KNOX status is other than 0x0. You can get to that screen by going into recovery alone.

This is what Samsung says:
Thank you for sending the attachment picture. From the description of the issue it seems like the phone has been rooted. It means a custom OS (Unofficial Samsung OS) was tried to install in the phone and the phone is not supporting that custom OS. Also I would like to tell you that this issue does not appear on any Samsung phone that runs with the official Samsung OS.

You do not see anything like that on the recovery mode. You see this in download mode.

When I:

1. Power the phone off
2. Enter recovery via power/home/volume up all at once,

I then see "Installing System Update" and afterwards, I see the yellow exclamation mark with the dead Android (Xs as eyes). This is recovery mode and not download mode.

As mentioned, Phone Info app indicates that Knox is 0x0

I told Samsung exactly that (how I got to that screen) and attached a picture of that dead droid. See Samsung's reply above. They also told me on the phone that that droid pic voids warranty. I don't know I'm not an expert. I do know people who do not have a dead droid on recovery screen but no droid at all or a happy one.

My phone is a release day s7 that I ordered from Best Buy. I never rooted it and find it unlikely that anyone rooted it before I acquired it.

Note that I mentioned Good Lock earlier because .(i) it requires a reboot to install and (ii) the Galaxy App store only gives you the option to update it (rather than install it) even once you have uninstalled it. This to me is a bit odd and I have no way of knowing whether it is related to the dead Android issue I see in recovery.

I have a brand new tab s2...bought it from Costco...factory sealed. I just went into recovery mode and I get the dead Droid and the triangle with the exclamation point. It's perfectly normal

Also, my brand new note 5 purchased from my carrier did the same thing

Well, this dead droid doesn't show up on my Samsungs when going to recovery mode.

Do you all have carrier branded devices?

Edit. Just tried it. Apparently it does. But just a split second.
