Is the battery really terrible on the Galaxy S5?

I would say the battery is great

I'm very happy with my battery. At work with WiFi and cell cutting in and out, texting, checking email, news, etc... first thing in the morning my battery goes down to 95% after the first two hours of use.

If I'm driving down the interstate with no WiFi and very little screen time, just a few text my battery will often still be at 100-99% after the first two hours of the day.

I hardly ever see it below 40% even during a long day with lots of screen time.

I come from a iPhone 4 & 5 over the last four years and the battery life in both iPhone where ok for me, but the battery life on my new s5 is really impressive!

I installed All-In-One Toolbox which has a background task/cache decrapifier. Run it and it kills off some 650MB of background tasks that don't need to be running. I went 2 days on a charge and no problems with battery life so far.

i took my phone back to the Three shop and explained my problem and they exchanged the phone for me no problem for a brand new phone and to see if that works but im finding exactly the same problem really ive had it home and done all the battery saving tips and i still find the battery poor.. Admittedly im using the phone alot but no more than i used to use my old HTC One X+, But i think for a flagship phone that the receipt from the Three shop rates at £670 to be charging the phone 2 times a day is poor in my opinion..

What apps could you possibly be using that you are draining a mint Samsung S5 twice in one day? I think there must be a culprit!

Are you using stock Samsung? Reset the phone and install one by one. I have about 200 apps no problems here.

I'm extremely happy with the battery in this phone. I unplugged it at 10am and it was at 40% at 5am.

I have a sim free s5 and it runs on the 3 network ..... I found battery to be quite poor too ..... it felt like it was alive in my pocket and draining battery when I wasn't using it (which I hate) I was easily using 2%--4% battery an hour even in standby with no tasks running and the screen off

I checked settings and they seemed fine , screen dimmed down , sync settings to every couple of hours for most apps and I even have power saver turned on apart from the greyscale etc etc

I then thought id try juice defender out in the store , it has worked really well , I just put it on normal settings , I think if no data is being used when the screen goes off it switches off data while not being used and connects again when the screen came on

it has worked really well for me , I know some die hard android users will say it is useless and blah blah blah but it was easy to set up , hasn't interfered with my useage and also fixed the battery drain which I can only presume was a ongoing data connection etc

now I can loose 1-2% in a whole night of sleep instead of over 20%

I love Lumia phones because of the camera , but windows is a little bit behind android as a mature o/s , I was going to sell the s5 because I don't like the camera ..... turns out I might keep it and use it as my phone and one of the reasons being the great battery life and also a removable battery which will be handy when I travel asia then use the 1020 as a go everywhere pocket friendly high quality camera ;-)

Well, it doubtless depends on what you do, as others have noted. If the hotspot is accidentally left on, that can suck up power. I am doing much better than I did with my Iphone 5. With modest usage the Iphone needed to be charged every night, more than that, also once during the day. With the S5 it is, respectively, every two days or overnight, so the S5 battery lasts about twice as long.

I have pretty bad battery life... Off the charger at 7:30 am and at 30% by 4 PM. Screen on time is @ 2 hours and I spend about the same amount on WiFi. I just bought an extra battery and battery charger to swipe once I get home.

The panda has spoken

I just got the S5 2 weeks ago and the battery is flawless for me. On a single charge (100% to 0%) I get about 36 to 42 hours of battery with heavy use (texting, phone calls, email, social networking). But I also put on the battery saver, so that down-clocks the CPU, dims your screen, and turns off touch key light, which saves you a lot of battery. If you don't mind losing a little power on your performance then I say throw on that power saver.

I only have the Screen brightness and touch light restricted, I won't restrict the CPU power. Otherwise, when I wasn't using the battery saver I was getting about 28 hours of battery. I'm at 57% battery this very moment with 16 and a half hours on no charge. So I should get about 36 hour of battery life.

Also make sure you're charging the phone correctly, only charge it when it's close to being dead (Less than 5%) or is dead. This ensures that all the cells in the battery are working properly and retain a charge over time. Charging it every night with 50% battery still left is going to diminish the over all life of the battery very quickly. You'll see a huge difference in battery life if you allow your phone to waste all of the energy it stores before charging again.

^^^ just to clarify with modern batteries regular top ups aren't bad for batterys and actually letting it drain all the way down and charging is much worse for it then regular top ups ;-)

with nickel batteries you would be right , memory effect could occur and batteries should of been let to run down then charge up when as flat as possible ..... but we now use lithium-ion batteries and they should be topped up regularly and not drained to their minimum if possible ;-)

all info on that can be found on google ;-)

well buxz777, that's not what I've experienced with this phone (or anything lithium-ion/nickel for that matter), my girlfriend's father got the S5 also and would always put it on the charger with more than half battery and noticed his battery was dying very quickly. Now that he let's his phone die, he gets about the same amount of battery life as I do. Even though it's on Google, it's more about experience with it and I've dealt a lot with wasteful batteries. Plus batteries can always be very fussy, extremely fussy. Batteries can work well for you or they can be a huge pain in the a$$. They only like certain things xD haha I'm gunna have to test that theory again though hahaha But barryb36, the best advice is toy with the device and the power settings to get the battery life you're looking for.

no worries ...... just don't want you wearing out your battery mate , its quite well known now that the newer batteries react better to ''top up'' charges rather then full charge cycles from zero to 100

just don't worry about killing your battery by ''top up'' charges as its actually better for the longevity of the cells inside of lithium-ion based juice boxes ;-) have a nice evening mate ;-)

I usually charge mine overnight, then when I wake up (6am) I unplug it, and 99% of the time won't have to plug it in again until around 9 or 10pm.
I did however disable A LOT of Samsung and even Google apps I had no need for, which I found helped extend the battery (or it was just coincidence). I also don't have the GPS or bluetooth on.

I have talked about my method many times as to making the battery last for days between charges.

It depends on how much Screen Time you use each day.

If the screen is not used at all, you just left it on the shelf all day while out fishing.... my method will use about 8%-10% battery per day.

I use MacroDroid to turn OFF both WiFi and Data every time the screen is locked.

Then, when I need the phone and unlock the screen, MD will turn both WiFi and DATA back on.

it is quite easy to set up the macros to make it work like you want.

If you need assistance on a macro, PM me.

Like the previous poster said, I have also disabled every app that I have no use for.

Also, it depends on how you use the phone. just simple SMS stuff? easy on the battery.

Always watching YouTube or a Movie? Very Hard on a battery.

I have a good friend that only gets about 2 hours out of his iPhone because he does nothing but watch videos.

I think the battery is pretty good. Much better than my old iPhone 5 but then again the iPhone 5 was notorious for its poor battery.
