We can discuss it till the cows come home but it doesnt change anything just like it didn't for other brands that have gotten rid of LEDs. The trend in design is all screen phones with no bezels. To achieve that means removing things from the screen. That's just the way it is until the next evolution.
That's what they're working on actually according to several reports. The only reason I found that they didn't do that this year was because thr camera under the screen was still unable to take clear pics. What is up with this trend anyway? Judging from the S10, I won't be able to hold my phone in a year or two.
And unless they enable the notification ring on the camera, then they can go ahead and remove the hole punch blemish as far as I am concerned.
Again, it would have been easy to put an LED under the speaker grill. I couldn't care less about the notification LED and, it seems, unfortunately, that Samsung feels the same but I can empathize with those that like/miss it.
Some old phone I had a couple of years ago did it that way, I can't recall what it was though. It was a pin-hole LED but it was bright, easy to see, yet unubtrusive.Integration into the speaker sounds like a great idea.
What is the big deal with a full frontal display? I get having an amazing display, but sometimes it goes too far.
Agreed. I hate the cutouts in screens trend. Even the phones with the smallest cutouts look awful. It makes no sense to me to dump useful features at the top of the phone unless they go all the way and have a real full screen. As soon as they put something in the screen creating a notch or cutout or whatever, it ruins the screen. At the point just stretch the empty space across the whole phone and leave those other useful things in place.
The note series in particular should in my mind keep these sorts of extras. Let the S series be the trendy form over function phones and leave the note series as the refuge for those who want functionality.
Someone here scoffed at the loss of replaceable batteries and the IR blaster. I still miss those and found the replaceable battery far more useful than the totally pointless, I never use it waterproofing and nearly as pointless wireless charging which I find to be glitchy and almost never use.
They got rid of the useful ability to replace a battery because arrogant halfwits wanted "premium" materials which in most cases are covered by a case a
at which point the "premium" glass and "cheap" plastic are exactly the same. Now we're glued to a charger if using heavily instead of being able to swap a battery in 20 seconds and have a fully powered phone. Being stuck to a wall or a power pack or some thing is way more sleek and sophisticated than a plactic back on a phone that's covered by a case though.
No one scoffs at the idea of those features that are lost. It's just not realistic to hold on to them because they're gone. I was a fan of removable batteries but they're not coming back anytime soon and probably never. I hate glass backs but if I limit myself phones without a glass back what options does that leave me. The last phones I owned that had all of those features you mentioned are LG G5 and V20. I still have them and they both still work but I've moved on to newer tech.
My thing is that those features have been replaced with comparable alternatives. Still have batteries and glass backs aren't relevant when they are covered in a case.
AOD is not a solid alternative to the led notification light. The S10 improvements actually make them dumber phones than the Note 9
What features have been replaced with comparable alternatives?
It doesn't matter...the industry is moving forward and it's good for some while bad for othwrs. At some point you have make a choice to move forward to stay current or stick with old tech. I choose forward and lateral and I'm happy with my choices.
Or find a phone that fits your specific needs .I have to agree with you there, go forward or be stuck in the past .

I will have to move forward, even if my phone is dumber and less secure.
They are certainly moving in a direction, but I don't think that it is especially forward. Unfortunately, choice isn't really a factor anymore. If I want to remain current, my phone will just have to be dumber and less secure than before.
I don't see how it be more dumber or less secure ?
Don't you think if someone stays on Oreo it be dumber and less secure ?
I wasn't talking about the OS, but I would say that Oreo would definitely be less secure than Pie.
The S10 removes the iris scanner, which means that the S10 has one secure means of unlocking instead of two. Therefore, it is less secure.
The removal of the notification led makes prioritizing notifications considerably harder. The information that I am given is, in turn, diminished. Therefore, it is dumber.
And do I really have a choice? Who else makes phones with the quality of Samsung, supports Samsung Pay, but doesn't make the mistake that Samsung does?
