Is this phone worth buying in spite of the issues?

I'm now thinking the Thunderbolt might be my next phone but if this phone and the LTE network is buggy then is it really worth getting if the fixes are still delayed? I'd be tied to it for another two years. I seriously have until the 7th (tiered data plans) to figure this out. Apparently switching from a BlackBerry unlimited data plan to Android is considered a new plan and not grandfathered in. I'd have to deal with the tiered plans.

So in spite of the problems this phone has is it a good solid phone?

Also, if what you say is true about data, you only have till the 6th not the 7th. The 6th is the last day of unlimited data.

Root it, flash it, tweak it, and you will reduce the amount of issues the phone has.

If you like it then buy it, the reboot issue will be fixed soon and the LTE issues are a network issue (not specific to this phone: all 4G phones have the problems) and will also be resolved over time.

Short version: I am very happy with my Thunderbolt.

I have had a Thunderbolt since early this month. It is stock, unrooted, and came without any of the updates, and I have not had an update "push." I have had no random reboots. Only 4G issues have been the brief outage last week. GPS lock is usually fast, and I have one app I use that can clear and restart the aGPS if necessary (GPS Test). The build quality on mine is good.

4G speed is awesome (I had some interesting speed tests the other day - 6 down, 11 up, repeated once).

My only issue is battery life, but I spend most of my work day in a car, so the "Motorola Vehicle Power Adapter micro-USB Rapid Rate Charger" Amazon.com: Motorola Vehicle Power Adapter micro-USB Rapid Rate Charger: Cell Phones & Accessories ($5.04 @ Amazon) is my friend, and I am probably going for the extended battery as soon as I can order the Seidio case to fit it. I'm also almost certainly getting one of the New Trent external batteries (IMP880 or IMP1100) Amazon.com: New Trent iCruiser IMP1000 11000mAh External Battery Pack and Charger for iPad 2, ipad, iPhone 4 4G 3Gs 3G (AT&T and verizon) , iPod Touch (1G 2G 3G 4G), HTC Android EVO, Blackberry, Kindle DX, Samsung Galaxy S, Droid, Nintendo, Sony PSP for those times when AC or car DC is not convenient or available.

Completely stock with no issues , I spend my day behind a desk so battery life is not a issue for me. This is my first data phone and I love it.

Yes, it is awesome. Get the extended HTC battery and you'll be good to go. Super fast on 4g!

I am very happy with the TB.

I switched from the DroidX and difference is night and day. The Thunderbolt is fast and responsive. I have yet to root it, but left on its stock settings I have had no issues. (and 4g is simply wonderful) Battery life is still and issue but I have a charger at work, home, and in the car so I get by.

I have had experience with the Inc, Droid Pro, and the D2 and I can say that the TB was the right choice. Dont even think about the charge.

(come to think of it, why do we all hate the charge!?)

Had mine since launch and for the most part I am very happy with it. The reboots are getting annoying, but hopefully a fix will be here soon. Also sounds like Gingerbread is right around the corner. Stock battery life sucks. I couldn't get through a 10 hour day of mild use. Since I got the extended battery, I am good for a day and a half of use before charging.

I came from Blackberry and bought this phone on day one. Not all of the phones have the rebooting issue - mine doesn't.

But if you are a long time BB user, get ready for changes. Droid is a different animal and takes some adjustments on your part, too many for me to list them here.

I had a Storm1 for two and a half years and got tired of waiting for the Storm3/4. As it turned out, jumping ship from R.I.M. was a good move, R.I.M. probably isn't going to have a phone I want for at least another two years anyway.

I don't think the LTE network is buggy, it was down once for a day in my area. But to be honest, I use WiFi more than 4G. The 4G is really good compared to BB's 3G, I almost never used the internet on my Storm because it was impossibly slow. On the TB I use the internet all the time because I can actually surf the net with good speed and actually read it on the big 4.3" screen.

Bottom line, if you need to get a new phone by the 6th to keep your data plan, the TB will be OK. It's not the super phone the fanboys swoon over, so don't get your hopes up too high.

And remember, new phones are coming out every year - you aren't going to be stuck with any phone for life.

Yes it is worth buying. I used BB Storm and BB Bold 9650 previously. The TBolt is way more responsive and reboots faster. The voice and data at the same time without having to use Wi-Fi. 3G or LTE. I'm glad I jumped in May.

Just got mine last night. so far so good - still installing apps. . . not sure if I'll root & ROM or not.

Everything works great and it's fast.

Much better than the BB Tour it replaced!
