Is TMobile's $30 4G plan gone?

The #$30 plan still exists (two of them, actually), but the T-Mobile website seems designed to hide it--they're really pushing their new $50-$60-$70 plans. I had to dig around quite a bit before I could find this page: Prepaid Cell Phone Plans, No Annual Contract | Monthly 4G | T-Mobile

The two $30 plan variants are explained at the bottom of this page (but note that you have to scroll all the way down to find them, and they're in tiny B&W print rather than the large, bold pink text used for the other plans).

I had an existing pre-paid plan on an ancient clamshell, so I went to a T-Mobile store to activate my new Nexus 4 (bought from Google for $299--T-Mobile wants $477.99 for the same thing) and make sure I could keep my existing number. They told me they could give me the $30 plan with 1500 talk and text but only 30MB data, but I wanted the OTHER $30 plan--only 100 minutes, but unlimited text and data. THAT plan, they said, can't be done in store. I called the T-Mobile customer service number (877-453-1304) and got the right plan with no trouble at all.

This is a great option if you don't need the minutes but want unlimited text and data. They try to hide it, but it's still available.

@ Augmented Me (sounds like a musician?) :) Thanks for those valuable tips. We just started and our plan is $100/mo. for 2 phones. We could have got it for $80 without adding $ for the 2gb option. Your plan sounds like a great deal! We don't really make many calls or talk long when we do, but use the web alot to surf. I'll have to look into this. I'm diminished. :) Aren't all trumpet players?

You just joined TMobile? If so you can easily change to this plan and save $40 a month.

It's cool. You don't even have to get wal mart involved. Don't even gotta go to TMobile store!

1. Get your phone
2. Get a $10 sim card activation kit from tmobile: T-Mobile SIM Card Activation Kit | T-Mobile
3. Wait. Go outside and play. Fall in love.
4. Receive activation kit, and go activate at https://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/activatecodes.aspx
4a. If you already have a tmobile number you'd like to port, now is not the time to do this. Do not try to port when activating your new sim. You will get an error.
5. Go ahead and pick the $30 dream plan
6. When the plan is activated, they told me to wait at least 2 hours to call cust support to port that TMobile number. You've gotta be very careful how you word this to them.

When porting, I dealt with 3 agents on the phone, looking for someone with enough experience to understand my situation. They do not do this over chat support. On my third agent, I got her to understand I wanted to port my original number to my new account. I want my original number on the new $30 plan. Once this number goes to that plan, I want to close the original account. Don't let them pull the trigger on this until you are 100% confident that you and the agent are perfectly clear with each other. While on the phone they will say "ok now we're deactivating," and the call will drop.

Don't freak. Just put your new sim into the phone, and there will be a nice voicemail from the agent explaining what just happened. It's pretty cool, and you feel like you already have friends that wanna talk to you.

Wait up to 24-48 hours and there you have it. Old phone number, on your sweet, sweet data focused plan.

[edit] If you end up speaking with customer care while activating, don't bother mentioning your original Tmobile phone number. They will activate this new SIM in place of your old one, which accomplishes absolutely nothing. Just activate as a new account and just forget about porting for now.

Hi~ Did you have a contract wit T-Mobile before you switched to the $30 prepaid plan? If you switched your old T-Mobile number to the new prepaid plan successfully, could you please tell me exactly how to? Thank you so much!

See my entry on how to do this. Don't try to port the number on the sim activation screen. It won't work. You do that after you've set up a new, separate account. And it must be done over the phone.

I ported my number and it worked perfectly though the website activation. I should also add that I have two T-Mobile accounts. This is why I appear to say different things that I did in different posts that may sound confusing in this thread.

but I'm a lil bit freak cause how do I tell them if I want to use my nexus 4 and want to use the $30 4g 5gb and 100 minutes ? let's say if I got the actication kit and the sim card that I've ordered from tmobile, can I just put inside the phone and activate them through tmobile online site and also pick the $30 plan include 4g speed with 5gb caps ?

cause I'm tired dealing with those Walmart tmobile guy they tried to B.S me and they force me to buy the phone if I want to use the $30 include 100minutes , unlimited text and 5gb 4g speed .

are they gonna reject their service to me which is the $30 include 100minutes , unlimited text and 5gb 4g speed if they know I'm using Nexus 4 ? (sorry if this question a lil bit retarded )

All you need to do is go online to create a new account. It will ask for the SIM card # and the IMEI # from the phone. It's easy to do. Try it.

I like how sites like CNET, BGR, and Gizmodo are discovering this plan right now.

Can anyone who is in a DC-HSPA+ (42mbps) market with the Nexus 4 list their speedtest results? I am currently on LTE with AT&T in Sacramento and I usually get 50-55mpbs down and 20-25mbps up, with around 40ms latency (LG Escape is my current phone). I want to see how DC-HSPA+ compares on Tmo. I get a employee discount so I pay around $50 for unlimited grandfathered LTE data, but could save some cash on Tmo with the $30 plan. I rarely use my phone for calls :) Thanks!!

Also in Sac Metro. Get between 5-15 down depending on location. Can run some speed tests when out and about this weekend and post. Plenty fast for me considering the cost of the plan. So far fairly happy, but there is less coverage for sure when switching from AT&T.

How do I get the $30 dollar plan, I can never find it on their site. What sim card do I need.. micro? When I get the sim card does it have directions telling you where to go to activate it online, if not where do I go to activate it online, I can't find it on the site. What exactly do I have to do to get this plan?

Scroll down and you'll see the plan.
