Yes...my device exhibits this as well, although in reverse. Dirtier and more yellow in the center and cooler and more white at the bottom.
I expected much better from this screen. Both my Moto X Pure and my new 5X are far better, i.e., much more uniform in color temperature.
The viewing angles (as you mentioned) are also much more sensitive than my LCD screens. Perhaps AMOLED just isn't for me.
I will most likely be requesting an exchange...or perhaps just return it if the viewing angles are this sensitive.
More please! This is a serious serious concern that I think a lot of people are sleeping on. I don't care to take the reviews into account when there needs to be real world usage from real consumers to see how that screen is really holding up.
I doubt it's anywhere near as good as my S6, but that's to be expected. Amoled just scares me if its not on a Samsung phone, even with this 6p having a Samsung made Amoled screen I doubt it's their best. This brings back flashbacks to my HTC incredible and not being able to see anything when standing outside and I hate when the colors, especially the whites aren't the same throgh out the entire screen, the dirty edges or middle drive me nuts.
if mine ever gets here and it's just the way you've explained it, I will just switch to a white 5x, honestly that phone is growing on me every time I see a pic or video of it.
I also own a 5X and it is an amazing phone...the perfect size/weight and runs Marshmallow like a dream.
As far as the 6P is concerned perhaps others are more used to the limited AMOLED viewing angles as all of my other phones are LCD (MXPE, iPhone 6S, Nexus 5 and Nexus 5X). Some people may be more sensitive to color variations across the panel or perhaps I just got a bad one, but so far, as I said, I am unimpressed.
The screen has a distinct yellow zone in the center, the top I would call neutral and the bottom 1" or so is very clean, bright...leaning toward a blueish white. It looks terrible compared to my MXPE which is the most uniform and neutral screen I have ever owned.
The 5X (and the 5 for that matter) leans toward a warmer color value, but it is very uniform and easy on the eyes. The 5X also has much better outdoor visibility in direct sunlight than my 6P.
It has really dampened my enthusiasm for the 6P...
Glad I am not the only one...
I think our "obsession with perfection" can be attributed as a mental illness almost that literally ruins experiences while other people are getting maximum enjoyment out of the same situation.
NOT ONE REVIEW mentioned anything about this issue. In fact, at the AMA, google engineers assured us that this is a very high quality display.
I must say that the 6P display is superior to absolute junk that came with Moto Nexus 6. The color temp change on that one gave me headaches. Not to mention, at low brightness, black/dark colors became PURPLE. 6P is better but the temp shifting and uneven temp issue is still there.
Even the best samsung panels (on S6, S6 Edge) suffer from the same issue. I went to Best Buy and checked out all the top Samsung phones and realized they all have the same issues but a little less noticeable. The BEST screens (for color reproduction) I have even seen usually are on iPhones.
I can't say enough good things about the Nexus 5 screen - it is simply phenomenal. Although, after using Nexus 6 and now 6P for a little bit, the colors on the Nexus 5 looks dull (same as sRGB on 6P).
I think I am changing my outlook on things in real life to more enjoying than complaining. I decided to keep the 6P and I don't think a replacement 6P will fix things. Unfortunately for me, Nexus 6P gives me the best combination of "features" that are important to me. I know I will never go back to "not noticing" the flaw - my approach is going to be this: "yeah it's there, but there are bigger concerns in life".
I just don't find the 5X as attractive as the 6P, or even a Nexus 5. The thick bezel top and bottom kills it for me. Not to mention, the phone is HUGE given it only has 5.2" screen.
