January OTA Security Update Now Available!

So, after installing the update yesterday I turned on all the stuff I previously turned off in order to help with the unsatisfactory battery life I had been experiencing (5G, WiFi and Bluetooth Scanning and Smooth Display) and so far I like what I'm getting. Wondering if things will get even better after this update has a few days to settle ...

My update keeps failing for me. Getting the below message and when I reset the update never loads. Is anyone else having the same issue and are there any fixes?Screenshot_20220115-173421.jpg

It's probably as good as optical can be.

It's not. It's still very slow, even when compared to other optical fingerprint scanners. Here's a video of MKBHD using an optical fingerprint scanner in a different phone:

https://youtu.be/0Jc5Ryk2mCw

Skip to 4:03. Marques shows the fingerprint scanner, taps it a few times to show the optical light flashing, then he unlocks it a couple of times.

That is much faster than I've ever gotten the Pixel 6 to unlock. So there's definitely something wrong with how Google have implemented their optical fingerprint scanner. It's shouldn't be as slow as it is. And as I've mentioned before, it's unlocks speeds are inconsistent and struggles when you're outside in bright light, especially if the sun is shinning on the phone.

Got the Jan update and everything is working great especially the fingerprint sensor! I got it via OTA.

I'm getting the screen turning completely black when it's on the Pixel Stand 2. Usually it shows the time, date, notifcations, battery % etc, but now the screen doesn't show anything. Is there a way to change what is displayed when on the wireless charger?

The stand should appear in Settings > Connected Devices with a gear icon for options. Worse case, select Forget Device and set it up as new and turn on the features you like.

Mines seems worse with the January update.

Ah yep, thanks! For some reason the 'Screen off when dark setting' was turned on. I definitely didn't change it before, so not sure why it was turned on. Turned that setting off and now I have the AOD on when on the wireless charger. Cheers.

That's no good. Mine is a little better, but I went from the November update to January. So its better than the November patch for me, but still way behind other in-screen fingerprint scanners I've used. It's just slow, inconsistent in it's unlock speeds and is poor in sunlight. Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is better in every way.

I agree. It's starting to get annoying. It's causing me to exceed login attempts in multiple apps.

Here's my FPS I don't know what y'all doing

That's not very fast. This is the sort of speed other fingerprint scanners get:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22P_Ta78tvo

Tapping the sensor as you would opening an app will unlock it. Pixel 6 will never unlock the phone with taps that fast. If you try tapping the sensor like in the above videos you'll get the 'hold a little longer' message.

Pixel 6 fingerprint sensor is always a press and hold. And the hold part can be quite long sometimes.

I'm not saying it's awful, it's just slow & inconsistent for a late 2021 phone.

It's fast enough for me ..I use a work app along with others and it's spot on 99% ..just place my finger go ..might not be faster than others but I don't need it to be ..I have this phone ...

That's also the way my fingerprint sensor works, totally reliable. I too wonder what these other guys are doing.
I think there's a KFC conspiracy going on around here. There's some greasy finger people on our forums. Lmfao

Yeah fair enough. If you like it then that's all that matters.

I've just come from a Galaxy S21 phone, so my frame of reference for in-screen fingerprint scanners is the speed of the scanner per the videos above, so I'm used something that was much faster and consistent.
