January OTA Security Update Now Available!

Well, i am sure the fingerprint scanner taking an extra half a second is a life altering, universe destroying, biblical catastrophe. I mean, wow. The Gods are enacting their wrath on us now, I am sure a comet is headed this way to destroy the planet, and the only way to deflect it is to have the Google Pixel 6/pro unlock the phone a half second faster. We are doomed!

Ha …I do get it with many they are having issues not so much with speed but reliability..so I do see the frustration and I can see the complaints…so on that part I give my support for those having issues …I would have liked to have the Face ID as secondary ..that would help tremendously IMO …

Well I’m not looking at it as any of us making excuses for Google .. I’m certainly not ..we just trying to show that not all of us are having issues with the FPS and it’s not a big deal to us that .5 second difference..everyone has their own experiences that goes with any phone or manufacturer…

Anyway enough with FPS let’s talk January updates people ..any new bugs or squashed things y’all seeing ?

Actually, on a serious note about the fingerprint sensor, I've noticed that after the January update it now works with the screen off where before I had to wake the screen, which I genuinely found INCREDIBLY irritating.

It definitely works better with the screen off now they definitely tweaked it …how’s the update for you any improvements? I only have one issue I can’t resolve…
I’ve had it since I got the phone. So I have a extender in the basement and it’s hardwire into my FiOS from the cable coming in to my TV ..so when I return home it grabs the lower signal upstairs instead of my extender ..not always ..but enough to annoy me lol ..I have to toggle WiFi off to see it grab the good signal …no other phone does it …

Interesting. It has always worked with the screen off for me. It's absolutely fascinating how everyone's experience with this phone is different - there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the bugs; they just exist in all their variety.

So I've stayed away from this phone for a myriad of reasons but mainly about all the horrendous stuff I've been reading. This update was basically going to determine if I get it or not.

Those who were having issues, have they been resolved? Mainly poor reception, calling 911, Bluetooth connection, etc? I don't really care about anyone's battery gripes. I've learned long ago that you could have a battery that lasts a week and people will still ***** about it lol. Just making sure I made that note.

Appreciate the responses. Really want to ditch this S20 FE

I was on December patch didn't experience any of the issue with connectivity , fingerprint etc but im one the rare ones that dont have many issues on devices so i think the pixel 6 is a great device but see what others have to say with new update.you have 14 days to try it out so might want to go that route.

14 days? They have a trial period if you purchase directly from Google?

I've had great luck with my previous two Pixels although my 3XL started to crap out on me and I didn't like the 5 which is why I got the phone I have now and it was basically free so that helps lol

My daily use experience has been great. Have I come across some minor issues, yup...does it make this phone a POS, nope. I was a pre-order early adopter...since I've had this phone, I've had one or two UI glitches, one signal drop (I chalked that up to AT&T messing with the network, the AOD issue where it would glitch when I had animations scaled to .5 (developers option). Side loaded the December patch and it fixed those issues. Sideloaded the January patch and MY phone works just fine. Am I capping for El Googs, not at all, (other phone is an S21U that I'll switch to occasionally).
If you want the P6/Pro, give it a try...you can always return it and keep it moving.

I just didn't like that they barely improved upon the 4 and it just seemed like a stale upgrade to me. I really want to get back into the Pixel family and since you've (and another poster) made me aware of the return policy, I'll probably scoop it. Like I said, I've had good luck and never really had problems with my previous Pixels so hopefully this remains constant lol. Thanks again

I don't want to derail this thread, but could you briefly tell what the problems are with your S20 FE?

(I searched your posts back to Dec. 2019 and didn't see anything related to the S20 FE.)

I've had zero issue with the P6P FPS. It is just as fast and reliable as the rear one I had on the Pixel 3XL, and I like it better....because as others have said, when it is on my desk I don't have to pick it up to use it!

The touchscreen is crap. You can Google the issues everyone has with it. My keyboard randomly crashes if being used in landscape mode. I hate Samsung's annoying random popups depending on what app I'm using. I hope it's a Samsung thing and not an Android 12 thing but when I reach the end of the page, the stretchy, motion blob animation messes with me and I don't have motion sickness lol. That's a few bc, like you said, not really trying to derail this. I also usually just stick to Google threads, you're right. Guess I've never really noticed. I just really look forward to Pixel devices

Since the update, the FPS appears to be on par with my S20 FE, which I actually sold after seeing the first P6P leaks, wanting to maximize resale. Prior to the upgrade, there was a noticeable difference with FPS reliability. I agree it's still not the fastest performing (seems to be the ever so slightest split second delay), but its pretty negligible.

The auto-rotation issue was likely my biggest complaint. So annoying to have to fight with that trying to watch YouTube. That seems to be resolved now.

I'm good with the speed of the FPS on this S20FE so that's good news.

Very glad other issues are seemingly resolved with this update. Thanks for the update

I keep reading this is a SOFTWARE issue. Last time I had so many issues with a flagship, it was with Samsung's Galaxy S4. It was so bad I sold it in two weeks.

How many upgrades from Google will it take to fix these bugs. I get it, not every launch is perfect but this is sad and they wonder why they're DISSING the Pixel phones.

OK, so now, sometimes with the phone locked (on the black screen w/clock, not the lock screen background image), sometimes the FPS unlocks the phone, and sometimes it's unresponsive, and I need to tap the screen first to get the lock screen image to show, then the FPS will unlock the phone. Anyone else w/this issue?

fyi - It stopped working correctly after a reboot.

Edit - after entering my Pin again, it started working as expected, again. Still, kinda discouraging to still experience this at all after the update.

Edit 2 - When is the S22 coming out?

Entering your PIN is always required after a reboot. This is for security purposes.
