Just ordered HTC One Google Edition

Didn't LG say they were going to skip the Nexus 5?

They essentially said the opposite. They said that they would continue their collaboration with Google or something like that, which seems like a pretty big hint to me.

Being eligible get upgrade pricing since May, the HTC One and S4 was on the top of my upgrade list but now I am waiting...
Have had the N4 since November and I think I can wait a few more months to see what's coming and excited with some of the rumors...

Sony Honami with snapdragon 800, 20 megapixel camera and 4k video recording? If true that will then be on the top of my list.
The 800 sounds like a monster performer over the S4 and One and thinking the camera may be best in class if by Sony as well as LCD screen.
LG G2 with again the rumored snapdragon 800 and 3gb of ram... the One and S4 will pretty be behind the numbers curve in a few months.

I won't mind renewing my contract with AT&T and stick with the phone for two years if any of those phones live up to the rumors.

Also by then get an idea of the next Nexus phone... if it also has the 800 and 3gb and hopefully LTE with KLP and less than $400,
then i'll stick with the Nexus line for another year.

Yes, more expensive, but worth it to hopefully have a phone without so many bugs and with better build quality.

Bugs? Exactly what bugs are you getting? Has been flawless for me so far. I thought I'd miss LTE but I don't. At all. HSPA+ is just an inch away from being on par with Verizon. Plus, I don't have to worry about battery drain. Don't regret leaving Verizon at all.

Bluetooth doesn't turn on unless I reboot the phone. Data connection drops out and reqs a reboot at least once a day. Painstakingly slow speeds on ATT. Phone overheating. The list goes on.

As for battery, modern LTE chips draw about as much battery as 3G chips.

Yeah. And guess what? You either have a defective model or are lying.

So hardcore with my phone that it broke the Bluetooth. P.S.Google doesn't do warranty replacements for user fault.

If you are having Bluetooth problems, that is an Android 4.2.2 problem that is occuring on other phones with the latest Android version. You could swap your phone 3,266 times, and as long as it has 4.2.2 you will probably have BT problems. Hopefully will be fixed with next version of Android.

Considering it was happening on 4.2.1, its unlikely its a 4.2.2 problem.

I can't see Google waiting on HTC, Samsung, and any other OEM before releasing software updates. The point of Nexus devices is to get the updates when they're ready. Google can't be held back by the OEMs. Samsung has stopped pushing out updates for the Galaxy Nexus, at least here in Canada. It's stuck on 4.1.1. I love these Nexus experience devices, but I don't have much confidence in the OEMs to keep them updated to the same degree as pure Nexus devices.

Planning on rooting. Haven't found any guidance or directions for rooting the GE on a Mac. Also what's the tweak you mentioned RE the black bar called. Any help on those 2 points is appreciated.

THIS.
I have zero issues on my Nexus or the other 2 in my household. You must have a defective model. And as far as reception goes, that is clearly a problem with AT&T. Not the phone.

I don't care what anyone says as far as LTE not draining batteries. Its been proven that they are battery hogs.
I've had noting but LTE devices and the Nexus 4 blows them out of the water. Hands down.

Or a hardware problem...

This happens on my GNex as well. Its software related.

You're kinda alone on that. Doesn't happen on any of the 5 Nexus 4s people I know own.

Blame AT&T for that. Doesn't happen on my N4.

Phone overheating.
Ugh I'm so tired of this argument. All phones these days get warm; that's a result of powerful modern processing. All phones I've used (which include the One, GS4, etc) get as hot.

Weird. Two opposing statements from two LG execs?

Do you have a quote from the executive who said that LG was going to make the Nexus 5? I am really hoping that LG does make another Nexus, even if it's just a revision to the Nexus 4.

Well I am using about 6GBs of my 16GBs on my N4, and my T Mobile HSPA+ which can work up to 21Mb/s is fast enough for me, and does not drain the battery as quickly as LTE I am told. So that is not even worth $25 to me much less $250.

Would you buy a Nexus 5 that had $250-worth of extra features? What features would interest you to spend the money?

As for the HTC One GPe, it's shipping now, so it'll end up in people's hands maybe as early as tomorrow. We should be getting reports from customers on the battery life on LTE relatively soon.

The One GE is better on paper, but when you actually use it, there are inconsistencies caused by the phone not being made for stock; for example, uncomfortable navigation and a terrible camera.

That's a good article. I like how JR Raphael characterizes the Google Play edition phones as "hastily assembled experiments" because that's what they really are: experiments in stock Android. Since the HTC One wasn't even mentioned during Google I/O, I think this was all a last-minute thing that Google cobbled together with their top hardware partners.

Do you think if Google, HTC, and Samsung put more effort, they can overcome the inconsistencies you mention? Maybe over time they'll put enough software fixes to make the experience much better.

And we all know what can absolutely count on what the tech support rep tells us.....[BOX]:p[/BOX]

Does Google have a reputation for bad tech support, especially for devices? What was your personal experience like?

I'm confused how everyone knows all these things that are contrary to GP support reps...do you guys have someone on the inside or something that knows more than google itself?

I would be curious about this, too. It's certainly possible that the Google Play edition phones may get delayed updates, but how do we know that for sure at this point in time? Aren't the phones just starting to ship today? There seems to be a lot that is left to be determined at a later date.

Maybe for a minor update, but no way are they gonna have Key Lime Pie ready in a couple of weeks. Remember, apart from updating the software, they will have to test. At the time the GE manufacturers are handed the build, all building and testing is done for the Nexus.

In theory, could the development and testing for the Nexus and Google Play edition phones be done in parallel so everything is finished at the same time?

It would be difficult, of course. I'm guessing that the Android team is used to working on updates for at least 4 distinct devices at the same time: the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 4, the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10. Adding 2 more devices will make the juggling act that much harder. Still, is it impossible for companies with the vast resources of Google, Asus, HTC, and Samsung to do it?

I'll pass. Maybe next year for a GE phone. Let them work out the kinks first. Sounds to good to be true.

You are taking the sensible approach. The Google Play edition phones are definitely not for everyone. For anyone even considering the purchase of one of these phones, they should wait until more people get their hands on them and report their experiences.

You're kinda alone on that. Doesn't happen on any of the 5 Nexus 4s people I know own.

I see your 5 and raise you approximately 30 users with Bluetooth problems on their Nexus 4. The last post was on July 7th at the time that I accessed the Help Forum.

I've had noting but LTE devices and the Nexus 4 blows them out of the water. Hands down.

Which LTE devices did you own? How bad was the battery life?
