Telling people to uninstall system apps is why there are tons of people wondering why they arent able to get OTA updates EVERY SINGLE UPDATE. Titanium Backup PREMIUM does let you freeze apps though, as does my app, bloat freezer, that was previously mentioned.

You won't be able to do OTA's after you root. You will have to wait for the root versions of those OTA updates.

What? You can get EVERY OTA update after you root, I have gotten the last 2 on my EVO. Some updates may take away your root but if you DONT DELETE SYSTEM APPS you will always be able to update and then just re-root your phone after the update. Or if you rooted with Unrevoked you will never loose root because you can just flash su and superuser.apk if an OTA update ever kills your root.

Please know what you are talking about before you start giving advice.

So I just rooted using the instructions from XDA and it worked great. I have one problem/question though. When I try to do a nandroid backup, it allows you to check different things (system, data, cache, recovery, wimax, sd-ext, .android_secure). I read that you should select all of them. However, I always get an error message that says "Oops... something went wrong! Please check the recovery log!" Anyone know what I am doing wrong? Where is the recovery log?

When I just left the defaults (system, data, cache) it worked, but as I understand it, that isn't a full backup.

What? You can get EVERY OTA update after you root, I have gotten the last 2 on my EVO. Well OBVIOUSLY if you are flashing ROMs you wont get an OTA update for the stock Rom, but if you root the STOCK rom and DONT delete or uninstall the bloat, you will be able to get OTA updates EXACTLY as if you had not rooted your phone.

Rooting only does 2 things, adds the su binary to /system/bin or /system/xbin and installs the superuser.apk, just this DOES NOT affect your getting OTA updates, deleting bloat DOES.

What is the point in rooting a phone and literally doing nothing to it? If you are not going to delete the bloatware or do anything to your phone in anyway then why root? Most people are going to do SOMETHING to their phone. Meaning they shouldn't do the OTA updates.

Uhhhh FREEZE the bloatware instead of deleting, then its gone, and then use root apps like wireless tether and others, and then when they come out, defrost your bloatware, get your OTA updates and then re-freeze the bloat + any new bloat that came with the OTA (Like Blockbuster and NOVA in the last EVO OTA)

Basically the ONLY THING you can't do and still get OTA updates is DELETE bloatware so what is your point?

Totally agree.. I was rooted and stayed stock for several months just for wireless hotspot and freezing bloat. I didn't install my first Rom until after about 6 months.

Out of curiosity, how did you root and stay stock? I followed this guide which installed the sprint lovers rom. I like this rom, but really all I wanted was root access to remove bloatware, use SetCPU and free wireless hotspot, so I might wipe everything back to stock and re-root without a rom if you can tell me how you did it.

Any root method should root you without forcing you to change ROMs. I used Unrevoked. To get back to stock now you would need to a stock ROM for your phone and then root your phone via some method, I recommend Unrevoked, pretty much one click after you hook your phone up to your PC.

From 3.29 to 3.30 it was not possible to update after rooting, evem with zero changes to /system.

Its great that you came in here to help other people out. However, flaming other people doing the same makes you appear infantile.

I wouldn't use unrevoked. I used it and it was successul..... Everything was fine for about a week. Then I flashed a ROM and nothing ran right. So I flashed a different ROM. Made it even worse. And yes for those of you who will ask, I did wipe before I flashed. It was a week of not being able to use my phone and fixing it. I ended up having to unroot and then root the old fashioned way.
