Kids that have iPads / iPhones etc.

I am OCD about spelling and grammar, and I worry about that aspect. My one 'child' is 29, lol.
Also handwriting skills, and the joy of settling in to a great book and bookmarking it (real bookmarks).
I am sure with the right guidance kids can do all of these and use devices.
Once a nerd alway a nerd, right. :)

Troubling discussion on the radio today, relating to older kids, teens, twenties is they base their social value and worth on their online status. In this case, many were videoing the aftermath of a (rare) mother and daughter (16) suicide on the London Underground / Subway and uploading them. Very disturbing for me.

A little off topic but I don't want kids to lose compassion and think everything is an unreal video game.

On Edit: I said I was OCD about grammar, I didn't say I was good at it.

I think the main issue with that is that we think it's not fair. Kids can easily waste time watching tv, playing x-box etc. but somehow expensive phones and kids switch a trigger.

I'm no father myself, but I took it upon me to introduce the kids of my brother (6 and 9 years old) to the technology that is all around us these days. That said, I would never buy a kid such a device before the youngling is at least ten years old. I was 12 when I got my C64 back in the days and I think 10-12 is a good range for kids to be responsible enough (given good education) to own a computer device

I don't like the idea to expose our children to many eletronics too soon. TV, computers, cellphones, tablets. Theses things keep our children locked inside our house. They have to spend all the energy they have!

The truth is that these all gadgets are becoming more and more integrated into our lives and you cannot stop kids from using them so sooner or later kids will be exposed, but it is possible to make sure that these phones and tablets are being used for educational purposes. For example, there are many games that teach kids new languages or they can watch educational cartoons or explore the world so in my opinion it is ok for kids. That said I do not think that kids should have their own devices at such a young age, you can share devices at home and so on.

I have witnessed little kids playing around with iPads and iPhones. For me I believe that its not about the money that the parents spend on the devices but what would happen to the children when they get used to these things at such a young age. Internet is completely not safe for children below 10.

Mothers usually do this to keep the children occupied when they carry on with their work.
