Sprint,

The laptop dock IS NOT A LAPTOP. It is worth about $150, no more than that. And using the laptop dock IS NOT TETHERING. Please don't screw this up. Charge nothing extra or $10 max for an unlimited laptop dock plan. No one wants to pay $30/mo for this thing.

Thank you,

Concerned Customer

(I'm assuming it can even use the laptop dock since I haven't seen it mentioned)

the photon will not have the webtop dock that we've seen for the atrix and the like. instead, there will be a multimedia hdmi dock you can get that essentially performs the same function as the webtop; you just have to have the other accessories (keyboard, mouse, monitor/hdtv).

how could it not? Did they just not announce it or have they confirmed that it will not be available? I figure ATT has some sort of exclusivity period with it but the Photon would get it. Pity

The components in it alone are worth more than $150.

A fully function netbook with windows 7 installed can be down to $200. Can't see paying more for a screen, battery, mouse, and keyboard that is useless without the phone connected.

I agree the cost of it is to much. I would pay 300 for both. I don't think that you will be able to use the one that outs now though. The Atrix is 4 inches and this is 4.3 also the port connections won't line up.. So unless they can make a adapter to allow it to use the laptop dock , they would have to make a totally new one which will make its cost over the $150. The multimedia dock they have for it is cool and all but not mobile.

The phone is still a awesome phone and worth checking out.

I really hope the laptop dock is an option. The Global feature of this phone is a HUGE plus. If the laptop dock is an option (at any reasonable price) this will be a phone I'd trade one of my kids for.

^ lol Damn poor kid.

But your post make me think that it would be stupid for Sprint/Motorola not to eventually make a laptop dock for the Photon since it is geared to business folks and world travelers, who usually bring a laptop with them. I rather have a light weight laptop dock than carrying around a heavy one i currently use.

When was the atrix released? Around march maybe? I'd bet 6 months later, the photon, DX2, and most moto phones will have laptop docks. Probably have a contract with ATT preventing release on another carrier. Or they have one with verizon for the coming bionic.

I'd only get the dock if it was Android powered. A custom Linux distro.... You already know support will be limited on the device.

I've been informed by a few sources, that the photon will in fact have a laptop dock very similar to the attrix. Also I've been told you will be able to get a bundle package from specific retailers. Meaning you'll get the laptop dock and phone together for a set amount. The photon will also be sold separately with the option of buying the laptop dock down the road if you can't afford the bundle.

The HD Multimedia Dock is very similar to the laptop dock. They all provide the same function. Except that the HD Dock is more of a desktop replacement.

For others, here's an extremely good link that explains both docks:
Motorola Atrix 4G Lapdock and HD Multimedia Dock Review

I'm still trying to wrap myself around the idea of the laptop dock.... Essentially it's great if you want to access low-graphic web sites and watch non-streaming movies. I just can't see too many business scenarios where the laptop dock purchase is a smart business choice.

I've tried the Atrix and dock. It's great for light surfing on the go with a bigger screen and keyboard typing to work with. But it is NOT a laptop replacement. So Sprint needs to be careful how they price it. It's just not worth what ATT charges for the dock or the monthly cost to use it.

The next generation of phone and dock combo will probably be closer to replacing a laptop, but it's just not there yet.

The Photon user guide refers to both the HD station and the lapdock, so I'm sure it will be available eventually.

Webtop Application
Connect the Webtop Application
The webtop application lets you browse, or use Web
apps, on a large screen in a full Firefox browser. Create
and share documents, spreadsheets, and
presentations, with online tools like Google Docs.
1. Connect your phone to a TV or computer monitor
with an HDMI cable or the HD Station.
– or –
Connect your phone to the Lapdock.
2. Choose webtop.
When you’re done using the webtop application, just
disconnect your phone from the cable or dock.

Can HD dock have any monitor connectors *other than* HDMI? What if i wanted to hook it up to a regular VGA?

thats the only display plug for it and hdmi to vga is possible with another box that costs just as much

The lapdock is the one accessory I was looking forward to for this phone. When I'm out & about, I couldn't imagine dragging a bunch of additional accessories when one would do.

An HDMI to VGA adapter isn't cheap, but you can get an HDMI to DVI adapter for about $3 at monoprice or amazon.

I just bought the HD dock. When I was in the Sprint store, I asked the rep about the laptop dock; his answer was troubling: there won't be a laptop dock like the one with Atrix only HD dock for home.

I don't usually believe the sales rep but if this is true, I am not sure if it worth getting the Photon 4G

Does the Atrix laptop dock have a battery? I ask, because we have something of an analog in terms of pricing in the keyboard dock for the Asus Transformer, which does have a full-size battery but doesn't have a screen. And that's selling well at $150. So, I'd assume that the laptop dock WITH a screen should warrant something of a premium over the Asus dock, with or without its own battery.
