i just can't deal with their customer service anymore. i know i shouldn't expect much because of the price i paid, but their customer service is just horrible. i have been throttle every single month. first month, i was using about 100 meg a day, and they throttle me the last week of the month. when the second month started, my speed was reset, but only for one day, i used about 55 meg. called ST and waited over 2 hours and finally reset my speed. current month, speed was good for about a week. i used even less data, only about 25 meg a day. they still throttle me! the worst part is that since yesterday afternoon, i have no mobile data at all. call and text still works, just no data. called ST last night waited for over 1 hr and a half, and they can't solve the issue. the rep said everything is ok on their side and it could be either my phone, the sim, or the network is too congested. wanted me to wait 24 hours and see if i am still without data. as of right now, i still don't have data. this is getting too frustrauted to deal with. the 2 worst thing about ST is the speed throttling, and next to impossible to talk to a live person when there is an issue. i know that this doesn't happen to everyone and there are plenty of you who have had no issue at all, but the fact that it's so hard to get help when there is one have made me decided to change service once my prepaid plan is up. my only regret is that i paid 3 months up front and have to wait till april to switch. i understand that this doesn't happen to everyone, i am just telling you guys my own experience. so for anyone else who is deciding to switch to straighttalk, you might want to consider how important is customer service for you.

What are you going to switch to? Solavei? T-Mo?

t mo won't work for me, service is too spotty. going to be on my girlfriend's att family plan. going to pay her 35 a month. does anyone know if i can get onto her plan without signing a 2 yr contract?

What are your APN settings? Curious if these have any effect on throttling

it was at the settings that came with the sim card. i didn't have proxy set since i wanted to use speed tester. they had me added proxy back into it. then they had me changed the mms proxy to mms2.tracfone.com
current setting are as follow:
Name: Straight Talk
APN: att.mvno
Proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.co
Port: 80
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: mms2.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410

THis shows an actual IP for mms proxy and nothing set for mcc and mnc.

If you want a cheap alternative then you could go my route.

You will need to get a Mifi device, they are generally free with a contract. The early termination fee is usually the cost of a full priced mifi.

A Mugen super battery. They cost 100$ and will last 10-12 hours before a recharge. Only buy it directly from Mugen.

A Skype number and Skype unlimited calls. The phone number costs 20$ for two years and unlimited calls costs 3$ a month.

The minimum data plan for a mifi is typically 5 gig for 50$ a month. + 40 cents in taxes.

That would be about 155$ to set up and 53$ a month. Works on landlines and everything but 911.

I'm getting on straight ATT.... I know zilch about setting up the APN, should i just sitck with that comes with the sim, or is there something else i should/could be using?

Not to hijack this thread or anything.... ;-)

You probably will have to look up a setting that works for you with any prepaid account. There are several threads on here about it, but of course it isn't a static situation and changes over time. Now that ATT has the N4 in their phone profiles, you might be fine out of the box - just be sure to have your plan set up for the N4 and H+ with straight talk - not exactly fullproof from what I have read..

those were my setting before they told me to change, except i didn't have proxy so i can use speed testing. it was working fine till yesterday. the only change i have now after talking to customer service is the mms proxy. i don't think it's my apn setting. it worked fine for 2 and a half months.

well, the truth is, i don't think it matters if it works or not. just the fact that they keep throttling me for no reason, and customer service is impossible to deal with are enough reasons for me to switch.

Thanks! Still really new to all this.

so guess what, my data just magically came back to me, and the rep was right, it was about 24 hours. i have no idea why, and not sure if this is true, but does at&t actually cut off these prepaid service when their network is too congested? if this is true, this will be another reason to change my service.
