LG G3: How am I supposed to hold this thing?

Hahah so inaccurate. Amusing, but inaccurate. You certainly don't understand some of these multi-syllable words you've been tossing out... Controversial? C'mon, look that one up.

I like that rather than engage others with differing views, you discredit and ignore them, i.e. asking if you've offended someone in a mocking manner rather that engage them further.

That's neither here nor there. Personal recommendation, though, is that if you can't hold the phone, it may not be for you :)

I spoke too soon, looks like you didn't catch the reference after all. Apologies for giving credit not due. Carry on :-)

But for the record, the only people I replied to like I replied to you were the ones behaving rudely.

I'm fine with someone thinking a phone is to big to match their own personal preferences. I haven't held the device yet so I can't really say for myself but I suspect it will be fine.

Re: How am I supposed to hold this thing?

I watch videos and play games all the time on my devices and never once thought, man I wish it had larger bezels. If anything I actually hate the larger bezels on the nexus 7

Almost as big as a Tab 3 8.0 but the screen is smaller than a Tab 3 7.0, no surprises there. Still amazed how much smaller the Flex is than the 7.0 and yet so powerful and long-lasting.

The flex is actually a pretty amazing device!

Please keep the discussion civil and on-topic. If you don't agree, there are ways to express your opinion without coming off rude or turning it into a personal attack. And if you can't express your opinion in a civilized manner, no one is forcing you to reply to the topic.

Re: How am I supposed to hold this thing?

I get what you're trying to say. Imagine the Note 4 with a 3-sided display (if the rumours are true), no grip!

That's true only if the side also includes a digitizer, which isn't necessary. The display and the digitizer are two separate things.

Re: How am I supposed to hold this thing?

I believe you are talking about the receptive area of the glass cover over the screen, and how it is mapped in the software. Bearing in mind many devices now have gestures that begin from a bezel or the menu keys. Samsung probably would not be foolish enough to make "side" notifications tap-to-read but it would be nice if you could grab and slide into the main screen area. Intuitive while reducing the number of mishaps.

The G3 should be almost easier to hold than the M8? I still need to see one in the store.

Re: How am I supposed to hold this thing?

The "receptive area of the glass cover" is the digitizer. That's the piece that detects you're touching it, and isn't actually the glass cover itself. The typical screen assembly has three parts: the glass, the LCD / Oled display, and the digitizer (the touch sensor). It would be easy enough to design a display so that the glass and LCD/OLED wrapped around the side, but the digitizer didn't. Therefore no issue with holding the phone by the edges.

Re: How am I supposed to hold this thing?

Very excited to see what the new G3 is like. I am ordering one as soon as I can! I think the phone looks great for being a larger phone and does not look like it will be bulky or anything. LG might have got it right with this one!

Please read again what I wrote. In actual fact the sensor is bonded into the glass face on nearly all devices, on some newer models the screen too is epoxied to the back of the glass making it a single assembly. Due to the nature of these sensors and how they are built, they tend to cover the entire transparent area fully. However software can limit the scale and function of the sensor. PER MY SUGGESTION.

And if you spend twenty seconds on Amazon or Ali Express looking for an SM-T217S compatible 'touchscreen digitizer' or any other 'digitizer' for a phone or tablet, tell me how many are not bonded to a new adhesive glass faceplate. Also you will note the opaque wiring that encircles the touch receptive portion of the panel. Then after that you can tell us how pursuing a false assumption bears any weight on a thread about the G3 which does not have such a screen anyway.

For its own sake the G3 seems to have ordinary touch aside from Knockon type functionality, but I do hope they improved the battery efficiency of Knockon a tad more.

Did knockon eat at the battery excessively?

What you say is true, but nothing in how screens are assembled today precludes a manufacturer from designing the assembly so that the digitizer is sized to the front of the screen ONLY, and not covering the side. The fact that the three pieces are bonded together doesn't mean they have to be exactly the same size.

Nor does the fact that the three pieces are bonded together negate my statement that modern screens are, in fact, made up of three separate pieces.

Just because today's screens are touch sensitive over their entire area doesn't mean tomorrow's screens must be.

5-10% per day? Maybe? Disabling it got me into the three- and four-day range with almost everything else enabled all the time.

"Also you will note the opaque wiring that encircles the touch receptive portion of the panel." Those wires are not optional. A smaller area may be set by the software, that's viable but you cannot make an undersized digitizer without solving the problem of opaque wires. The G3 does not use such anyway and the Samsung may not even use a digitizer if it went with that type of curve...there are also Surface-like pixels almost definitely coming to Android phones very soon.

Wow, that much 'eh? That's significant, but its one of the best features of the phone.

It's not a consumption beyond the pale. The capacitive sensor must remain powered, and the system needs to poll for input to prevent things like waking in your pocket. It takes a lot of intelligence in the firmware to know whether to wake up. And the Knock Codes go even further, with pattern unlocking directly to the home screen.

Put another way, it's not very hard to go two work days even with it on, and its utility is good there. But if for any reason you are without a charger for the next several days, this is one of the battery drainers that can save you a lot of power.

Sure. It makes sense. Just hadn't thought about it that much that the screen needs to be "always listening"or realized that it took that much battery.

Are you kidding me? Page after page of useless information. People complain about anything and are never happy. If you need someone to tell you how to hold a phone then you don't need one. If a phone doesn't suit your needs then find one that does

If someone is without a charger for several days then, that's not the consumption of the phones fault. Knock on drain is minimal in the grand scheme of things.
