LG G3 - Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

I don't know how widespread this is, but seems to be pretty common from my experience. I was unaware of the problem prior, I purchased 4 used G3's, one was manufactured in June, 2 in July and 1 in August, I've noticed the small hairline cracks in all four.

Well, now we know what they're doing with the units that are being returned with said problem. Sorry to hear.

These were all bought from different sellers who had bought as new so don't think we can point that LG is reselling in the used market.

So if the sellers bought new.....shouldn't they be new for you as well?!? We're these sellers from ebay?

I talked to a guy at a T-Mobile store, and he said the crack would not keep him from allowing anyone to jump to a new phone. The guy said they mainly worry about cracked screens and general operability of the phone.

My phone is cracked in the same place, also it looks another one is starting to form near the infra red submitter. The phone felt few times, nothing dramatic, I've noticed no other damage. I've no case on the phone.

This is not good. I took a look at the phone at the store today, trying to make a decision on a new phone shortly. While I love the form factor and the lightness of the G3, I can't say that I was overwhelmed by the build quality of the case. It's certainly possible that, over time, cracks can develop and possibly due to the heat built up inside the phone, which has a lot more work to do with this model. I honestly don't believe anyone is "trolling" here and any such accusation is more "fanboi" behavior than objective analysis.

I'm against the wall. Have a very good deal on a new model or debating about a crazy good deal on a Samsung Note 3, which is slightly larger and has a little better battery life, albeit at a lower resolution. While I can't say I'm a big Sammy fan with their lackluster builds, I do have more confidence in those cases than I did with the G3. It's just so strange that I'd find the G3 build so toyish when they are capable of putting out a phone so well crafted like the Nexus 5. Given the issues of warranty, I may stay away from the G3 on that alone, be it what it may.

Mine has crack over the lower microphone also. WTF? :/
I had Lumia 930 and i sold it because of screen lift problem on all devices because of overheating, and then i got G3 and now he has problem with cracking. WTF?! Made in Korea. :( I am sick of it, flagship phones are garbage. LG i want a replacment phone now. Not in 2 weeks.

Heat would have little to do with this as the bottom of the phone (where reported cracks seem to happen most) is never very hot. All the heat is in the middle and top near the power button.

If you find the LG G3 build to be "toyish" - take a look at the Sony Z3. Appears very solid. I have no problems with the build of G3 and I've had it (in a case) for 3+ months. I think the build on the G3 is very good.

What if they are only willing to repair? Are you ok with being without your phone for a few weeks?

That is what LG is doing- they agree to examine the phone and IF they deem it a warranty issue they will repair. Most of us can't do without our phones for a few weeks and I'm guessing LG knows this. Pretty shoddy support in my opinion, make customers jump through hoops to remedy the companies own design/manufacturing flaws.

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

I might just go ahead and pick one up. I'm going to guess by now that the defective batch is long gone and even if they weren't, LG is stepping to the plate and taking care of its customers.

Funny you say that. Are they stepping to the plate? LG will examine phones sent to them and IF it's determined to be a warranty issue they will repair. This will take 2 weeks plus shipping time both ways. So you will be without your phone for 3 weeks best case scenario. Stand up job guys!

That is a poor response IMHO. I paid $600-700 off contract for this phone and it developed hairline cracks on the top and bottom despite very careful treatment and while being in a case and zagg since day one.

This is LG's screw up… be super nice of them not to further inconvenience us customers.

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

Just checked mine and couldn't believe there is a good crack that goes across microphone. Phone was bought from eBay 5 months ago. If I return it who knows how long it will take and even they can say that it was me who made an damage.

Just noticed the crack yesterday. It's pretty upsetting considering I treat my phones like gold. Does this pose any long term problems? Does LG recognize the problem and offer a fix?

Cosmetic but if it bugs you have LG replace it.

I've had my G3 since July, just removed it from the case to inspect it - no cracks top or bottom.

Edit: When you upgrade to Lolipop it's best to restore to factory defaults - so you may want to kill two birds with one stone.

Yes, cosmetic is the word for this. The area that cracks is not part of the actual frame, just bezels.
