LG G4 H815 Android Marshmallow update rollout and initial impressions

Guys if my serial number is 507 and I have the h815 model will I get the bootloop issue.

Maybe. 507 means it was manufactured in 2015 (5) and in July (07).
That said, I haven't had the bootloop problem on my G4 and it's also 507. I've had a problem with the screen dividing itself in two and acting up. I've contacted LG and I intend to send it to repair as soon as my replacement back cover arrives (mine has a Qi charging coil installed and there's no way I'm giving that away when they eventually replace the phone).

Just got v20d-EUR-xx via OTA update — the changelog reads

1) Improved battery life and
2) Google patch. (Patch level now reads 2016-01-01).

..I wouldn't mind seeing those two items on every single update LG puts out — they're always welcome ;)

I have been using gsam to monitor battery use for some time now — it should indicate if battery life is in fact significantly improved.

Battery life is definitely up by a significant margin. I'm going to let things settle for a couple of days, but a nice surprise.

Just a heads up that my 507 unlocked unbranded European H815 just got Marshmallow via LG Bridge. If you have a similar one but no 6.0, you may want to check Bridge.

Unfortunately the screen has been "turning on black" again these last few days so I'm now really only waiting for the blasted back cover to arrive to send it to LG for replacement. The phone is working. So much that I was able to back it up, update it etc even with the screen only showing no image.
So I'm back on the Z3 Compact for a while.
(I must say I missed this phone. But the camera - the reason I replaced it with the G4 - still s*cks)

Well, you can blame Sony for their refusal to implement OIS because they didn't want a camera hump.

I tried the regular-sized Z5 for a while and the camera is wonderful........in broad daylight. When it comes to indoor shots and low-lighting conditions, it's either noisy or blurry.

The hardware is excellent. It's a damn shame that Sony refuses to put OIS into their phones and also has a half-assed manual mode in the camera app. I mean, they have the A7S II with 5-axis OIS.....

You know I do blame them and already told them what I thought about their "genius" business decision ;)
I have been able to capture some nice pictures with the Z3C, but for every great one the camera produces, 100 are horrible. And then there's the fact that I'm used to shoot in full manual mode. And we know what a joke manual controls are on Sony cameras compared to Nokia's and LG's.

I still keep my fingers crossed for Sony, though. Maybe their latest forecast cuts and low sales numbers make them smell the coffee. Until then, I don't see myself buying another Xperia. Not when Nokia's gearing up for their return and LG has reached such supperb quality in the camera of their phones.

Isn't the actual lens hardware for the G4 camera from Sony? :sly:

Yes. But you see, a camera is more than the lens. It's also aditional hardware and, very important on smartphones, software.
Sony's flagships have great Sony lenses...but then Sony cut OIS, for example, for aesthetic reasons. Which means, no optical stabilisation -> higher chance of blurry photos in day-light and definitely blurry photos in low light.
Then there's the software. Not only is Sony's software a complete disaster from the UI to the capabilities (their "manual mode" isn't really a manual mode but more of a "Superior Auto +"), it also uses terrible algorithms to compose photos, leaving them, specially in low light, with tons of artefacts.

LG (just like Samsung) picked Sony's sensors but then added the OIS and a different - much better - software. Which is why, currently, Sony phones are being beaten by LG, Samsung and Apple...who use Sony sensors.

Seems alright so far, but I can't really see a lot of difference.

This is my first Android, so how does this usually go? Is the first whatever-point-zero Android not that impressive at first, but then further updates really make it sing?

Oh don't try to find any logic in the numbering system on Android. It makes no sense lol
For example, JellyBean was 4.3, KitKat was 4.4 and then Lollipop was 5.0. Marshmallow is now 6.0 even though it should, in reality, be no more than 5.2. The thing is, as Lollipop was Google's equivalent of Windows Vista, Google probably wanted to separate Marshmallow as much as possible from Lollipop. Hence 6.0.
As for the differences, well LG phones don't run stock Android so while a 6.0 release can be great on a Nexus running stock Android, it can run horribly on a LG because the version is different. And vice-versa. Example: when Google released 5.0 it was a disaster and OEMs that rushed updates released it with all the problems in the Google release. Sony, for example, took months to deliver it but the advantage was that Sony actually corrected the problems of 5.0 themselves instead of waiting for Google to fix things.

According to gsam, SOT went from about 8h30m to 9h26m at present. With constant video streaming I get about 6h of SOT. I never feel constrained during normal use over the day, but as we all know, everyone is using their phones differently. The whole 'how is battery life' discussion is not going to go away until some kind of paradigm shift occurs in either battery technology or smartphone design ^^

My phone went flat in 4 hours after the latest upgrade... Never seen this before in any phone I have had previously

Not sure battery life is in question after but maybe it will get better over time
