lg g4s manufactured before September have a defect

I've got my old trusty G2 qued up and ready to roll in the event of failure. My G4 is SN 505 purchased in early July on Verizon.

The G2 I have was actually a refurb that replaced my Wifes G2 that went into a bootloop about a year ago... she now has a V10. The Refurb G2 she got was actually in excellent condition and performed a lot better than the one it replaced making me think her original G2 had a problem from the beginning.

a back-up phone is kinda like a back-up generator. You may never use it. But when **** happens, its good to have one

So this is weird. My g4 died just before Xmas and Telus sent me a refurbished one that I received this past Wednesday. An hour ago, my wife's g4 died the exact same way. No warning. Just died. Weird.

Someone said LG had a capacitor problem. I suppose that could be but I can't imagine they would bother to release that info.

If you have an upgrade available, you can do what I'm thinking about to get the Droid Mini dirt cheap. Order one Verizon's website as an upgrade and put it on device payment plan. At checkout, use promo code "upgrade". That'll knock $100 off, bringing the price down to $8 (gives $100 on other phones too). I'd never buy one as a daily driver, but you can't beat that price on something that's just a rarely used backup phone.

Not sure about the plan you have but if I add another phone to my account my bill will go up $15/month which is the cost for each smartphone. Verizon changed that to $20/month in August so I'd probably have to pay that amount. Unless I was replacing a phone which I wouldn't do for a backup phone. I don't believe Verizon will sell phones without service but of course you can get phones that way from other sellers.

Edit: I checked into the Droid Mini with Verizon for $8. They would add $15.00/month to my account to have that phone added but customer service can manually remove that. My account is not eligible for the $100 discount though so I'd just have to pay the retail price of $108. I am currently looking at a Galaxy S4 or S4 Mini through Amazon. The price is less than the Droid Mini and since it's just for backup I'm not too worried.

As for me, I have a VZW LG G3 that is turned on now but not doing anything that I got before buying the G4 and I can always go back to the Motorola Droid RAZR HD Maxx that I have here with the swollen battery with the cover that is half opened from the battery.

Sorry for the long posts yesterday as I was going through 80+ forums at the same time so I just wanted to give information to protect yourself from Verizon Wireless from screwing you over which happens more often than not. In any case, I found out who runs the Verizon Wireless call centers and who they actually work for as in the past, there were some Verizon Wireless Level 2 tech support representatives who told me to call them by sending me a email and there was a LinkedIn app update today which shows they actually work for Flextronics and do customer support for Verizon Wireless.
Flextronics is a part of Motorola, Inc from what I remember as they are the semi-conductor division of Motorola. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s before the Smartphones, the Motorola phones sold in the U.S. were made in China while the ones sold outside the U.S. were GSM and made by Flextronics in Singapore which was higher quality than the U.S. made ones. I still have my imported Motorola V80 from 2002. In any case, I bought my Black Leather LG G4 from bestbuy.com on July 31, 2015 and received it on August 3, 2015. In a final effort to try to get the Motorola Droid RAZR HD Maxx replaced as I really only needed a newer backside of the phone and a new battery, I called Verizon Wireless Level 2 support and got a clueless rep who told me to take it to a local Verizon Wireless Corporate Store which I did on August 7, 2015. They could not send out the replacement because they can only see IMEI's for up to 2 years while talking to level 1 support and customer service on the phone and my IMEI is from November 1, 2012 so the store rep went talking to the store manager and the resolution was to call Asurion and claim it's damaged. They told me to pay the $99 deductible first and when Asurion ships me a replacement, to bring both the old phone and the one Asurion shipped and they will credit my account for the $99 deductible except I called Asurion to ask and the claims process is not easy with a bunch of forms to fill out. The representative told me the deductible is $149 and not $99 and the other issue is that I should always go through warranty first because they only allow 2 claims a year and if you do 2 claims within 24 months, they will cancel my insurance. The problem is that you never know when you really might need the insurance so not risk using it for this claim.
So I called Verizon Wireless Level 2 tech support a few days later on August 9, 2015 who told me I didn't need to visit a store as all they really had to do was fill out a form that asked if I got injured or not from the phone. This representative said there were no same models available and will be sending out a brand new Motorola Droid Maxx 16GB in kit form which means the retail box with the charger, charger cable, NanoSIM pre-installed and the documentation in the retail box, same as what you would get when you buy the phone from the store. In fact, they even sent another NanoSim still in the packaging in the Warranty Folder that is sent with the replacement devices. She noted the account saying that if I am not satisfied with the replacement, to see if they can locate another Motorola Droid RAZR HD Maxx which has 32GB and told me to check once a week which I did so I received the phone on August 11, 2015 and basically held the phone for a month as they didn't have the one I want available and I was trying to decide if it was worth keeping which at the end, I didn't keep and they will basically send email(s) and SMS(s) telling you to return the phone, doesn't matter if it's the replacement or original. I no longer have the email(s) but this is a screenshot of the SMS using the Verizon Wireless Messages+ app on the LG G4, you can see they will start bugging you about 10 days after you receive the replacement and will continue...

On my Verizon Wireless Loyalty Family Plan with Unlimited Data, adding each line is $9.95 on top of the $59.95 plan charge. Verizon Wireless sells any phone at full retail price without service which for the LG G4 is $649.95 when the G4 was released or less now.

Sounds like the famous motherboard capacitors issue that put many motherboard companies out of business in the 1990's and 2000's when they were using low quality capacitors that was missing one ingredient in the formula for the electrolyte that was stolen which is the reason to only stay with Nichicon, Rubycon, Chemi-Con Japanese Capacitors.

If the phone is paid off, you can upgrade at any time on the current plans, which I wasn't sure if yours was or not. I wasn't suggesting adding an additional line. Adding a line wouldn't have given you that promo discount anyway, and the promos currently on new line activations have time restrictions on them.

I just read on xda forums that there were many who sent their phones to LG for repair in the U.S. and other countries only to receive the same phone back that claims to be fixed except it will still bootloop and those who had unlocked bootloaders now had locked bootloaders.

I can confirm that there are instances of people getting the same phone back, claiming it was repaired, and its not. I know someone that happened to.

Besides that, the G5 is coming out on February 21, 2016:

LG G5 Confirmed for February 21 Launch | LG G4

Still too big, I'll be looking elsewhere, hopefully some other manufacturer comes out with something smaller that's flagship. I heard the Sammy 7 will be 5.1, not sure if that's true but I'll wait for that.

However, the replaceable battery and SD card are still tops for me with features and will over ride anything else. At least it's a move in the right direction for me with the 5.3"
