LG G6, IP68, and Salt/Ocean Water

So the title says it all. Have you/would you put your G6 to the test in ocean water? I'm taking my family to Maui this Fall and REALLY want to use my G6 at the beach and snorkeling. Is the IP68 rating enough to take it to the salt water? I'm reading conflicting info online with some saying they take their IP68 phone (whether Samsung or LG or whatever) in the ocean but then just rinse it off and others saying don't do it.

Your thoughts?

Hey i was in dubai this month...and went to the sea...i took the phone with me but i dint go very deep...few waves did slap my phone...after i finshed my swim...in about 2 hrs i went back to my room and washed my phone under tap water to remove all the sand or any other stuff...now obv wen i tried to charge i got warning moisture detected...stop charging...so i used a blow dyer for little distance ...then after a day or soo all went back to normal...but that same day i would get flashing error of moisture every 2 secs and restart would fix it...soo it took 2 full days for the phone to become normal...wen i was in the sea i had a cover on ...but i washed it naked under the tap...last year i took s7 edge to atlantis on water slides

Mike, I hear ya.

When I got my S6 Active, I was excited to find there was an "Underwater Mode" in the camera app. And when switching to that mode, the on-screen instructions stated to use the physical buttons on the device as the shutter button.

Come to find out, the warranty didn't cover water damage, and only after several rounds of verbal judo with executive consumer relations was I able to get some resolution.

It was only after spending more time on the boards, reading about IP68, and my own experiences, that I learned what my device was capable of.

Marketing wants everyone to see "Waterproof" because "Water-resistant" just isn't as sexy.

Correct, and that's why they usually put disclaimers.

Sadly, they're always part of the fine print that's usually either at the very back of a brochure in really small text or in the corner of an ad for a few seconds, also really small in size.

Folks.... Though tempting, what you see in commercials.. Don't try that at home.
If you need to swim with it get a lifeproof

I just introduced a similar topic last week with my S8 and a water park. I got some clarification from Samsung direct that the phone would be covered under those conditions (read: Chlorine), but yeah, you DO NOT want to do salt water. Look what salt does to a car in the winter. Imagine what it would do to your phone.

From what I understand some people have had luck putting in the freezer, however, I would try in one the G4 subforums which would be the more appropriate place to research this topic and the answer to your question is probably already there.

PS: I bike on a trail by ocean water and its FUDGED up my bike simply from the mist/spray whenever the water crashes into the concrete wall.

1. Water = corrodes
2. Salt water = corroding on steriods

Correction: CONTAMINATED water corrodes. Distilled/deionised water on its own is nearly safe. It's the minerals in the water that catalyse the reactions with metals, not the water itself.

I take my LG G6 to the pool a lot... I use it to control the music on my BT speaker and I even shoot videos of my kids underwater. This moisture alert is quite normal, I always get that after submerging the phone. I recommend a small piece of toilet paper to remove the water from the usb connector. The heat from a hair dryer can cause some glue in the device to melt.

I also take my phone with me while kitesurfing on the beach. I did like 10 times already.. or even more. I use it to track my activity and to call home or to get a taxi or uber after a downwind. I do however keep it in a bag in my pocket... So ... it gets saltwater, but it is minimal. Never had a problem...

Just an update. I've been here in Maui for 2 weeks now. Been using my G6 in pools and sea. Tons of photos underwater, everywhere. Love this phone. Just take it for a 5 second fresh-water rinse after the ocean and it's good to go. HD video underwater is fantastic. Photos look great too. Anyway I don't think twice about "babying" this thing; after all, it's just a thing. Maybe I'll get around to posting some photos/vids after I get home.

Still on vaca, heading home tomorrow. But here's a quick sample, no edits at all, just widescreen video, about 50 seconds worth. Have about 100 videos on this G6 and many underwater...love this phone! Watch in 1080p60...Oh and the kids are my 2 older ones...
