Hi!

I'm a current Moto XPE user thinking of upgrading thru T-mobile... I've noticed that the LG G6 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 are about the same price...

Question 1: Should I get the G6, or go for the Galaxy S7 and get the Gear VR? (I've always been interested in the VR.)

Question 2: Does the LG G6 work with an affordable VR headset similar to Gear VR?

I've never really been a fan of the Galaxy phones since the S3, but have liked just about all the LG devices since about that time (even the Flex).

Thanks!

G6 doesn't do VR.

I'm going to assume you mean the regular S7 and not the edge but I'll try to reference both.

As for which one to get I suggest holding them both and opening apps, typing etc. They are 2 very different feeling phones and you'll have to figure out which ones more comfortable.

If you like screen protectors, especially tempered glass, then the S7 edge will be a pain to find one for. The S7 is a bit easier to protect. The G6 is excellent for screen protectors.

If you want a bigger screen go for the G6. Better battery, G6. Camera is personal preference so you need to look at images from both. I prefer the G6 and especially the wide angle lens.

Screen technology typically goes to the S7 as it's an AMOLED but not everyone, including me, likes it. It has deeper black and doesn't need to light the entire screen for things like always on display. It also has a yellowish tint to it though due to being AMOLED.

Both have wireless charging but the S7 has fast wireless charging.

S7 has Samsung pay which is excellent. LG is coming out with their own for the G6 very soon.

Me personally, I feel the G6 is by far the best feeling device on the market including new phones. I also feel the camera is far better for my tastes and the battery is incredible. The S7 edge gave me roughly the same battery life as the G6 does but the G6 destroys the S7 battery. I also don't like that Samsung phones lag. Whether it's right away or 3 months from now, they lag. My G6 is buttery smooth.

Before making a decision remember, these are my opinions only from my own experiences with all devices mentioned.

Wow, thanks! This is quite thorough and extremely helpful. Especially regarding the G6 and VR. That's a bummer. I'm not sure how much I'd use VR however the idea of watching Netflix and playing games does interest me.

I'd love to know what others think.

If you have a Best buy near you go in and find the Samsung display. They should have a gear VR demo you can try. VR makes me kinda sick to my stomach so I've given up on it. My kids love it though.

I would blindly choose G6 ...i had s7 edge...i had a vr but never used it and sold it...if u think u would really user vr then s7 edge...G6 is one of the best andriod phone i have used...right now i have Axon 7 128gb with 6gb ram and G6

Yeah I don't think VR is that important to get a subpar phone compared to what's out now. G6 is definitely a better device which you'd be using more. If you really want VR then just get the S8 with VR.

I have an S7 edge and the Gear VR headset, and recently upgraded to the LG G6. I fell in love with the S7 edge's... edge, but eventually the novelty wore off and I found that I really preferred to have a flat screen. I wanted a device that had IP68 rating, so that only leaves a handful of phones (especially on Verizon). Another bonus with the G6 is the wide angle camera. I played with the S8 and S8+ quite a lot on several occasions. They look and feel great, but I just didn't feel like they were the phone(s) for me. I really liked the form factor of the G6, and just find that the fingerprint sensor is in a very natural location. The device just feels natural to handle and operate. I prefer the fingerprint sensor on the back (easy to unlock while holding it with 1 hand) than on the front of the device like the S7's. The LCD display on the G6 is crisp with great colors, whereas the super AMOLED displays are super saturated. I used to really like that, but my tastes have changed and I am finding that I prefer the G6's display.

As for the Gear VR - I thought it was great and had a lot of fun with it... but I honestly haven't used in in months after the novelty wore off.

Just my two cents..

I was hoping to hear from someone that has used both or switched from one to the other... Thanks for your two cents! :)

Like you, I'm concerned that I'll pay for the VR and then get bored after awhile. VR Netflix novelty would probably wear off.

I also had a S7 edge and gear VR (still in my closet). I jumped on the VR promo last fall and used it twice. I got some free content from Oculus. For me, the experience was a hassle. Update the phone, open the store, log in to the store and download every add on required. Jurrasic Park was cool, but after a while the novelty wore off. The goggles got foggy and that's all she wrote. Some people enjoy VR, but it's not for me.

The G6 is solid and I'm having a great time with the camera. I'm making sure I've got decent lighting and putting the wide angle to good use. Build is fantastic and the device is easy to protect as mentioned above.

At $350 on ATT, it was a no brainier for me.

Thanks, everyone! I did end up getting the G6, and agree with everyone here. The phone feels great in the hand and the camera is fantastic! The flat screen and the ability to have a tempered glass screen protector was a huge deciding factor. I hate the launcher and icon packs, so I loaded Nova launcher with the stock icon pack and sideloaded the Nova companion with Google Now integration. It's perfect now. In the end I decided the newer phone at the right price was the better option. I wish the G6 had a VR option so I could try it out, but I don't regret my decision one iota.

Congrats. One deal breaker for me was S7/S8 lack of hands free Ok Google. LG G6 is the best phone out there.

Totally never thought of that! You really can't say "Ok Google" on the S8? Did Samsung gimp this so people would use Bixbie instead?

Only when the screen is on for the Samsung phones, although I believe bixby is able to listen when the screen is off. The LG G6 is able to listen/respond when the screen is off.

Hope you like your new :) also i hate the stock too so i used a theme instead (tired of installing nova everytime tbh i rather try stock for a change :P). Tbh i had an s8 and was on these forums as of recently, most people i've seen with s7 edges said their battery life tanked since a recent update and to be quite honest i think the g6 has better battery management than the s8(+).

So far I love it! perfect size and I'm actually amazed at the battery. I usually have about 35-40% left over by 10PM. I can't speak to the Galaxy s7, but the G6 is fantastic and bloody fast!
