LG Optimus S (LS670) Maintenance Release 2/7/11

Escaping/Rooting LG670ZVC
1) Reboot into LG stock recovery
2) Trigger recovery to mount /system by attempting to flash V8_to_V9 update.
3) When update fails, /system is mounted, adb shell will now work
4) follow rageagainstthecage instructions, replacing /data/local/tmp with /sdcard
5) once root, push flash_image and custom recovery to /
6) flash them
7) reboot recovery
8) see recovery.bin

ok... so I can push all of the files up, but I keep getting chmod: permission denied when I try to change the file permissions... any idea's?

Actually, if I change to using "/system/bin/chmod" I get a "operation not permitted"... for 755, 4755, 777, etc...

*face palm*

ok... even though it gives an error, check your rageagainstthecage permissions... "/system/bin/ls -l /sdcard"

it was 777 even though it gave an error...

YAY I have root again... (at least for now...)

/sdcard is a FAT partition, thus doesn't have meta-data to support permissions. That is probably why you were seeing "operation not permitted" The FAT translation driver just sets default permissions.

I just went into my settings then system updates. Says system is up to date. Also no firmware update available. Did it automatically download the maintenance fix? What should the latest software version be for this update?

Sprint is releasing it over the next few days, so some stock phones may not have it yet.

Now, a few questions that popped up for me:

- Is there any benefit to returning to stock and updating the baseband to the lastest version (since I'm still at v8)?
- Are there any disadvantages to doing so, say, like not being able to use the current ROMs, or not being able to restore a nandroid backup?

I used the lg update tool to update my phone...

Whatever the case, I have root again (even if I'm still running the stock rom).

Sorry I forgot to mention that you can ignore the chmod.
Use your root opportunity to install a custom recovery.
Then check out VCRom.

1) None as of yet, but I'm a sucker for updates.
2) Many so far, LG went out of their way to try to stop us. Ultimately they failed since I rooted VC, but the new radio baseband is quite interesting and may have caused a great divide.

Updating to VC leaves you two stable options right now:

1) Install my new VCRom, a clean, deodexed, rooted ROM of VC stock.
2) Follow my guide to returning to stock thread, return to V8, install the V9 update which will downgrade your baseband to V9. Many have reported success with this method.

Honestly if you like your phone the way it is, don't upgrade. I took this upgrade and made VCRom as practice. It is my first ROM.
The divide this new update causes is not as bad as a new OS upgrade (like Gingerbread), but it is good practice and now if/when they do release Ginger I am ready to make you a ROM based on it :)

I just wanted to confirm specifically, has someone updated to VC baseband/radio then gone through the procedure of V8 followed by V9 update and were left with V9 baseband/radio? How would one actually verify their radio was V9 since it seems the status pages are just hard coded strings in the OS package and not generated by reading data from the current radio.

I could imagine a scenario where you upgraded to VC baseband/radio using the maintenance update, then did the V8 downgrade + V9 update, but the V9 baseband/radio update skipped its baseband/radio install because it was older than what was already installed. I know it would make more sense for it to just unconditionally install the radio it was packaged with, but how would one rule out this scenario. Is there some checksum for the radio that can be compared?

I'm sure I'm just being a little paranoid, always liking to know ahead of time I can get back to what I used to have for sure rather than guessing or assuming.

It sure would be easier to have that standalone radio updater working :)

Have not tried it myself but I believe beezy has with success. May want to wait for him to confirm.

I don't think the radio updater checks anything (which is another problem within itself but I digress).
Just make sure you follow the nandroid restore guide to a T and do NOT under ANY circumstances attempt to flash RADIO with a custom recovery.

I think I have. I originally upgraded to vc and did a nand restore. Well now while rooted I had handsfree activation issues. At this point I believe I had vc radio still. Went to v8 then v9 which flashes a new radio which it tells you its doing and no more problems. I took that as confirmation that the vc radio was gone and v9 was successul. Was that what your looking for?

yes, thank you.

I will try to look at your other posts to see what the hands free issues were as I'm curious about those.

I don't know the specifics but Beezy had them too. Only while using vc radio and v9 Tom rooted. Disabled root and the problem went away. Rooted again and there it was.

However with the working root on vc rom and radio there are no issues so I assume it was something with z4 and vc radio. Naturally I forgot to run a log. I need to install my logging apps again lol

Is there any benefit to upgrading to the Radio included in this update?

I noticed the zip-file, the bulk of it, is a new radio.img.

Is there a way to just upgrade the radio without updating the rest of the stuff?

Or is there even a benefit to the new radio update?

OK so I have the update ready on my phone, I dont want it, yet. I used root explorer to move the zip (ce68c4a9a3ab.LS670ZV9_VC_Inc) to sd card and thought that would be the end. Instead I keep getting popups prompting me to update/install about every hour or so. I even have Sprint Updater 1.5 frozen in Titanium BackUp, I thought that would prevent update from even downloading, lol. Will these go away anytime soon, or is it best to just take it and reroot as I have seen others do. Its not GB or anything, my sd card has not unmounted once, knock on wood :)

If anyone wants the zip file I will upload it....

small zip file only 16.7 mb

Alright so I am rooted and I'm one of the first users to use the root method to get root. I get the stupid OTA update thing, but I have not run it yet, and definitely wont be running it since you guys have so many problems with it. Maybe once the problems are fixed I will try out the new radio, but has anyone even seen any performance increases with the new radio yet?

This is the same question I have. I keep getting a pop-up every few minutes telling me to install. I'd like to put an end to that.

If I do install and root, am I only able to use the VCRom or can I go back to the Lego Rom I'm currently using?

Cordell, were your methods successful in preventing the pop-ups from reoccurring?

I wish I had a answer for you, I am still getting them. They come about every 30 minutes! I tried to freeze sprint updater 1.5 with titanium backup but that doesn't help :(

i havent gotten any popups to install yet...im running stock ROM. did it auto-install? and for anyone on stock rom, did it help with anything??

thanks

calidoc75, read trekkie1701c's comment...

...

Maybe someone else can tell you whether any changes were noticed with installation on stock...

Edit: I left the update notification in the notification bar instead of clearing it. Seems like I haven't gotten any pop-ups to remind me to install yet. I hope this sticks! ---> Nevermind, it didn't work. =(
