So I just visited my friend who still has an iPhone 5 (released in 2012 i think?) his battery swelled up and the screen started to pop out on its own. I can't help but think about sealed phones like the S8. Anyone worried about it? Would you keep the phone for that long?

Not worried. Since the Note 7 batteries catching fire, Samsung has implemented some of the most thorough quality controls in the industry.

For one thing there's no way Id keep the S8+for three years. I'm not worried about the swelling battery. I hope your friend is upgrading asap with that happening on his iPhone.

A few weeks ago I switched from my iPhone 5S to the S8+ and couldn't be happier. If the S8 had the battery problem it would have showed up by now.

BTW my daughter had the same problem with her iPhone 5S. Apple has or had a note in the system to replace the phones even if out of warranty. Not sure if they are still doing it but worth a shot.

Like others have said I probably won't have this phone in a few years so I'm not worried.

Restart your device weekly, this will help keep the battery running effeciently. I get a new phone yearly anyway

I have never seen an OEM battery swell up, even on older phones.

I have seen the cheap Chinese Ebay knockoffs swell up though, on phones w/removable batteries.

Yeah he is. He's bummed about it, apparently he still likes small screen phones. He would've probably kept using it lol. He's getting the iPhone 6, sucks cause he really liked the headphone jack so he didn't want the iPhone 7. A punch to the gut for true Apple fans.

If you worked at Best Buy before, you've probably seen it. I saw many times, phones that are 2 years or older, battery starts to swell.

He should get the SE size he would like but same internals. Batteries will swell, as long as we are dealing with millions of mass produced phones it will happen.

Really? Can you give me more details? Maybe I can let my friend know... that'd be great because he'll be able to keep the phone as a backup.

As long as I am under warranty I really don't care.

Only 1 year warranty though. Samsung didn't even want to replace my S6 Active's SIM tray under warranty, told me it was my fault it broke. Wanted me to send in the entire phone to inspect it. Paid $17 for an aftermarket one. Cheapos.

Yeah, I do take care of my phones and usually have had replaceable batteries so I didn't wear my OEM batteries out as much lol.
