wjdonova@gmail.com: you are not in the right directory. If you were, you would see a file called ADB. You need to extract the SDK zip to the Macintosh HD drive exactly like I posted in the picture. In terminal, you should then, start out with a

cd ..
cd ..
cd and*
cd tools

ls -al will show adb as a file.

Gotta go. Be back in 90 minutes for further assistance.

Cory, this is great stuff. I was going to wait for Unrevoked, but this procedure doesn't seem bad at all, so I'm going to give it a shot later!

Awesome deal! Thanks :)

On a separate note, the procedure can go completely sideways, if the files aren't where they need to be on your Mac. I will be posting a video shortly that will demonstrate how to make sure they are in the right place.

I waited for like a half an hour , finally had to leave for work . I needed my phone so I just restarted in bootloader. my phone works but I'm assuming not rooted because I think complete the steps. I got through the first phone reboots fine , do I need to start all over again or can I continue from there somehow

I'm having the same problem. It has that first stream of green text but they all say "no image or wrong image" or something like that. I double checked everything in steps 1-4 even formatted my sd card and did everything over and still nothing!

Help pleease :)

I am an idiot. Sorry about the double post but I wanted to help out the other person who had this problem.

Don't rename the file "PG05IMG.zip" because the file is already a zip file and you may have it set up so that you are actually ending up renaming it PG05IMG.zip.zip which shouldn't work.

Trying now.... See how this goes...

EDIT: boom. worked :p

Standby. I think it's the way you guys are downloading these files. Video will be uploaded as soon as YouTube gets around to it :/

Sweet!

thank you very much for the help, FYI..I try running it without renaming and renaming and nothing worked ...ugh and remember that I am a total ..noob...I'm sure I screwed something simple up ...I will wait for the video or more help thank you ..

Okay post #2 has a video. It looks better in full-screen via the AC channel. I also added very detailed notes to post #1 about how-to download the files. I'm not sure I can get any more specific than that :p

Just received my tbolt, was psyched to see this thread and jumped right in. Went through nearly the entire process without incident, but am stuck on the final copy/paste series of reboots.

First this:

localhost:tools JTC$ ./adb shell /data/local/busybox cp /data/local/su /system/xbin/su
/data/local/busybox: permission denied

I tried starting over from "./adb devices" and then got to this:

localhost:tools JTC$ ./adb shell /data/local/psneuter
mmap() failed. Operation not permitted

I've rooted previous devices before, but have never used adb. With that in mind, is it possible to restart the whole process? Maybe you know of a better way to proceed?

Gotta say that even though I'm having difficulties, this is absolutely the best rooting guide that I've ever seen. Thanks for any help

False alarm....was too anxious to wait, so rebooted phone and tried from where I left off. Completed last series of pushes without incident. All seems good now.....will report back if anything seems funky. Thanks again for your wonderful guide.

cory...thanks for the video..i was downloading to the wrong place..root went flawless after that..thanks again for the help

work perfect thanks. would be great if you could add step-by-step instructions for removing the bloatware and on updating to custom ROM. your instructions are really well written. thanks!

Thanks Deenutz. I actually I had planned on doing that today. It's actually easy as pie, but it comes up enough that I think it's time to write about it.

smartass12: I suspected as much. This is no fault of your own. It occurred to me later that depending on the browser and configuration of the browser, those files could have ended up anywhere!

Jtc55 I'm glad it all worked out for you too.

Hey I am new to the android platform. I successfully rooted my thunderbolt using the above mentioned way. Thank you so much Cory.

I just have a few questions, sorry if they are Newbie questions, but in regard to root explorer. Is it an application that I can download and run on my mac? it seems that you refered to renaming and putting files into folders, which only makes sense using a computer (NOT my thunderbolt).

If so, where can I download this application? and will it allow me to manage my applications (as in mount my thunderbolt and create and delete applications/files, add apk files like titanium pro which I have sitting in my download folder on my mac)?

I seem to have run into an odd situation. When I enter this command

./adb shell /data/local/wpthis

I get this group of text back:

Something doesn't seem right. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The reason I ask is I did complete a the rooting guide earlier today, and as I normally do I did a full wipe of the device (which ROOT should survive without issue) however I tried to use titanium backup and it said my phone was not rooted, and I did reinstall superuser from the market.

This prompted me to follow the rooting guide and do it again but I got the same "warning" text in my previous post the first time and again this time.

lets find out if you retained root, download a terminal emulator from the market ,a free on.
Open it and type su
then hit enter

$ should change to #

I just finished, so I will d/l the emulator I used in the past. I always understood ROOT survived a device wipe.
