Major battery improvement because of update?

yeah, I normally pull mine off the charger, get in the car to go to work, plug it into the charger and when it turns green again, I pull it off. That makes a HUGE difference in the first 10%.

I'm currently at hour 27 and I'm at 24% with video chatting on 4G last night and been running Pandora all morning. My battery life is no longer even worth managing after the update, it's a non factor now.

That's unbelievable. With little usage, a few text and emails and a few minutes of web, I would down to 24% in about 5 hours. If did video or 4G I would be dead in a couple of hours.

I think we need a charger that will disconnect and then reconnect itself automatically (simulating what we are doing in the morning to "top it off").

I suppose a cheapo timer from the hardware store would work where you set it to turn off and then back on again at a predetermined time, such as right before you wake up in the morning so that it'll top off the battery.

I've been doing the unplug/plug thing every morning and it definitely gives you that little extra to make sure you have some in reserve by the end of the day. You would think they could have easily added this to a "feature packed" device such as the EVO. To allow it to stop charging after the battery is at 100% and then never charge again until disconnected and reconnected is asinine.

I would say your battery life is out of the norm.

I would suggest going to a Sprint store and asking for a new battery, chances are (given your situation) you may get one for free. I would also suspect the charger unit you are using, some people have reported problems with the OEM HTC charger shutting off before fully charging the Evo battery (read my post on last page).

That or you have really low reception. I went camping last weekend in a 1 to 2 bar area and my battery was getting killed fast.

^Very true. With low signal the radio will keep "hunting" for better reception increaisng power drain significantly. If your signal is quite poor, you may want to force your phone to roam all the time and see if signal from a Verizon tower is better in your area.

What can I say ... I have total battery envy from what I'm reading here and there makes me ask the quesiton of "Do you folks use your phone at all???" ;-)

I heavily depend on my phone for work ... And let's be honest, I haven't found a "stock" HTC battery that can keep up (have had 6700, 6800, 6850) - so I've ALWAYS bought an extended battery which has solved my needs ... But this phone is just weird ... The standard battery it totally depleted in 4 or 5 hrs ... And the extended battery I've got gets me a scant few hours more.

Thanks to all for these posts ... Though I'm totally frustrated, I've found great thoughts and tricks here ...
Cheers

i don't believe you can force roam an android phone....

Haven't looked into it myself as I have good signal in my area. But I've noticed some of the newer smartphones don't have that option, so you may be right.

UPDATE: Forced roaming not an option available on the Evo.

I have a strong signal in my area---work and home. I was thinking about going to Sprint to see about a new battery. I actually use a different Sprint charger at home and keep the HTC OEM charger at work.

I did try the little top-off method mentioned on the forum. That does seem to make a difference. I unplug the phone when I leave home. Get to work and plug it in again until it goes green then take it off. Hey if it adds and hour or two that would be great. Then I would be up to 8!

Mine's great, but this morning, my battery drained 30% in an hour-but I know the culprit. The exchange server at work went down and my Evo kept trying to connect...over and over and over again for over an hour, as soon as I turned off the syncing to that account, my battery life resumed it's normal drain. I wonder if those with bad batteries have some rogue account draining their battery life.

It's probably the trickle effect.

Your battery stops charging after it gets to 100% when you're charging overnight.
So the morning after you experience the effect of it going down quickly.

There are many things in this thread that you can use to not experience this.

I know all about the trickle effect- my phone normally drops to about 90 after a few minutes, but then drains slowly after that. That wasn't the problem. As I explained, my exchange account was trying to sync repeatedly with a server that was down. I'd never experienced that drastic a drop in battery life until today. As soon as I turned off the syncing with that account, the drain stopped.
