Manually build kernel modules, tun.ko, etc.

I'm curious if anyone has instructions on building a tun.ko for the Thunderbolt based on the android NDK r5b. I found a similar guide online at another forum for the HTC Hero but I'm encountering a bunch of compile errors at make time starting with "elf.h: No such file or directory"

I'd like to try compiling it myself for educational reasons, even though I noticed another awesome person's already done the legwork.

Anyone have any pointers or direction to go to figure out why the compile's failing?
