Mate 9 is too underrated!

How is Note 8 compared to Mate 9?

I don't have a mate 9.

You know, I find it odd we hear all about features on smartphones and no one really talks about call quality, call sound, and speakerphone sound quality from either end of a call anymore...and really those are the big reasons to own a cell phone in the first place...sure a nice phone helps but if a call sounds bad then everything else is pointless.....so...does anyone have an opinion or a comment on those before i buy this phone? Thanks.

Smartphones are no longer cell phones, it's the least reason why you buy it for, yeah it sound stupid but it is.

To answer your question, call quality is excellent, cell reception is great speakers are good quality but a bit disorted at high volume if you play rock music or something similliar.

The earpiece is great as well, i don't call or getting called much, but from the 10 times i did, it was better than my previous S7E and it does it's job.

Well most people don't prioritize calls on cell phones anymore.

With that said when I reviewed my honor 8, I did discuss call quality. And I do agree that it should be discussed even if briefly.

I wonder if our ignoring call quality and sound has cost us...these companies that produce smartphones have terrific tech engineering labs working hard on making the tech even better at everything it does...constant improvement seems to be the modus operandi these days with all tech...not talking about it, not complaining when perhaps we should has likely caused those engineers to completely ignore advancing that part of the technology...where could we be if they strove to improve the sound those tinny little speakers make?...there are home speaker drivers that attach to large panes of glass in windows to turn the entire pane into a speaker...reverse that and it becomes a microphone, sort of...the point is...has our silence on the topic lost us the chance for great improvements and new technology fronts for sound from small sources like phones and tablets?...i'd love to speak with an engineer at samsung or any other device maker about the potential for advancing sound qaulity...and there's a second point...why not add DAC to these smart devices?...make a real audifiles dream device?...something that sounds good alone but when connected to a home speaker system sounds freaking AMAZING...there are quite a few companies out there that would love to collaberate and license their name and products to go along with these phones, tablets, and laptops...and some do, i've seen B&O, Harmon Kardon, Beats, before on devices, in fact, i still own an old HTC smartphone with Beats sound enhancment and use it just as an MP3 player...because the sound when connected to my home system is absolutely Fantastic!...Do any of you know of a new or new-ish smartphone with the Beats sound enhancment???...i'd buy that right now...this instant...credit card in hand.

The v30 is supposed to have good audio, but if you need great audio then get a usb dac. Doesn't limit you to very specific devices.

It's not that smart phone makers can't make great audio, it's more an issue of cost and priorities, roi, etc. They make a conscious decision to focus on other aspects.

There is not a lot of discussion about the Mate 9's excellent radios and reception.

Reviewers probably are in max reception areas. Test the phone where there is dodgy reception, which ones hang onto a signal? Weak signal is one of the worst battery killers.

I've used my Mate 9 in a number of weaker 2G only locations here in California and Nevada.
Voice calls were fine with few low signal drops.

I must say my network carrier coverage has improved immensely over the past 2 years.

Have no fear...the Huawei Mate 9 handles voice very well in my opinion as an actual user.

I don't think I've enjoyed any phone as much as the Mate 9. In the last few years I've had an HTC One, a couple Moto X's, a Nexus 6, and a Moto G4+ (I was really on a Motorola kick for a while). I just can't get over how impressed I am with the Mate. Always getting 8+ hours of SOT and never having to worry about charging during the day? Absolutely addictive. Dual cam with an insane amount of control in the camera app? Yes please. A SOC that can chew through anything? Yep. Stupid fast charging? Got it.

The only thing I really miss these days are the killer blacks that AMOLED can provide.

With the camera do you guys stick to 20mp resolution with no zoom or the 12mp resolution to take advantage of the Hybrid Zoom? And do you notice much of a difference between the two?
On my P10 I tend to stick to 20mp just to try get the best detail possible but I still struggle to see much difference between the two

I switch back and forth then often forget which shooting option I'm in. Seems to me like detail is about the same with saved pics.

And consist performance, this is the ONLY phone i enjoy playing Tekken 6 and angry bird 2, since it barely lags and has no slowdows, unlike the S8 Note 8 S7... and battery is really epic.

Funny how you enjoy playing games on the Mate 9 compare to Samsung considering Samsung phones has a much better GPU than Huawei.

Specs isn't everything, Samsung throttling the device with dvfs and kernel, i've battled this on the s7e and Note 5, i seen on YouTube how awful the ppsspp emulator runs on the Note 8.

That's one of my biggest grips with Samsung

Their skin isn't too stable after a few months. But they do run games smoother.

I personally enjoy such a big screen that 8s still a 16:9 aspect ratio. I've got a PopSocket on the back of my case which makes handling this wide of a phone much nicer. Plus it helps when I reach my thumb across the screen to each corner.
