Message indicator light doesn't last long

Hi folks,
That little green "new message/alert" indicator light at upper left is fine, but it doesn't last long enough! It must quit flashing at a certain interval. I'd like it to flash until I acknowledge that I've seen a message is waiting without having to "wake up" my phone. Thanks for the keen insight around here. And wouldn't it be keen to have different led color for different types of messages?

I know I was messing around in chomp today, and with it open, Im pretty sure I found an option of how long the light blinks until it times out, but Im not sure if there was a "til messages checked" option. now I have handcent and I havent messed around in the settings alot yet, so not sure if that app has the same setting option. havent used the stock messaging app at all so no clue on that one.
