Mic issues?

the mic on my wife's nexus has apparently quit working. When she makes calls or tries to use voice commands you can barely hear her or the phone doesn't recognize commands. Now if she uses speaker phone it works fine. Before she returns it,I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue, if so, is there a fix?
