[MOD] noCIQ for EI22 :: 11/9/2011 :: UPDATED SCRIPT - REDL/REFLAS

Re: [MOD] noCIQ for EI22 :: 11/9/2011 :: UPDATED SCRIPT - REDL/RE

This isn't too old, so I hope it's OK to bump. I just read an article on Lifehacker about Carrier IQ (see Carrier IQ: How the Widespread Rootkit Can Track Everything on Your Phone, and How to Remove It) and how there's an app that will detect it for you and, if you pay $1 for a pro license, remove it for you. From what I've read before, the noCIQ thing always involved a deodexed ROM in some way. Will the pro version of this app work on an odexed ROM, like rooted stock? For some reason, I can't ask on the XDA thread, and I couldn't seem to find a clear answer by searching. If anyone here could answer this, I'd appreciate it. While I kind of expect at some point to move to a custom ROM with CIQ removed already, it would be nice to get rid of it without needing a new ROM, if possible. Thanks.

You could pay the dollar, or since you're rooted, you could just flash a stock-like ROM like this one: [ROM][EI22]MostlyStock Rebuild | 11/17 - xda-developers where they've done all the work for you and you know CIQ is removed for sure.

I think it would be tough to removed CIQ without deodexing a ROM just cause it's so ingrained into the system, but I don't know for sure.

+1 on this.. I would go with something that we know has it fully removed like the NO CIQ mods included in the deodexed ROMs.

k0nane has it down to a science on how to remove the stuff and has been doing it for different devices for other carriers too....

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I understand that in a way installing a custom ROM is an easier way to get rid of CIQ. But the app mentioned is by TrevE who, as I understand it, was one of the ones who originally found and/or examined CIQ, so I figured it would probably be a relatively safe option. Perhaps not totally so though, and I'm not sure I want to try it if I don't know it's supposed to work on an odexed ROM like stock rooted. Maybe a custom ROM is a better option, even if it is just the mostly stock one. I've got to decide or figure out what's the easiest way to get my apps and data back after the wipe and install though. I've always just reinstalled from scratch on previous factory wipes and while that works fine, it's kind of a pain because it takes quite a while to do. I know of some options, I'm just not sure what's best or easiest.

You have a lot of options, which I think is what a lot of people like, yet I understand how that can be a pain sometimes. I checked out the Treve app, and it doesn't say anything about requiring a deodex ROM, so technically it should work. I'm still a little dubious, though, cause an ODEX package is still pretty much gift-wrapped. De-ODEXing it means you unwrap it so you can pull out and modify the contents, which is why most custom ROMs are de-ODEXed to allow the devs to tinker with them. Since Carrier IQ is so ingrained in the system, I think it would be pretty tough to remove it without de-ODEXing, so that's why I'm a little wary of this program versus K0nane's work on deodexed ROMs. But, like I said earlier, the program description mentions nothing of needing a de-ODEXed ROM, so maybe there's a way of doing it that's way beyond my (limited) level of comprehension.

As for back-up of data. MyBackup root is super-easy to use and should work for you. I use Titanium PRO, but it's definitely not as simple to use, though it's more powerful and gives you more options. Since you said you want easy to use, MyBackup root would be my recommendation. Good luck.

Hmm. From what I've read, it seems like some people are having issues with using this app to remove CIQ. I guess a custom ROM would be the safer option. I have both MyBackup Root and Titanium Backup, but just the free version of the second right now. And from what I've seen of them so far, I'd have to agree that Titanium is more complex. I kind of need apps that I moved to the SD card to be restored from backup directly to the SD card, otherwise I'll have space issues and not be able to do an automated restore of everything. Will these apps do that? Also, I read on XDA (at Deodex an existing ROM? - xda-developers) about using CWM to do an advanced restore of just the data in order to get things back -- anyone here have experience with that and know how well it will work, or in what conditions it will work? It sort of sounds like as long as you do it with similar ROMs, so with something like rooted stock EI22 to the MostlyStock based on EI22 it should be OK, but I'm not sure. Thanks for your help.
