More Apple Like. Still love Samsung...for now.

Why does Samsung feel like they need to follow Apple's practices.. Money. I get it.

That's what I'm seeing more lately and certainly more obvious then before. Seems like we are just getting a Note XR and like Apple charging a premium for it.

They have no reason to get rid of the 3.5mm headphone jack, it's not like they paid out Billions for a headphone company.

The Note series is becoming more like an S series with an S-Pen or like the "S" in their line like iPhone XS. FFS, they couldn't upgrade the display and put 90hz? Let me guess the S11 will get it.

Having said all that I'll give them a pass because they give us Pre-Order Bonus and $200 minimum Trade-in. Otherwise, my phones will only be from OnePlus.

If they were apple like they would wait for someone else to perfect a technology then install it slap an I on it and call it new.

Were at a point now where the leaps between phones are not as great as they use to be. So if you got a Note 9 and move to a Note 10 you might be, meh. But if your going from a Note 5 to a 10, it's a whole new world. As for the 45w charger not in the box? Disappointing yes but Apple like? Not really Apple like would have been to triple the price.

Here's the deal with the headphone jack. This has been a trend for years and Samsung finally succumbed to it. So it's not Samsungs fault. All of those headphone companies that have not produced usb c versions of headphones are responsible.

And oh yeah, a 90hz display would have made it look so much better, give me a break. First half the consumers out there couldn't tell the difference between a 90hz and a 30hz display. So would you rather have gotten a 90hz display FPS on the back or in screen FPS at 60hz?

Note: cross posting from a Note 9 thread since it can also work here I think.

I found this video on a Note 9 vs Note 10+. It shows the phones side by side with not much difference in size, just screen display. Also a few other items and specs. I'll be upgrading because I can and want to. Not sure about preordering yet since my 9 isn't paid off and I'll just trade up. My phone is my major purchase. I don't have cable or internet at home and still a small 24" TV (crochet or play with my phone while I watch) and my laptops have been inexpensive ones.

There is a specific reason to remove it: water-tightness. I bet Samsung decided to do so after they were starting to get sued over the water tightness ratings vs real life for their phones.

the bezels aren't that huge. my grandson has one and when it has a case on it you can set it next to the Xs and really can't see any difference in the bezels.
when people use the phone for texting and calls does the camera or the screen make that big of a difference? as for price he picked his up from Swappa brand new for $575.00. no monthly payment. if you want a smaller screen with a few more features I guess the s10e would be okay. when you use the Xr you really don't notice a lot of difference

HTC removed it very early on as well

Barely anyone in the West (or at least Europe) uses HTC or Motorola phones anymore. Both are much smaller companies than Apple and Samsung, so their decision to remove the jack likely had a much smaller impact and was less noticed.

Those who say the Note 10 series is Samsung doing an Apple are wrong. The only thing Samsung have done that remotely ressembles Apple’s kind of decision is removing the jack. The Note 10 comes with a good quality pair of usb-c earphones to soften the blow. As MK Redding said, the jack has been removed by every single other major smartphone manufacturer apart from Samsung until now. So it’s not like they’re the first...there’s been plenty of time to switch to usb-c or Bluetooth for audio.

As for chargers a 45W charger in the box would have been great. But let’s not forget that there is a fast charger in the box (25W). You can’t compare Apple’s pitifully small 5W slow charger to Samsung’s 25W fast charger.

A 90hz display would have been nice to see (even if it was only on the Note 10+). So would have been a QHD display on the Note 10. But I don’t see any complaining about the 60hz, FHD OLED displays on the P30 Pro. So there is a degree of hypocrisy here.

If you’re going to criticise a brand for a decision you disagree with, be consistent. Because some (not all, before anyone is offended) of the complaining I see here strikes me as being unreasonably hopeful at best and hypocritical and ungrateful at worst.

To be fair, Motorola hasn't really existed for a few years, though Lenovo still uses the "Moto" brand. They have some great mid-range phones and do well there, but they do have issues trying to get their Moto Z to compete in the flagship market.

For $500 the Z4 has decent specs, packing a 6.4 inch FHD AMOLED display, aluminium build, fast charging and a 48MP camera with OIS. It’s 3600mAh battery and 25MP selfie camera and in-display fingerprint sensor also seem pretty good. However performance and extra bells/whistles is where it suffers. A snapdragon 675, 4GB of RAM and only a single rear camera in 2019 aren’t good enough. Even the Google Pixel 3 barely managed to survive 2018 in terms of specs, and it had a much better processor and rear camera.

In the UK choice of Motorola phones are much more limited than in the US. Motorola’s main threat/competitors in the mid-range/value-flagship range are Nokia and OnePlus. For an extra $79 in the USA you could get the OnePlus 6T instead which completely blows the Z4 out of the water when it comes to photography and performance. And for around $150-175 (I think) less you could get the Nokia 8.1 (online shipping) which has a similar metal/glass build, dual rear cameras with OIS, fast charging via usb-c and stock Android.

Quit Motorola when the quit making their phones here in Texas. EFFEM

..and Motorola includes a headphone jack in the Moto Z4...

At the end of the day, it's probably a cost decision. Not that a headphone jack itself costs a lot, but keep in mind that implementing a jack, making it waterproof, and having it take up space are all costs they have to contend with. Especially since USB C is quite capable of taking it's place. Yeah, it's a little inconvenient as we all have headphones that use the old 3.5mm Jack. But Samsung has held out pretty long. They are including USB C headphones and if you really must use your 3.5mm equipped headphones, dongles are pretty inexpensive. In the end, it's not that different than when they switched from micro USB to USB C.

I also wonder if they may be able to implement noise cancelling ear buds the way Sony used to. They had extra terminals in the 3.5mm connector that allowed mics in the ear buds to pick up the ambient sound. The phone would process the sounds and add the cancelling track to the audio. It required proprietary ear buds, but didn't require the buds to have a separate battery/processing box which cut down the clutter. It worked reasonably well.

I think that it would have been better to provide a dongle instead of headphones.

90% of all of these devices are the same, you are cherry picking the specs. The nite 10+ has things that make it different from the other phones on the market.... Look for the one that has the differences you want, and that's your device.

I like the camera set up, large screen and spen. For me that is enough to make me chose a note over anything else. Even though other phones are really close.... I found the things important to me and I chose my device

To bring this back to the audio jack... With a single, which is no different than just having a jack, you still have all the features you want from a 50 year old interface technology.

With the obvious exception of charging.

To be fair, Motorola still exists under Lenovo.

But if you really want to go there, it seems like most of the talent/technology stayed with Google as Google kept parts of the old Motorola Mobility like Project Ara and ATAP. In addition, there's old Motorola fingerprints all over the Pixel/Hardware division like Rick Osterloh. It's almost like Pixel is the new/better Moto X and the Pixel "a" line is the new/better Moto G.

Design-wise the Pixel phones are ahead of Motorola in my opinion (Google bought the entire HTC design team a while back for $1 billion). I’ve never like the circular dial-like protrusion housing the camera, clunky bezels which for some reason are always thicker on Motorola phones than they should be, and the Motorola name stamped on the front of the phone.

The dual-tone design is from HTC, and if you compare the Pixels with some HTC phones they look quite similar.

The last I heard, though I admit I haven't been following, Lenovo was going to kill the Motorola name, at least for the most part; they were just going to keep the Moto name for the phones.

I sometimes wonder if Google ever regretted selling off Motorola. I know it disappointed me, as I liked the phones Motorola made when they were part of Google. You have to think, had they kept Motorola, they wouldn't have needed to buy HTC's mobile division. And I have to agree with Golurk -- despite having some influence from the few Motorola employees they kept, the Pixels are influenced far more by their former HTC employees.

To those who don’t understand or disagree when I say that the Google Pixel phones were influenced by HTC’s design (because they shared the same design team):

Killing the Motorola name has been a rumor for the last three years. And here we are with new a Z and G Motorola phones.
