Most data you have used in a month?

Perhaps your dad would spring for it. Based on the new data rates that'd be... lessee...

---------
$30 - 2 GB
$50 - 5 GB
$80 - 10 GB

$20 per 1 GB overage
---------

About $420+/mo. for data Wanna ask your dad? :)

We are on course to use about 700 MB this month between the Thunderbolt (211 MB so far) and the iPhone 4 (130 MB so far). Yes, 700 MB for TWO phones.

I used to stream music a lot and even then I think I was well under 2 GB.

I don't know how you guys are hitting over 5 GB, much less 40...wow!

You are wrong. He would only cause lag to someone else if he was hosting a game which he never does. He always joins a game that someone else is hosting with a high speed connection. Works perfect for him with no lag. Verizon LTE is the only high speed service available in my area so telling my 13yr old son that he can't game online anymore would be like telling you that you cant eat or sleep anymore. LOL.

Please, don't act as if you're correct on this because you're not. If your connection is awful, the other players in the room will lag. Socom 4, for example, proves this by itself. Many people have been getting beaten because of lag. Once they started downloading a bunch of stuff, their internet connection began to lag and they started dominating the whole room non-stop.

Besides, why is it when I'm in a room with a person from Mexico, I lag and they don't? Same reason, my internet is better and that can be proven by using Google to see how bad an average Mexico connection truly is.

Again, your son should see no lag at all if he is running on a bad connection. The connection on XBOX Live and PSN both are ping based. And LTE does not have the proper (acceptable) ping to have an optimal gaming experience for the whole lobby. I got news for you, your son is skipping all around the screen while others are getting tired of dealing with it.

Also, please take note that even dedicated servers can't stop your connection from causing problems. It helps to remove a host, but it does NOT make up for that person with a bad ping. I'm no technical (IT) specialist, but I have friends that are and could back me up on this statement as that's where this information comes from. PING means just as much if not more than Upload and Download.

Ping is a computer network administration utility used to test the reachability of a host on an Internet Protocol (IP) network and to measure the round-trip time for messages sent from the originating host to a destination computer. The name comes from active sonar terminology. In various network multi-player games, the server notes the time it requires for a game packet to reach a client and a response to be received. This round-trip time is usually reported as the player's 'ping'. It is used as an effective measurement of the player's latency, with lower ping times being desirable. Note that this style of ping typically does not use ICMP packets. If that makes any sense to you, than you can now see why ping does matter.

I'm not trying to start an argument because it's not worth it and there is no reason. I've been using XBOX Live since the beta days (8 or 9 years) and the PSN for as long as the PS3 has been out. I've seen every variable possible and it all comes down to ping. Did you ever wonder why there is a ping meter on every match? Yes, those little Red/Yellow/Green bars. It's the ping, not upload and download. The game can have an optimal host but that does not mean the high ping isn't bringing the game down. There is a reason why you could be in a lag free game and all of a sudden someone joins and it begins to lag. Call of Duty included, it's lag.

Now, you can go let your son play as video games are fun. But I hope you understand this a bit more and those dang internet companies need to hurry and offer service in your area. LOL

My daughter uses about half a GB too and wish they had smaller plans with better prices for her line, now 40GB is a crap load but when there is a huge % of people that don't even use a GB in a month, same people everyone talks about not being rooted and such to enjoy the true Android experience. The average joe with a smartphone that uses hardly no data, a few data hogs shouldn't change anything? My opinion of coarse.

When Verizon offered the unlimited data plans, they did not expect users to use their phones to replace their internet service providor. In the same way that you or others here feel that Verizon takes advantage of its customers in other areas, this is an example of a customer taking advantage of the situation: pure and simple abuse. We can agree to disagree. I for one think it is abusive, and by the looks of it I am not alone. Just because you can does not mean you should!

Bull... They will hold me to the contract so I will do the same. They offered unlimited when they came out with 4g it was there just to get you swallow the bait now they are setting the hook.

I talked with a Verizon store owner who is a client of mine and sadly apple is controlling a lot of what Verizon is doing now including bullying them into tiered data plans. Sad that Verizon gave into them when they don't need them the way they would have years ago...

I agree that the ping times are much higher on the LTE network vs landline but guess what, my son consistently gets 3 green bars while playing call of duty on his PS3 and Xbox so if that really is a ping meter, then the game creators are saying 90-120ms ping is a good acceptable connection. He has quite a few friends that he plays with and no one has ever complained of him skipping around on the screen or causing them lag so the LTE network works better then you think for gaming.

Some of these figures are crazy large... I was actually surprise the other day by my data... I was testing it out to see how much I actually use after I've been hearing for some time that this tiered pricing was coming and want to see what I was using... I switched off my Wifi a couple months ago... so I've seen two months of strictly using data on LTE... I had one month with about 800MB... then one month with about 1.2G.

I don't stream anything... and I could use Wifi at home and at work... so I'm ok with the whole tiered billing.

I usually use 20-25GB a month on my phone and about 20GB or so on my hot spot each month. Mostly streaming music/videos.

I've never had Verizon say anything to me.....at least not yet.

My billing period ends in 4 days and I have only used 780MB (not even 1 GB) and I use my phone a lot, mostly for web searches, facebook, and a lot of email. If I want to watch a movie, I'd rather watch it on my 55" living room TV than my 4.3" phone. Although I am unhappy with unlimited going away, I am not concerned about my usage. I bet if I turned on WiFi at home, I would even be much less than 780MB. My wife has a blackberry and only used 65MB this month, so I have nothing to worry about. Those who have droids need to be watchful of their data usage, but those with blackberries I can't ever seeing exceeding 2GB.

I am so incredibly confused and totally get a good conversation about the changes is a much better choice then heated arguements. So my question is everyone posting claiming their device is a Thunderbolt why do you care? You have unlimited data do you not? Not like on July 7th Verizon is going to flip some huge switch ending all our contracts and allowing them to changes services going forward and forcing you to pay to stay or leave lol.

I can answer this for my own situation...

As soon as they "flip the switch", as you say, on July 7th, I'm going to sign up for the Mobile Hotspot. I need it for work.

Looks like I'll be paying $50/mo for a total of 4GB (combined, 2 from basic data plan and 2 more from Tethering plan - although they are put into a single bucket for billing). This will, I think, "change" my data plan and I will no longer have unlimited. Another way to look at it is that I'll get 4GB Total with Free tethering for $50/mo. Same thing. I like this concept, myself.

I don't think the reported data plan rates are too unfair like some. But... I do believe I will lose unlimited.

So have you called in and tried to sign up for it now and keep it going forward so your order shows a date before July 7th? Would be a shame if you screwed yourself over just by not making a simple phone call.

I'm guessing it'd be required since there's not simple mobile hotspot add-on anymore, you either switch to the bundled tiered data/hotspot or stay on unlimited and root.

Actually, over the last couple of months I've tried to sign up for it early a few times. They wouldn't let me. Now, since it looks like we'll be provisioning ourselves, upon demand, I still don't think they could do anything early.

I neither work for Verizon nor purport to have any inside information, but historically add ons like wireless hotspot have not affected any other part of your contract and simply been added to your bill. The adding of hotspot after 7/7 should not disqualify you from unlimited data. Only if you switch to feature phone and then try to switch back would you lose the free feature. Original Pre Plus owners still have unlimited hotspot feature, and original MIFI customers still have unlimited data. Some promotions are device specific, while others apply to an entire class of device. Unlimited data "appears" to apply to smartphone before the 7/7 deadline. Unless you discontinue service, you "should" be able to add hotspot without losing unlimited data. We won't truly know until 7/7, but that is the way Verizon, AT&T and Sprint have operated in the past. Past behavior being no guarantee of future actions.

uhm...AT&T does the same thing. You can keep unlimited data if you already have it but if you want tethering, you have to switch to their 2GB plan. It won't be as simple as just adding a feature anymore.

Again, not trying to argue this as were both mature enough to have a conversation about it. :)

90 - 120 ping (locally) is far too high for an optimal gaming session. I realize that your son is getting a 3 green bar ping, which is good, but in no way is 90 - 120 optimal. Anything below 50 is optimal and anything above is not. Those green bars your son has could mean he has a good connection to the host but still causes lag for others. I've seen that many times and there is no way around it other than getting a new internet connection. But as you stated, Verizon LTE is the only connection available so you're sort of stuck with it or forced to quit. And I understand that the idea of stopping your son from playing online isn't the best option so we'll leave it at that. I must say that I am surprised that no one has offered broadband service to your area yet. I know that not every area has broadband but it's surprising to see LTE beat out the others. LOL :)

As a side note, I'm not sure I trust those ping meters as much as myself when detecting lag. I've been in games where everyone had green and it was extremely laggy. But I've also been in games where it was all yellow (such as Crysis 2) and it didn't lag one bit. It really depends on the game though. For example, I always get green bars on Call of Duty along with everyone else. I'm running a 7 ping, 30 Download, 5 Upload. However, even though that connection should be green all of the time, Crysis 2 has me and everyone else listed as yellow all of the time (except the host). Both are P2P connections yet different readings. If only it were easier... LOL
