Moto X (1st gen): Lollipop Update News

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

Personally, it doesn't matter to me. I don't want a broken phone and mine is perfectly fine the way it is. If it lasts past my upgrade period, even better. I hope mine lasts until the next Moto X. I love skipping a generation.

I would rather Motorola break a promise than push broken software. I experienced that on my original Galaxy S and it SUCKED.

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

I'm basing it on past actions of Motorola where they did the same thing when recently issued phones were not updated. And on the fact that they are running promotion after promotion (currently throwing in a $200 paired of headphones, for example) so it's not like it would really cost them much if anything to sell the 2014 to 2013 owners for cheap.

The Moto X '13 is my first Motorola phone so I'm not familiar with the company's history in terms of failed deliveries of updates. I didn't realize Motorola had set a precedent for your prediction. Thanks for the info.

Out of curiosity, which orphaned phones did Motorola issue discounts on other models to appease users after failing to deliver an update?

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

Not a troll question, but is there anything on Lollipop that is a must-have? Sure, it's nice to say a phone has the latest iteration of the OS, but is the X-13 less of a phone because it is still is on Kit-Kat?

I'd like to be able to customize the "OK Google" phrase, but I'm not going to throw my phone on the corner because it's not available to me.

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

I'm coming from an Apple ecosystem so this upgrade thing seems pretty awful to me. I just expected that when Android was updated I'd get it on my phone. Had no idea about the staggered update cycle and some phones not getting it at all. Thus far though my Moto has been a great phone and has been fairly trouble free. Every bit as reliable as my iPhone and way more configurable. Lollipop would be nice to have and if Motorola doesn't deliver on it it's a shame for them. I'd think that a flagship company like Motorola could release at least one operating system update to it's phones before orphaning them.

This could spell trouble for them as the Chinese are already starting to make some inroads into the US market with high quality phones at bargain basement prices. They are also promising updates to Lolipop as well. I predict in 2 years the US market is going to be flooded with inexpensive Chinese phones and Motorola and others will be hard pressed to keep up.

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

I just got my 1st gen moto x today. I got rid of my galaxy s4 and this phone is so much better. Honestly I can wait for lollipop with how perfect this thing runs. No complaints at all.

I have been reading Cyanogenmod CM12 had been writing quite well on the 2013 X.

I may give that a try but I'm happy with 4.4.4 on my xt1053de. It's my daily driver. I may try it on my spare xt1506 once I get GSM unlocked on it. Try out on there first.

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

Like a few others, I'm not unhappy about the lack of an L update. KK has been smooth and great on the '13 X. But since Motorola did promise L for the '13 X, I do think that they'll come through in some way: whether that be an actual update or a rebate on a newer model.

Glad I'm not the only one that's not unhappy about the lack of a Lollipop update. Kitkat has been running much smoother on my Moto X than it ever did on my previous phone, Samsung Galaxy S3. I've had the Moto X for a little over a month and this phone is a regular speed demon compared to my S3. I've also noticed that the battery life on KitKat is better on the Moto X. Case in point: When I'd go to a high school basketball game, I had to make sure that I had at least one of my spare batteries charged up and with me when I had my S3. Even with that, it seemed like the S3 had a major drain on batteries. I'd go from 100% charge on on the first battery down to 50% charge in the course of an hour and I normally had to change batteries to make sure that I had a good charge on my phone. Second battery was just about the same as the first and I was using Samsung batteries both times. When I went to a basketball game last Friday, I didn't have to worry about having a spare battery because this doesn't have a removable battery. When I got to the game, it had over a 90% charge (not sure of the exact amount of charge). When I left the game about 2 hours later, the charge was at 69% when I out it on my charger at home. That's a big plus for me. I keep checking to see if Motorola has released the Lollipop update for this generation of Moto X because I want to be able to run it on this phone. I think that it will definitely be a good thing when it does come out but for right now, KitKat is just fine. Take your time Motorola and release this when you've got a good update to give us. Don't rush out something that's buggy and will make your customer base angry.

Re: when are we gonna get lolipop friends(Moto x 2013)

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

My big issue is the lack of updates to the Moto apps to bring us the features they released with the 2014 X. They told us the 2013 X would get updates to Active Display and other Moto apps to bring us functionality from the 2014 X (if the hardware supported it). At the LEAST, I want those updates, it can't be THAT hard to bring them to us since they had them working on KK on the 2014 X and the Turbo.

Just remember that it's kind of apples to oranges when every manufacturer putting out an Android device adds their own modifications (to put it lightly). In general, if you want timely updates ASAP, buy a Nexus device. It really is that simple.

As I get older, I fall more and more into the camp of no update is better than a bad one. My wife's iPhone 4s is the perfect example. It's new iPhone time tomorrow because her current one has been total crap since the last update. In no noticeable way did her update benefit her, unfortunately.

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

i'm getting a little tired of waiting... guess will wait until April, but if lollipop is not released i will sell my moto x 2013 and buy Lg g3 or iphone 6.

You realize that you won't be getting lollipop on the iPhone 6 either, right? :)

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

After what Lollipop has done to my Nexus 10, I don't want 5.02 anywhere near my fantastic Moto-X.

Re: The next announcement on Lollipop

I'm not really concerned if I get Lollipop on my Moto X (2013 ) or not it runs just fine on Kit Kat.I have Lollipop on my Moto X (2014) and have no issues with it.But I haven't actually been using the Moto X (2014) any this year, not because I don't like it its just the slightly smaller size of the 2013 fits in my hand better. :)

2013 Soak Test beginning soon

The email was sent out today. I have a 2014 now but it looks like there are releasing 5.1 to both devices in one big rollout.

Not what I wanted to hear about my OG X

From Luciano...

I copy/paste the first bit...

About today's Moto X news frenzy :-)

I will try to address the hundreds of questions I'm getting at once here:

1) is it true that the user test phase started for the original Moto X? Well, that was supposed to be a secret, but who am I kidding, this is the internet, and as per the screenshots and articles out already, you know it's true.

2) what Android version is it going to get? 5.0.2

3) what about 5.1? There are no plans for it yet. When any decision is made, I'll let you know.

There was more...but this disappoints me unless the OG X is somehow immune to the problems others have had with 5.02

I hear you and understand.
However.....The major memory leak was found and announced right before L5.02 was released. So Moto had time to look it over and ?maybe? just maybe fixed that in the code. We shall see.
I'm sure that would show up in the soak, if given a decent amount of time.
When OTA time comes lets hope we get a fully cooked Lollipop.
