Well the other woods are from FSC-certified, sustainable and managed forests, so at least they're not chopping down trees at random.

I went with ebony on my original Moto X (which is great btw), but I think I'm going Teak this time around. Just can't decide on the accent color.

FSC certainly tries hard... there are problems with their certifications sometimes, but it's definitely better than nothing, and I'm glad to see that Moto X is using those sources.

I wish I knew what kind of wood they're really using for the backs other than bamboo, but no matter how many creative ways I try to ask the question, the people at Motorola won't tell me. :-X

I had the bamboo on my first gen MotoX and loved it! Went with leather this time around to be different. I always love the leather backs since my Blackberry days.

People love the wood and leather backs because they're unique to the X. No other company is offering those materials (especially now that OnePlus has nicked the wood back for the One). Then again, people posting here are all fans, so your average Joe may not like either. I know my wife, when I showed her MotoMaker and the wood/leather backs, declared them "silly." She's an iPhone user though, so her opinion doesn't count.

Originally only got the phone but the EDU discount wouldn't apply so got a credit to buy the Hula case and screen protector. Yes, purple is my favorite color.

As much as I like trying out the leather on Moto Maker, and I like the thought of the tacky grip/premium feel, I probably won't actually buy it. Mine would be exposed to sweat while running & cycling with it...

Leather is just cow skin. They sweat also!

Am I the only one that thinks having the speaker grills be colored by the trim color is a bad idea? It makes the front look a little ridiculous.

Depends Its a 50/50 shot. Black/bright color...not really.

actually cows do not sweat. or at least they don't sweat like we do. the way you should look at it is a saddle. people ride on a saddle for hours and hours in the blistering hot sun. they way they solve the problem is by using a leather conditioner like neatsfoot oil. a leather cleaner is also important to use before applying the conditioner. some people say sadllesoap is great... others use science to show why it is not so great. pleanty of info around the web.

Marques deterred me from the leather. He said it doesn't seem to hold up well. Wood isn't appealing to me. $25 saved.

you know that is the only time that i can remember when i thought to myself, 'he does not know what he is talking about'. i have no doubt that moto put the leather backs through the wringer. they even said as much last year when they said there was more to come, but they had to go thorugh testing. i think the wear and tear he saw was due to people testing the limits as they were messing around with them. and i know in the end... moto will happily fix it if they need to.

I'm with you, I would like an orange back. When I first saw a promo pic with all of the backs arranged in a circle I thought the spice looked more like a pure orange color and was looking forward to trying it on Moto Maker.

I'd still consider the spice but I want to see it in person.

Bamboo is the only one that is the actual wood listed. The others are just stained to mimic another wood type.

so like a step up from ikea's paneled wood I guess? Not that that's a bad thing. Just trying to get an idea of what it feels like.

it feels like wood. they found a wood that was durable enough to hold up to the wear and tear, along with being capable of allowing signals to pass through. then they bleached the heck out of it and slapped on a simulated wood finish. after that they coated to protect from water.
