Moto X 2014 Peeling wood backs and my options now...

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

my wood back is also peeling very slightly bottom left corner (left side when looking at the back of the phone)
I have bamboo back with black front. I am probably going to switch it out for a regular plastic back...I want this phone to last a while I'm hoping my next phone will be one of the crazy google modular phones.

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

Leather just isn't me. I also wanted a phone with good resell value. Aka plastic ages better with wear and tear. However my phones never get dinged IP or scratched. Just my way I thinking. Plus I picked up a case for it. :-)

Peeling?
Wood doesn't peel. What are the wood finishes made out of?

It's not really peeling, that's just what people are calling it. It's actually the wood back lifting up slightly from the internal attachment point(s). "Detaching" is a more accurate term. They're actual wood and not a veneer (although only the bamboo is the same wood as the name, the others are stains), so peeling is a misnomer.

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

nobody mentioned here about the different points of thickness of the wood backs. on my bamboo there are edges where its slightly depressed in terms of where the metal edges are and some points where its "flush" with the metal edge. are people calling peeling the areas where the wood is raised higher than the metal edge or corners. i have that in one area but it is not actually peeling. its just raised. you cant get a finger nail under it.

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

In the case of mine, the "peeling" started in the lower left corner so the wood was not flush or slightly below the metal casing. Since I initially noticed it, it has expanded to the micro USB port on the bottom and up most of the left side of the phone so now the upper left corner is also not flush. I can press down on the wood and watch it slowly raise back up. I'm not sure how thick the back is but mine is raised about 1/2 mm, which I'd guess is about half the thickness of the back. I cannot put a finger nail under it as of yet, but I've seen pictures on XDA where you can. I called and got an exchange code, and ordered a leather back instead of wood. When I spoke to Moto, the CSR did ackowledge they've had issues with the wood doing this, and are actively trying to diagnose and rectify the issue. He was sure if it was an adhesive issue, design-issue which doesn't allow for enough adhesive, or some combination of the two.

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

The "peeling" or whatever you'd like to call it, on my bamboo back has definitely gotten worse. It is slowly creeping towards the usb port area. So I am probably going to get either a slate back or a smoke back, can't decide between the two. I have read the slate back isn't as dark as it appears in the pictures, but all the pictures I've seen are different (some look darker than others).

Alrdy called Motorola and waiting on my code to show up in my inbox.

It's a shame the wood backs are doing this, I don't trust that a replacement would not start peeling again, it's a hassle to replace my moto x since the moment I get a phone I stick a screen protector on it. Also I'd like this phone to last a while cause I'm trying to not buy any more phones till I can get my hands on one of those crazy modular phones google is working on.

I'm glad your getting a code! Plastic seems to the way to go unless you like leather. :)

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

how long did it take them to get a code to you? called in 5 hours ago and still no code in my inbox
Took about 4 weeks to get everything to work out. Check our spam box as well. Code seemed pretty instant for me. Give or take a few hours.

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

i had similar issues with the bamboo raising, and decided to get a new bamboo back. fingers crossed it comes back well. if it doesn't go well i might have to get plastic back.

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

cgardnervt, You described the slate back as being "soft touch." In my reading here and on Moto's site, everyone has said that the black back is the only true soft touch and the colors are hard plastic. If your new slate back is indeed soft touch, that's awesome and I'll be ordering that one. Can you provide some more info as to the texture of the slate back? Thanks.

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

Thanks for these reports guys. I was between the white/bamboo and the black soft touch, the only models (besides black leather) that are available here in my country. This really helped me out on deciding!

I got my smoke back in today (to replace my bamboo back) and then I went to the mall to get a ghost armor put on it. Figured...I'd check this out for you.

I walked into the att store and compared the texture of the black back on display to my smoke one

The black back is definitely "soft" touch, my brand new smoke back is slightly "soft" touch but not as much as the black back.
if the black one on display is a 10 in "softness" then the smoke back is a 5.

Honestly, if it were me...color is more important, why get a black phone just for it to be slightly "textier"

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

Does anyone know how long you have to return a phone that is defective in this way. There's a good chance my new bamboo back phone could start peeling within a year of use.

I can't get a fingernail under mine either but, if I press down on it, it will move and then pop back up when I let go.

Yup. I don't think its a severe issue until more edges start lifting up

Maybe it isn't a severe issue but when I pay $400 for a phone, it shouldn't happen at all. At least that's the way I see it.😃

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

Same thing is starting to happen at the bottom right of my back. Never noticed it until i took my case off for the first time. Going to keep a very close eye on it because i pnly have 6 more days until i can return it

Re: Peeling wood backs and my options now...

You have one year of manufacturer defects. So if it lifts and actually Peels like a banana you can return it.
