Hello everyone.
Just wondering if someone could answer my question. Is it possible to order a custom Moto X through the Verizon Edge plan? On the Verizon Wireless website I see that the regular model is $24.99 a month. But it doesn't mention anything about a custom model.

Yes it's possible. Go to a Verizon store tell them you want a 16 or 32gb moto x on edge. They get it all ready and will give you a pin code to go to moto maker.com. Customize it(leather/wood will be charged at checkout if you want it) enter pin and your done. 16gb is $24.99 and 32gb is $27.49 a month.

Don't rush right down to the store.

At 1400 today (08 Oct 2014) both the 16GB and the 32 GB models were listed as out of stock. No possible available date was available to the Verizon staff. At least I know this is correct because the second service rep showed me the screen.

FYI there is also an issue with the Verizon computers. A recent update disabled the ability for service reps to enter orders on their tablets - must use one of the few PC is the store.

Verizon Edge has been well documented to be a complete rip-off. Don't do it. You're basically paying for the device twice through that program. And you don't get to keep it when you move to another device.

Sure, leasing devices isn't usually the way to go, but I'm not sure it's a rip off if you upgrade your devices often, especially if your on a 10GB data plan where you get a $25 credit for each line on the plan on Edge. I consider it a service charge for convenience.

I'm not sure which customization your looking for, but if it's the bamboo back, you can get it at the store.

*You're.

And, yes, you're definitely paying quite a fee for convenience. Verizon Edge

Bespinct is right in that the $25 discount per line (on 10gb or higher share plans) is NOT taken into account in that article. That pretty much negates the built-in subsidized cost that they estimate.

That said, Verizon still offers less value than they did a few years ago. Their share plans are a rip off for a couple that has 2 phones and a grandfathered unlimited plan. I will say things start looking more comparable when you add a 3rd or 4th family member, which we may be doing soon.

Also it stinks that you have to sign up at least one phone for edge in the 10gb and up plan to get the discount, so you wouldn't be able to BYOD for all devices in your plan and get the $25 discount per line. Verizon also doesn't just offer the discount to anyone that no longer owes on a phone or contract. At least AT&T offers some type of discount when contracts expire or to anyone that has a paid-off phone.

So they want to profit off of the full retail value of the phone as the only way to remove the subsidy. Freeing them from from the cost of the phone isn't good enough for them.

Using the EDGE plan is much easier ordering a pin for MotoMaker through the Verizon Store.

As others have said, EDGE is probably not selected for financial reasons. There are a lot of calculation required but the end result is that you usually pay more for the a little more freedom to change phones. Verizon is in business to make a profit - bigger the better. Sure you get a discount on the line fee but pay more for the phone (which is lease not purchase unless you plan to use it for ever). And there is a fair change you will be 'sucked' into a bigger data plan than you need at $10 per GB. Otherwise the discount is only $10/line. Even with 4 users that is 2.5GB/line on average. Probably most of the readers are heavy data users but research shows that most smartphone owners have too big of data plans. We are comfortably under our shared limit. But Verizon would love to sell me more.

It's a ripoff even for those who have a grandfathered 2gb/mth (or my 4gb "double data" deal) for $30 plan. It's even worse if you have a dumb phone on the account, which under the old share plan cost just $9.99/mth. And I've been out of contract for a number of months now (wife still in contract) and it burns me to still be paying the subsidy data price.

Not true at all. With my 10GB plan, I get a $25 per month discount so access cost is only $15/month. If you complete the 20 months, it's your phone and don't have to return if edging up.

Big Red must have started that credit after the tech media pointed out their effective double-charging for the device. I'm shocked they actually did that.

They just started offering it along with the the extra GB promotion on the larger than 10GB plans as a response to all of AT&T recent offers.

We may add my daughter this month and the 15GB share plan is actually looking competitive with our current alternatives w/Verizon only because of the $15 vs $40 access fees.

Started in April along with the same $25/$15 discounts for BYOD and month-to-month on More Everything.

Thanks. Didn't realize they first offered it in April.

Their website seems to imply that at least one phone needs to be on the Edge plan to get those discounts. I see what the reps say about that this weekend

Just to caution, Verizon just upped the payoff percentage required to edge up to 75% from 60%. Do the math on edge vs 2 year contract to see if it's still a benefit for you.

As a long time Verizon customer I agree totally with ^^^^^

There is no reason to pay more on the Edge program and never get to keep your phone. The smart alternative is to buy your phone outright (no contract) then sell it whenever you want to upgrade.

Folks who always need the latest and greatest will benefit the MOST from doing this bc they will be getting the best payback for their top-end phone every time they decide to upgrade and sell. This is why sites like eBay, Gazelle, Swappa, Craigslist, and so many others are becoming popular for resale of phones because they help maximize your return on investment when you sell...without being on contract.

You get zero return on investment with the Edge program (and others like it). Why do you think Verizon promotes and pushes it so forcefully? They get rich(er) at our foolish expense.

With the $25 discount for Edge since I have a 10GB plan, I'm effectively renting the phone for $2 a month & I'll upgrade again in a year. Even If I bought outright, I'd never get back (retail - $24) So it would be more expensive for me to buy and sell vs Edge.

For any still interested, I can confirm I was able to do this over the phone as well. They had the 16Gb for 499.99 and 32gb for 549.99. If you want a custom leather/wood back you have to pay extra on the motorola site ($25).

The only issue I had was that they did not email me the PIN for the motomaker site right away, I had to call Verizon back the next morning. They gave me the PIN over the phone. Two minutes later after I complete checkout on motorolas site, I get an email from motorola with the PIN :(
