My Nexus 4 Video Capture option is HORRIBLE! Help!

First off, I'm with T-Mobile so I'm guessing that is possibly the reason why I can only send videos using the "video capture" option in whoever I'm trying to send video to. When I record any "normal" video and try to send it, it says "Message Size Limit Reached". Secondly, whenever I do try and capture video through text option...the quality is HORRIBLE.
and yes, it is on 1080p etc.

Any ideas on why?

Thanks!

Well, what are you using to do the capture? You need to tell us the software you're using before we'll be able to provide much help.

It's just how mms works. There is a size cap of the file you can send. So if you try to attach a video and the file is too large then you will get an error, sometimes the file will be small enough it can be compressed and the quality will drop immensely. Also the reason your quality is so poor when using the messaging record function is because it essentially downgrades the video quality to be able to send the video. The best way to share videos with friends and have then be of a better quality would be to upload the video to YouTube (setting the video to private if that's what needs to be done), and sending them the link. It's simply the way all phone systems work and has been brought up many other times.

Alternatively I believe you could also email the person the video, that would at least increase your size cap of the video file.

Such a short coming of Android.
I've been reading about this "can't send video text" and this is but one many forms, boards, discussions about the issue I've seen.
Some say it's the camera, or the file size or mp4 over what ever the other one is, others say it's carriers or mms it's self in desperate need of upgrades...

What ever it is, It's forcing me back to iPhone, even on my 2010 iPhone 4, i could send and receive 1080p, a minutes worth, with out a problem!

Maybe I should sell the S3.

i hope this post isn't edited as well....
I can see your recommendations for how to send a HD text. They're creative ways around the issue, So, here's a question.

Why can't an android send an HD text?

Try to answer without comparing to any other phone.

There are three limitations and MMS default size to the lowest one. The carrier, device and app all have a size limit on each file type and anything above that limit is not sent at all, although in some cases certain apps will attempt to compress a MMS to make it fit and send it that way.

For example, on the HTC One Developer edition, the limitation of the device is less than the 64GB HTC One on AT&T. Both can be used on AT&T, but one can send slightly larger messages.

On Android it's assumed that any of the dozens of methods to share a large file should be sufficient, such as Hangouts, G+, etc, etc. There is a specific reason that iMessage is able to circumvent the limitations, and the same type of methodology can be used on Android (Hangouts, texting a link, etc), it's just not integrated with the text messing app (as of yet).

The only difference that would not allow it to go thru vs any other phone would be the file size, so the amount of file compression comes into play. As has been stated numerous times, the carriers impose a size limitation, typically 600kb. If the file doesn't get compressed enough, it won't go thru. Higher resolution videos are going to be larger in size and there is only a certain amount of compression that will work. My wife was complaining the other day that her HTC One X wouldn't send video. She had been recording at the highest video quality. I showed her how to change the video setting to MMS resolution and told her to keep the videos short, no complaints since. If you want to share a higher and/or longer video, use the above mentioned methods. As the cameras on these phones get to be better and better quality, sending video thru MMS will become obsolete and the above methods will become the standard. Since the carriers typically don't charge for the data used thru MMS, them raising the limits is highly unlikely.

Well thanks. :), I can't say I'm happy with the result of the answers, but I am most thankful for the explanations.

iPhone most certainly has it figured out by having that feature integrated into how imesseges work and all.

Thanks again.

iMessages is not an SMS client. It is an instant messaging app with SMS integration. Video is sent thru the data side service, which is not the same as sending as MMS. You will most likely see the same with Android soon thru Hangouts. I have read some articles that state Google is working on the same type SMS/MMS integration with Hangouts.

The stock camera app on the N4 has video settings for 1080p, 720p, and 480p. Where is the setting to "change the video setting to MMS resolution"?

Right now I use the Capture Video option in the MMS app. I might be wrong, but those videos don't seem to be saved onto the device, just send as MMS.

When I was using the Sidekick 4G (android), the camera app had a recording mode setting entitled "Limit for MMS". Those video got saved to the gallery just like full res videos. I could take a video that I knew I wanted to send via MMS without knowing who I wanted to initially send it to.

Do N4 mms videos get saved anywhere?

Here's the thing though, and I mean this with all due respect to the OP: *have* you actually ever sent HD video over actual MMS?

Remember to ALWAYS dig deeper into how things really work, because otherwise you're just setting yourself up for defeat or, worse, to be led around by the nose by someone else instead of being able to provide for yourself.

iMessage, as has been pointed out above, is actually an IM app, not an SMS/MMS app. It can SMS (perhaps also MMS?) but this is only used as a fallback. Otherwise, using iMessage, it will ALWAYS try to send it as an IM.

Incidentally, you should really take a look at MessageMe for Android. If there was ever a community-generated app that Google should consider including in baseline Android, that would be a darned good candidate. It's solid, works well, lets you do all kinds of things that iMessage does, it's free, and all that's required is the other person have it as well. I use it almost exclusively, and frankly the only time I fall back on the regular Messaging app is for those people who don't have MessageMe or my friends with MessageMe who use CDMA carriers and therefore cannot use cellular data and talk at the same time. Me being a GSM user, that isn't a problem.

I assume Google kept it integrated with the messaging app since typically one will not record at 320x240 unless they plan to use it as MMS. It being integrated with the messaging app also allowed them to put a time limit on the video record, which keeps the video size down to where there should be no problem sending it as MMS. After sending the recorded video, if you want to keep a copy, long pressing the video and choosing the save attachment option will save it to the "Download" folder.

This method also saves the video as 3GP, vs MP4, meaning just about any phone you send it to will be able to open it.
